<li>In a prior article, we shared with you details of China's stimulus program. Prior to last Tuesday, Chinese stocks had been beaten down and had been trading at low valuations.</li>

<li>When the rally first started, the concern was that this rally would also fail like prior rallies. Initially, it was simply prudent to consider the rally in Chinese stocks last week to be suspect.  The chart shows that even the COVID opening rally failed, and the subsequent AI rally also failed.</li>
<li>The chart shows that the rally is on high volume. This indicates conviction and provides confirmation for the rally.</li>
<li>RSI on the chart shows that the Chinese stock market is very overbought. Overbought markets tend to pullback in the short term.</li>
<li>In Shanghai, the CSI 300 jumped 8.5%. This is the biggest single day gain since 2008.</li>
<li>The five day gain in Shanghai is the strongest since 1996.</li>
<li>The chart shows that this rally has decisively broken the downtrend like a rocketship.</li>
<li>From a technical perspective, such strong rallies tend to take stocks higher after a brief pullback.</li>
<li>The rally is partly driven by fear of missing out (FOMO) among foreign investors who are rushing into China.</li>
<li>Money is flowing out of safer Chinese 30 year Treasury bonds and into Chinese stocks. Chinese 30 Treasury bond futures fell to a two month low after losing 3.6% last week.  This is the worst quick loss ever.</li>
<li>For the day, the economic data from China is poor. China's PMIs are weak. Here are the details:
<ul>
<li>Manufacturing PMI came at 49.8 vs. 49.4 consensus.</li>
<li>Non-manufacturing PMI came at 50.0 vs. 50.4 consensus.</li>
<li>A number less than 50 is considered economic contraction.</li>
<li>Expectations are that China's PMIs will spike up in the coming months due to government stimulus.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li>Negative sentiment from Europe is carrying to the U.S.</li>

It is worth reminding that you cannot take advantage of new upcoming opportunities if you are not holding enough cash.&nbsp; When adjusting hedge levels, consider adjusting partial stop quantities for stock positions (non ETF); consider using wider stops on remaining quantities and also allowing more room for high beta stocks.&nbsp; High beta stocks are the ones that move more than the market.

Probability based risk reward adjusted for inflation does not favor long duration strategic bond allocation at this time.
Those who want to stick to traditional 60% allocation to stocks and 40% to bonds may consider focusing on only high quality bonds and bonds of five year duration or less.&nbsp; Those willing to bring sophistication to their investing may consider using bond ETFs as tactical positions and not strategic positions at this time.

What Happened: The &#8220;Ford Power Promise&#8221; program, starting Tuesday, offers benefits like free home-charging installation for buyers or lessees of new Ford EVs, including the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E. The initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens and educate new EV owners, CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/30/ford-ev-benefits-program-aims-to-boost-sales.html">reported</a> on Monday.
Marin Gjaja, COO of Ford&#8217;s Model e EV business, stated, &#8220;Filling up at home is really key, but so is confidence in the durability and life of the battery.&#8221; 
The program addresses &#8220;change anxiety,&#8221; a term Ford uses to describe the fear of transitioning from gas to electric vehicles.
Benefits include installation of a $1,310 level-two home charger, 24-hour advisor service, and roadside assistance for five years or 60,000 miles. Customers can opt for a $2,000 cash equivalent if they don&#8217;t need a home charger. The program&#8217;s free charger installation is initially available for the fourth quarter, with potential extensions.

Why It Matters: Ford&#8217;s latest initiative comes on the heels of a significant <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40745466/fords-august-ev-sales-surge-29-driven-by-cybertruck-rival-f-150-lightning-despite-its-slowing-future">surge in its EV sales</a>. In August, Ford reported a 29% increase in electric vehicle sales, driven largely by the F-150 Lightning, which saw a 161% jump in sales.

Ford Launches New Benefits Program To Address 'Change Anxiety' Amid Slowdown In EV Sales

Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>) stock is plunging Monday after it revised its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/09/g41084649/stellantis-updates-2024-financial-guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal 2024 guidance</a> to reflect its remediation actions on North American performance issues and deterioration in global industry dynamics. Auto rivals, including&nbsp;General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and&nbsp;Ford Motor Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), are trading lower in sympathy with Stellantis.
The company projects a fiscal 2024 adjusted operating margin of 5.5%—7.0%, down from its prior <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/07/39959183/stellantis-ceo-earnings-fell-short-of-expectations-expect-20-new-vehicles-this-year" rel="noreferrer noopener">double-digit growth expectations</a>.
It now expects fiscal 2024 industrial free cash flow of negative 5 billion euros—negative 10 billion euros versus the prior positive cash flow expectations.
The automotive company targets 330,000 units of dealer inventory by year-end 2024 in the U.S., from a prior timing objective of the first quarter of 2025.
The company&#8217;s remediation actions include North American shipment declines of more than 200,000 vehicles in the second half of 2024 (up from 100,000 prior guidance) compared to the previous year period, increased incentives on 2024 and older model-year vehicles, and productivity improvement initiatives.
In July, Stellantis NV reported a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/07/39959183/stellantis-ceo-earnings-fell-short-of-expectations-expect-20-new-vehicles-this-year" rel="noreferrer noopener">14% topline decline</a>, reaching revenue of 85 billion euros ($91.53 billion) in the first half of 2024. Combined shipments declined by 12%, and the net profit plunged by 48%.
On a positive note, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/09/41004045/whats-going-on-with-chinese-stocks-alibaba-nio-xpeng-li-auto-on-tuesday" rel="noreferrer noopener">the U.S. Fed cut</a> the lending rate by 50 bps, lowering the central bank&#8217;s benchmark rate to 4.75%-5% to spur demand. Analysts expect the cut to drive growth in discretionary spending.
Stellantis stock is down over 30% year-to-date.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) CEO Jim Farley drove through Europe in an electric vehicle in August and came back with several realizations including the need for a better charging infrastructure if <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41060572/ev-sales-expected-to-gain-momentum-in-us-in-q3-even-as-market-leader-tesla-is-projected-to-decline-r">EV adoption is to pick up pace in the U.S.</a>
What Happened: Farley drove from Germany to Italy to meet with Ford Pro employees, dealers, customers, and upfitters in a new electric <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40525705/fords-e-transit-van-could-be-its-golden-goose-until-new-evs-start-rolling-out-in-2026">Ford E-Transit Custom </a>and its plug-in hybrid variant in August, the CEO said in a note on Linkedin.
During the journey, the CEO experienced little issues with charging unlike during his journey on an EV across California last year, he said. 
&#8220;One of the key reasons electric vehicle adoption has stalled in the U.S. is a lack of charging, especially for long distance drives. There's still more work to be done in Europe and bolder investment needed by policymakers to get to mass coverage, but I was excited by the existing charging options I saw and how reliable access lowers range anxiety,&#8221; the CEO said.
Farley also said that he realized customers want a range of powertrain solutions depending on their use of the vehicle. While some will stick to diesel and hybrids for the foreseeable future, some businesses are going electric to lower costs, he said. 
The Ford CEO reiterated the company&#8217;s commitment to decarbonization in his note but added that hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and partially electric vehicles will &#8220;coexist with electric vehicles longer than anyone previously thought.&#8221;
Ford Pulls Back On EVs: Ford is now postponing previously stated EV timelines and has even dropped new products. Last month, Ford said that it is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/08/40496864/ford-scraps-electric-suv-as-it-adjusts-to-lower-electric-vehicle-demand" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">killing its plans to build a three-row electric SUV</a>, initially slated for production in 2025. The company also postponed its plans for a new electric version of its F-150 pickup to 2027 and said it will start making a new electric commercial van in 2026.
More details on the company's EV strategy are now expected in the first half of 2025.
EV Financials: Ford&#8217;s EV segment recorded an earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) loss of $1.14 billion <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/07/39943178/ford-q2-earnings-highlights-revenue-beat-eps-miss-transit-vans-hit-record-ev-sales-fall-37" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in the second quarter</a> owing to industry-wide pricing pressure and lower wholesales despite significant cost reductions in the segment.
For the whole year, Ford expects to incur a loss of $5 billion to $5.5 billion within the EV segment, called Model E.

