Foot Locker

Foot Locker Inc operates footwear and apparel retailer in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, and has licensed store presence in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The company mainly sells athletically inspired shoes and apparel. Foot Locker's merchandise comes from only a few suppliers, with Nike providing the majority. Its portfolio of brands includes Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports, WSS, and atmos. The company has omnichannel capabilities to bridge the digital world and physical stores, including order-in-store, buy online and pickup-in-store, and buy online and ship-from-store, as well as e-commerce. It has three operating segments, North America, EMEA, and Asia Pacific.

Shares of retail, apparel, and ecommerce stocks are trading lower amid recession worries due to uncertainty regarding tariffs and trade policy. Additionally, consumer spending is expected to be impacted, which is weighing on the industry.

Shares of Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FL#NYSE">FL</a>) were heading south in early trading on Thursday, after the company reported <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44138694/foot-locker-posts-q4-eps-beat-helped-by-comparable-sales-growth-and-margin-expansion">downbeat fourth-quarter sales</a>.
The results came in amid an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">exciting earnings season</a>. Here are some key analyst takeaways.
Telsey Advisory Group On Foot Locker
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5f9ab74825a7ef0001015b59/cristina-fernandez">Analyst Cristina Fernández</a> maintained a Market Perform rating, while reducing the price target from $24 to $20.
While Foot Locker reported healthy fourth-quarter results, its 2025 guidance felt short of expectations "due to lower total sales and operating margin," Fernández said in a note. Over the past couple of years, the company has raised the sales penetration of non-Nike Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>) brands to around 40%, she added.
"Foot Locker plans $300MM in capex in 2025, including higher spending in store remodels, while some technology projects have been delayed," the analyst wrote. While modernizing stores is the right way to go, the company's progress toward the 2028 operating margin target of 8.5%-9.0% "keeps getting pushed out," she further stated.

Needham On Foot Locker
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5846ee56ee7bf6000154d12e/tom-nikic">Analyst Tom Nikic</a> reaffirmed a Buy rating and price target of $24.
Foot Locker reported fourth-quarter comparable sales growth of 2.6%, in-line with the guidance range, while earnings of 86 cents per share came in above the guidance, Nikic said. "FL saw strength across a wide range of brands in Q4," he added.
Management guided earnings of 1.35-$1.65 per share for fiscal 2025, slightly below the consensus of $1.72 per share, the analyst stated. "Although sales in December/January were strong (both +MSD), management noted that QTD trends have been softer, with increasing macroeconomic uncertainty weighing on consumers&#8217; shopping patterns," he further wrote.
FL Price Action: Shares of Foot Locker were down 3.18% to $17.68 at the time of publication on Thursday.

Traders awaited further <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44143647/trump-considering-tariff-relief-for-mexico-canada-commerce-secretary-lutnick-says">developments on trade policy</a> after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared on Bloomberg Television on Wednesday. Lutnick said President Donald Trump would likely make a decision on possible tariff relief for Mexico and Canada Wednesday afternoon.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note was at 4.23% on Wednesday, trimming declines from the morning after expansion in the services sector, reflected by the ISM PMI easing concerns on lower growth. However, yields remained near four-month lows touched earlier in the week.  The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) fell 0.24%.

Specialty athletic retailer&nbsp;Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FL#NYSE">FL</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading lower in premarket</a> on Wednesday.
The company reported a fourth-quarter sales decline of 5.8% year-on-year to $2.243 billion, missing the analyst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/n44137285/foot-locker-inc-reports-fourth-quarter-2024-financial-results-issues-2025-outlook" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of $2.322 billion.</a>
Comparable store sales increased 2.6% versus last year. Adjusted EPS of $0.86 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">beat the analyst consensus of $0.72.</a>
The gross margin expanded 300 basis points, led by sequentially improved merchandise margin recapture trends relative to the third quarter of FY24 despite elevated promotions in the marketplace.
Selling, general and administrative expenses fell 6% Y/Y to $501 million. The operating margin was 3.6%, and operating income for the quarter jumped 148% to $82 million.

