The surge in stocks is being fueled by a combination of factors. A major driver has been strong earnings. We are now past the halfway point of earnings season, and results have come in better than expected. Despite earlier concerns around tariffs, many companies have delivered solid reports and provided positive guidance.
Another catalyst has been the Trump administration's softer tone on trade. President Trump has signaled progress toward a potential deal with China, and optimism is building across the market. Many believe an agreement could be announced soon, and that news would likely send stocks even higher.
This week will bring another round of key earnings reports. Palantir, Uber, Disney, and Shopify are set to announce results, offering insights into different corners of the economy. Investors will be paying close attention to whether these companies issue guidance and how they are navigating the current environment.
On the economic front, the calendar is lighter than last week but still features a few potentially market-moving reports. Monday brings the ISM and PMI Services data, while Thursday will include the initial jobless claims report. I will also be watching the 10-year Treasury auction scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday.
While some skeptics continue to call this a bear market rally, I believe the gains can hold. The sharp selloff earlier this year felt overdone, and as long as trade tensions continue to ease, I expect the market to remain on solid footing.

'Messaging App Used By Trump Official Suspends Operations After Reported Hack' - CNBC

Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDDT#NYSE">RDDT</a>) stock is trading higher Monday after Seaport Global upgraded the stock from a Neutral rating to a Buy rating. Several analysts have raised price targets in response to earnings. Here&#8217;s what you <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/45172410">need to know.</a>
What To Know: Seaport analyst Aaron Kessler upgraded the stock following strong first-quarter revenue and EBITDA combined with solid guidance.
The analyst noted that while Reddit is facing challenges due to changes in Google's search algorithm, he still expects the company to grow over time, citing strong first-quarter results and a solid financial outlook.
Last week Reddit reported revenue of $392.36 million, beating the consensus estimate of $370.01 million. In addition, the company reported earnings per share of 13 cents, beating the consensus estimate of 2 cents.
The company sees second-quarter sales from $410 million to $430 million, versus the consensus estimate of $395.48 million.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COP#NYSE">COP</a>) shares fell 3.1% to $88.54 Monday afternoon as crude oil prices declined following OPEC+'s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45194998/saudi-arabias-oil-power-play-jolts-markets-can-diamondback-and-rivals-survive-the-squeeze">announcement</a> to boost oil production. 
What To Know: West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped around 2% after the group said it would increase output by 411,000 barrels per day in June, marking the third consecutive monthly hike. 
In total, OPEC+ will have added 960,000 barrels per day over April through June, reversing nearly half of the voluntary cuts made since 2022.
Saudi Arabia <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45194998/saudi-arabias-oil-power-play-jolts-markets-can-diamondback-and-rivals-survive-the-squeeze">led the push</a> for higher output to discipline overproducing members like Iraq and Kazakhstan and to reclaim market share.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia has granted an order approving the full separation of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.'s Studio and STARZ businesses into two independent, publicly-traded companies. The separation is anticipated to take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 6th. Lionsgate is expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol LION on Wednesday, May 7th.

The U.S. Treasury Department has sharply increased its borrowing estimate for the current quarter, projecting $514 billion in net marketable debt from April through June. That marks a stunning 317% jump from its earlier forecast of $123 billion, made just two months ago.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Changed?</h2>
The big shift is largely due to the government starting the quarter with far less cash on hand than expected. <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-28/us-boosts-net-borrowing-estimate-to-514-billion-this-quarter">Bloomberg</a> reported in February that the Treasury expected to have $850 billion in its coffers by the end of March. Instead, the balance was just $406 billion.

&#8220;Excluding the lower than assumed beginning-of-quarter cash balance, the current quarter borrowing estimate is $53 billion lower than announced in February,&#8221; Treasury <a href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0115">said</a> on Monday.
Bloomberg reported that lower balance is mostly the result of Congress still not raising the federal debt ceiling, which limits the government's ability to issue new debt. The Treasury is still assuming that the debt limit will be resolved and says it expects to have $850 billion in cash by the end of June. But if that doesn&#8217;t happen, borrowing would likely come in $53 billion lower than planned.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking Ahead</h2>
For the July through September quarter, the Treasury expects to borrow $554 billion, again assuming the cash balance reaches $850 billion by the end of the period.
The department also revised its look back at the first quarter of 2025. It had expected to borrow $815 billion but ended up needing just $369 billion, mainly due to ending that quarter with $444 billion less in cash than assumed.