It&rsquo;s been almost two years that China&rsquo;s biggest EV maker and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) rival, BYD (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/byddy#OTC">BYDDY</a>) entered the EU and the UK. While BYD marches on, traditional automakers like Ford Motor (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/f#NYSE">F</a>), General Motors (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gm#NYSE">GM</a>) and Volkswagen are struggling to adapt to the new EV era.
<h3>Ford Is Struggling To Make Its EV Business Work</h3>
With its EV business continuing to lose money, Ford is trying to turn things around. Even electrifying its best-selling F-150s, America&rsquo;s best-selling vehicle of 42 years, didn&rsquo;t solve EV issues for Ford. Despite its luster, the electric version of F-150, the Lightning, was not a game changer for Ford. Moreover, Electrek reported that GM is narrowing the gap. With GM expanding its lineup across key EV segments, covering both low-cost and luxury ends, GM has the momentum on its side and could surpass Ford this year, especially considering the setbacks Ford has faced, including canceling its three-row electric SUV.
But Ford is not alone in its struggles, with all legacy automakers both in the U.S. and in Europe facing increased competitive pressure from China, while they deal with high inventories, falling prices, and weakening consumer demand. Europe&rsquo;s largest automaker, Volkswagen (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vwagy#OTC">VWAGY</a>) has not only lost its strength in China to BYD, but it is also struggling on the home front.&nbsp;
<h3>Tensions At Volkswagen Are Running High&nbsp;</h3>
On Wednesday, union leaders in Germany have threatened with strikes as they warned Volkswagen&nbsp;of making a &lsquo;historic mistake&rsquo; if management decides to pursue layoffs and plant closures. Volkswagen literally shocked both its employees and the world by announcing earlier this month it is considering to close plants in its home country, for the first time in the automaker&rsquo;s 87-year-old history. AFP reported that Volkswagen has disappointed its workers by being too vague and failing to concretize its turnaround plan. Earlier this year, Volkswagen entered into an agreement with XPeng (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/xpeng#NYSE">XPENG</a>) to improve its odds in China, but XPeng is also eyeing Europe, and therefore also threatening Volkswagen on its home continent. XPeng just showcased its latest technology in Stockholm. Also, XPeng used the opportunity to reaffirm its European expansion plans, with Spain, Portugal and the UK being on the itinerary for the second half of the year. Moreover, XPEng is also considering an EV manufacturing base in Europe. Therefore, while joining forces with XPeng to tackle the Chinese market was a sensible move, this did not shield Volkswagen against a rising rival that already entered its home market back in March.&nbsp;
<h3>Chinese EV Makers Are Steaming Ahead</h3>
Despite the global EV slowdown, Chinese EV makers are not pushing the brakes.&nbsp;
China is determined to win the race to EV dominance. By the looks of it, it is leading the way. Consequently, the automotive landscape is undoubtedly evolving in the EV era that is in the making. Unfortunately, the changing face of the automotive industry does not look too good for legacy automakers that lack a systematic response to China&rsquo;s EV offensive.&nbsp;

What Happened: Bitcoin steadily retreated during U.S. trading hours, falling as low as $62,770, a day after sailing to more than one-month highs.
Whales <a href="https://x.com/ali_charts/status/1838891579450273986">offloaded </a>billions of Bitcoins in the past 24 hours, locking in profits from the previous day&#8217;s highs.
A similar downtrend was observed for Ethereum which fell below $2,600 in midday trading, only to consolidate in the higher $2,500 region for the rest of the day.
Total cryptocurrency liquidations amounted to $93 million in the last 24 hours, with bullish-leveraged traders bearing the brunt of the losses.
Bitcoin's Open Interest slumped more than 3%, further indicating long liquidations.
The market sentiment continued to be "Neutral," according to the popular Cryptocurrency Fear &amp; Greed Index.

The global cryptocurrency market stood at $2.21 trillion, shrinking 2.01% in the last 24 hours.
Stocks pulled back Wednesday after notching two straight days of record closing. The Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated 293.47 points, or 0.70%, to close at 41,914.75. The broad-based index S&amp;P 500 slid 0.19% to end at 5,722.26. Both the blue-chip indexes closed at record highs. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite defied the retreat to close marginally higher at 18,082.21.
Auto stocks contributed to the fall after analysts at Morgan Stanley <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/41029378/analyst-ditches-automakers-for-auto-dealers-parts-companies">downgraded stocks</a> of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) and General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>). with both retreating 4.14% and 4.89%, respectively.
Investors also<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/real-estate/reit/24/09/41036750/new-us-single-family-home-sales-fall-from-prior-month-but-are-up-from-a-year-ago-as-mortgage-rat"> parsed new single-family home sales data</a> that fell 4.7% in August from the prior month.

Analyst Notes: Noted cryptocurrency analyst Ali Martinez highlighted the significance of $63,300 as Bitcoin's support level.&nbsp;
"If it holds, BTC can rise to $65,500, but if it doesn&#8217;t, BTC will likely dive to $60,365!" the researcher remarked.
With the top cryptocurrency sliding below the indicated level, it remains to be seen whether Martinez&#8217;s prediction turns out to be correct.