The company held $401 million in cash and equivalents as of February 1. Merchandise inventories were $1.5 billion, a 1.1% Y/Y increase.
The operating cash flow for twelve months totaled $345 million. As of&nbsp;February 1, the company operated 2,410 stores in 26 countries in&nbsp;North America,&nbsp;Europe,&nbsp;Asia,&nbsp;Australia, and&nbsp;New Zealand.
&#8220;Our return to positive comparable sales growth, gross margin expansion, and positive free cash flow in fiscal 2024 serve as proof points that our Lace Up Plan is working,&#8221; said CEO Mary Dillon.
FY25 Outlook: Foot Locker sees FY25 comparable sales growth of 1% &#8211; 2.5%. FL expects sales change of -1.0% to +0.5%. Store count to be down 4%.
The company expects adjusted FY25 EPS of $1.35 &#8211; $1.65 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">versus the consensus of $1.77.</a>

U.S. stock futures were advancing on Wednesday following Tuesday&#8217;s selloff. Futures of all four benchmark indices rose in premarket trading.
A trade war between major U.S. trading partners escalated on Tuesday as President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Canada and China swiftly retaliated with their tariffs on U.S. goods, mounting tensions and raising fears of a global economic slowdown.
During his joint address to Congress on Tuesday evening, Trump reiterated that &#8220;Tariffs are about making America rich again and making America great again. And it's happening. And it will happen rather quickly. There'll be a little disturbance, but we're okay with that.&#8221;
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.25%, while the two-year yield was at 3.98%. According to the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, there is a 93% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged for the March meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, rose in premarket on Wednesday. SPY was up 0.68% to $580.80, and QQQ advanced 0.87% to $499.87, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From The Last Session
Information technology was the only sector that was just above the flatline on Tuesday, while the market witnessed another day of fall led by financials, industrials, consumer staples, utilities, and consumer discretionary sectors. S&amp;P 500 declined 6% on Tuesday from its previous 52-week high of 6,147.43 points. 
The market erased its post-election gains after Trump confirmed a 25% levy on Canada and Mexico and an additional 10% tariff on China. He further stated during his Congress address that reciprocal tariffs will take effect April 2nd onwards.
Crowdstrike Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRWD#NASDAQ">CRWD</a>) issued a disappointing earnings forecast despite beating the fourth quarter estimates, Target Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) and Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BBY#NYSE">BBY</a>) also tanked on weaker than estimated outlook.

Insights From Analysts
As the tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and additional duties on China went live, Brian Therien, investment strategist at Edward Jones said that the eventual impact on inflation could be partially offset by currency exchange rates if the U.S. dollar strengthens relative to other currencies, making imported products less expensive.
&#8220;In addition, manufacturers may not be willing or able to fully pass along tariffs to customers, narrowing profit margins, which can also help mitigate price increases. The economic effect of tariffs could also be partially offset by pro-growth policies, such as tax cuts and deregulation,&#8221; he added.
However, economist Craig Shapiro argued that U.S. attempts to raise tariffs could be counterproductive as the dollar value may decline.
&#8220;As the Trump administration elevates the trade war with tariffs, perhaps the best defense the rest of the world has against him is simply selling their U.S. assets, taking their ball and going home,&#8221; he said.
Economist Peter Schiff also bashed tariffs saying that it was not the way to rebuild America&#8217;s manufacturing base and the competitiveness of the American industry needed to be restored. According to him, it required &#8220;higher interest rates, reduced consumption, lower asset prices, and a severe recession in the short run.&#8221;

As S&amp;P 500 slid nearly 6% from its previous high on Feb. 19, Ryan Detrick of Carson Research noted that the correction was &#8220;mild&#8221;. He cited 2023 as an example and said, &#8220;it had one 5% mild correction and one 10% correction.&#8221;
&#8220;Even the best years have volatility,&#8221; said Detrick.

Furthermore, he reinstated confidence among investors by highlighting that Wednesday has by far been the best day of the week in 2025.

The gold spot index was down by 0.04% to $2,916.72 per ounce. Its last record high was at $2,956.37 per ounce. The Dollar Index was down 0.75% at the 104.955 level.
Asian markets closed higher on Wednesday except Australia's ASX 200 index. India's S&amp;P BSE Sensex, China's CSI 300, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index advanced. European markets were also higher in trade.