According to Bloomberg, Wall Street had been bracing for a sharp increase in borrowing needs. JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) had forecast $255 billion in borrowing for the current quarter, based on a much lower cash balance projection. Meanwhile, Bloomberg also cites Lou Crandall, senior economist at Wrightson ICAP, who warned even before the announcement that the Treasury might raise its estimate if it continued assuming an &#8220;unrealistic&#8221; $850 billion end-of-quarter balance.
Crandall also said that President Donald Trump's recent <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44831287/trump-administration-imposes-up-to-245-tariff-on-chinese-imports-amid-intensifying-trade-battle">hikes in import duties</a> could be influencing Treasury's cash planning, as higher customs revenues flow in.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Public Reaction</h2>
The news of the Treasury's updated borrowing plan has stirred up a wave of reactions <a href="https://x.com/unusual_whales/status/1917161185482621188">online</a>. Some pointed out the irony of increased debt under a political movement that once promised fiscal discipline. Others questioned how the government could miscalculate its cash position so drastically in just a few months.

Dave Ramsey has been hosting "The Ramsey Show" for decades. He has spoken with many callers and has gone through quite a transformation since he started selling books from the back of his truck.
However, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Ramsey found himself in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu3BNkFoa2E">deja vu moment</a> when a caller asked him about building wealth in the current economy.&nbsp;
The caller has been listening to Ramsey since he was a child, and he is now 26 years old. He jumped on the show to ask Ramsey about building wealth in the current economy. It can seem bleak with tariffs capturing all of the headlines, but Ramsey encouraged the caller and other listeners to remain calm.
"This is not the first time the stock market has gone down," Ramsey said during the call.&nbsp;
Ramsey proceeded to offer a lesson in crafting an investor's mindset and how he views the current economy.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">When In Doubt, Zoom Out</h2>
Ramsey has been a financial guru for decades, so he has heard from callers over the years during stock market panics. For instance, he explained that people thought the world was going to end during the pandemic and that the U.S. economy would never recover.
While headlines seemed to agree with that consensus, Ramsey held his equities and benefited from the sharp recovery. Right now, a similar story is unfolding, where large publications are posting negative headlines about the stock market.
"The news is full of drama queens," Ramsey said while encouraging the caller to tune out the noise.&nbsp;
If you zoom out the S&amp;P 500 over the past five years, you will see some solid returns. Those returns get even better when you look over the past 10-20 years. However, you don't even have to look that far. Ramsey mentioned that the S&amp;P 500 gained more than 50% from the start of 2023 to the end of 2024.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Regularly Invest</h2>
Ramsey is an advocate of regularly buying reliable companies. He mentioned at the end of the call that he invests when the stock market is going up and also buys shares when the stock market is going down. He's not focused on the short-term noise and focuses on a stock's long-term potential instead.
He also said that he's looking for extra money to buy some extra shares during this period of economic uncertainty. Ramsey explained that Wall Street loathes uncertainty, and that's part of the reason why the market has delivered some big red days in recent weeks.&nbsp;
Investors who can ride the uncertainty may have the potential to generate strong returns. It's similar to Trump's tariffs during his first term. Investors panicked in 2018, and many of them sold their shares. Then, the stock market came roaring back in 2019, much to the delight of patient investors.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Younger Investors Typically Take More Risk</h2>
The caller mentioned that he is 26 years old, and that's normally an age where investors can take more risks. While we don't know enough about the caller's financial situation, it may be feasible for him to buy and hold stocks for many years, if not decades.
A lengthier time horizon gives you more time for assets to recover before you consider selling them. While it's optimal to buy and hold stocks forever, the caller should consider if he may have to sell shares within a few years to buy a house. However, the caller may be a few years away from that point.&nbsp;
You can also make low-risk investments, but the problem with these assets is that they produce low returns. CDs and high-yield savings accounts keep your money safe from stock market crashes, but these assets have woefully underperformed the S&amp;P 500 in the long run. The caller should assess how much risk he is willing to take and not let short-term noise distract him from his long-term financial goals.