Widely-followed cryptocurrency trader, going by the pseudonym Coach K Crypto drew attention to Bitcoin clocking 88% gains on average in the fourth quarter.
"If we hit that average, we&#8217;re looking at $120,000. Now, imagine what that would do for altcoins," the trader said.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin Pull Back As Auto Stocks Trigger Equities Decline: Analyst Forecasts King Crypto's Fall To $60.36K Because Of This Reason

Analysts at Morgan Stanley sparked a shakeup across auto stocks Wednesday as the firm moved to the sidelines on automakers and turned more positive on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-auto-parts-stocks">dealers and parts companies</a>.
What Happened: Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas downgraded Ford Motor Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Rivian Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) on Wednesday as he cut his overall U.S. auto industry outlook from Attractive to In Line.
Jonas&#8217; more sour view of the auto industry landscape is being driven by a combination of factors he believes may not be fully understood by the market, including climbing inventories, vehicle affordability challenges, rising credit losses and delinquencies and growth slowdowns in China.
&#8220;In addition, our previous attractive industry view was supported by our expectation of significant strategic changes such as lower capex and potential consolidation (M&amp;A/partnership) to improve capital efficiency. While there has been some modicum of progress, it has failed to meet our expectations,&#8221; the Morgan Stanley analyst said in a new note to clients.
Jonas also noted Morgan Stanley had been optimistic about automakers getting a boost for being AI enablers, but that concerns about the significant capital requirements for AI development now counter thesis.
Finally, investors are looking for an opportunity in the market driven by the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/09/41008403/consumer-confidence-tumbles-as-concerns-over-labor-market-grow-odds-rise-for-50-b">Federal Reserve&#8217;s rate-cutting cycle</a>, but although rate cuts can provide &#8220;temporary&#8221; relief for automakers, cuts are not likely to drive material outperformance, Jonas said.
The Morgan Stanley analyst highlighted data showing that although U.S. auto stocks have modestly outperformed on average in the six months following a rate cut, they have historically underperformed over the subsequent six-month period.

Ford Downgrade: Morgan Stanley downgraded Ford from Overweight to Equal-Weight and lowered the price target from $16 to $12.
Jonas expects Ford to suffer greater market share losses through the end of the decade. The analyst also anticipates pricing headwinds and regulatory compliance risk, which could hurt profitability. Jonas lowered his normalized earnings expectations by 15.1%. 
Morgan Stanley has a bull case price target of $19 on Ford stock and a bear case price target of $6.
GM Downgrade: Morgan Stanley downgraded GM from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings">Equal-Weight to Underweight</a> and lowered the price target from&nbsp;$47&nbsp;to&nbsp;$42.
Jonas sees a lot of the same headwinds in front of GM. He specifically pointed to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40981404/us-proposes-ban-on-vehicles-equipped-with-chinese-software-as-team-biden-cracks-down-on-foreign-adve">China concerns</a> as one of the main drivers of the downgrade. GM has significant exposure to the Chinese automakers through its joint ventures, the analyst said.
&#8220;In addition, we believe investors may not appreciate the potentially adverse impact that excess capacity in China has on other highly profitable regions in the global auto market,&#8221; Jonas said.
Morgan Stanley lowered its normalized earnings estimates for GM by 16.4% but left its bull case price target of $62 and bear case price target of $28 unchanged.
Rivian Downgrade: Morgan Stanley downgraded Rivian from Overweight to Equal-Weight and lowered the price target from $16 to $13.
&#8220;The downgrade reflects our incorporation of the capital intensity of AV/ADAS which may be required to fulfill the technological underpinnings that attracted Volkswagen as a JV partner,&#8221; Jonas said. 
The Morgan Stanley analyst increased his annual capex estimates by $200 to $300 million per year beginning in 2026 as he waits for management to announce details around its joint venture cost structure. 
Morgan Stanley&#8217;s new price target of $13 consists of $10 per share in value for the automotive business and $3 per share in value for Rivian&#8217;s software and services business. The firm has a bull case price target of $29 and a bear case target of $6.

Why It Matters: On the flip side, Morgan Stanley upgraded franchise dealers as the firm believes we are in the later innings of mean reversion in the franchise dealer model relative to legacy automakers who are just now going through peak earnings and are battling increased headwinds. 
&#8220;We believe that our latent concerns about the franchise dealer business model (secular DTC bear case, mean reversion thesis) have proven largely mitigated and see greater risk in other pockets of our U.S. autos coverage,&#8221; Jonas said.
Franchise dealers have proven to be pretty resilient by managing costs and focusing more on parts and services profits. Given the slower-than-expected <a href="http://benzinga.com/topic/evs">EV</a> adoption pace, these companies stand to benefit from a longer internal combustion engine parts tail and strength in hybrids, the analyst said.
Furthermore, many of the franchise dealers are more geared toward the higher-end consumer, which helps insulate the companies from a broader deterioration in auto credit relative to other areas of Morgan Stanley&#8217;s coverage.
