What Happened: The index last saw such a streak of decline in February 1978, according to FactSet data. However, the index has seen steeper crashes in a single day as compared to the cumulative erosion it has witnessed over these nine days.
Dow Jones has fallen nearly 3.47% to 43,449.90 points over the last nine days since Dec. 4, when it was at 45,014.04 points.

Why Is Dow Falling: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a price-weighted index based on 30 U.S. stocks, which first started as an index of 12 industrial stocks. The index has been subject to criticism for its limited scope, particularly its underrepresentation of technology stocks, a sector that has exhibited substantial growth in recent times.
Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) moved to the Dow Jones index, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/market-summary/24/11/41874537/nvidia-replaces-intel-on-dow-fineprint-of-what-led-to-the-change-along-with-stock-performance">replacing </a>Intel Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) on Nov. 4, this year. Nvidia has split its stock two times in the past four years, the most recent of which was a 10-for-1 swap that took effect in June, which has made it easier for Dow to include the shares in its gauge.
This is because Dow&#8217;s price-weighted methodology is troublesome for technology companies that abstain from splits and have shares trading above $1,000.
A given percentage change in the price of a higher-priced stock has a greater impact on the price-weighted index&#8217;s value than does an equal percentage change in the price of a lower-priced stock. Put another way, higher-priced stocks have more weight in the calculation of a price-weighted index.
Thus, the investor preference for technology stocks lately could also be a reason for the fall in the Dow Jones.
"The DJIA hasn't reflected its original intent in decades. It is not really a reflection of industrial America," said Mitchell Goldberg, president of ClientFirst Strategies in a <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7274891748726693889/">LinkedIn post</a>. "Its losing streak is more of a reflection of how investors are gorging themselves on tech stocks."

Price Action: The Dow has gained 15.21% on a year-to-date basis, 11.88% in the last six months and just 0.14% over the last month.
The exchange-traded fund tracking the index, SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) grew by 15.51% on a year-to-date basis, 11.93% over the last six months and just 0.32% over the last month.
The losing streak comes as investors braced for the Federal Reserve&#8217;s interest rate decision due on Wednesday. While a 25-basis-point rate cut is largely expected, market participants are wary of potential signals from the Fed regarding a slowdown in the pace of future rate reductions in 2025.
However, despite the recent downturn, the blue-chip index has still managed to remain 1,500 points, or 3.5%, above its level on Election Day.

Boeing Restarts 767, 777 Aircraft Production As Machinists Strike Ends After 7 Weeks

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) might need to undergo a costly and time-consuming update process to ward off the threat from quantum computing in the future, according to a Tuesday report that cited a study.
What Happened: The study, led by&nbsp;the University of Kent's School&nbsp;of Computing, estimated that a protocol update to protect Bitcoin from quantum computing threats would require taking the cryptocurrency offline for about 76 days provided 100% of the bandwidth is committed to the process, Forbes <a href="https://fortune.com/2024/12/17/bitcoin-downtime-update-quantum-computing-attack-study/">reported</a>.
However, if 25% of the bandwidth is allowed, which would allow users to continue mining and trading at a slower pace, the update would take nearly 305 days or 10 months.

In the scenario of 76 days of downtime, the update could cost around $912 million, the report estimated.
The more feasible 305-day downtime would lead to increased transaction fees and slower transaction confirmation times, leading to decreased market confidence.
The study found that Bitcoin had no other option but to replace the currently used cryptographic algorithm with the so-called "post-quantum" technology, which is immune to quantum attacks, and not doing so would be &#8220;devastating.&#8221;
Why It Matters: The increase in threat perception to Bitcoin&#8217;s encryption comes in the wake of Google&#8217;s new &#8220;Willow&#8221; quantum computing chip, which can <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42455205/will-googles-new-willow-chip-break-bitcoin-some-dismiss-it-as-fantasy-while-others-flag-risk-that-isnt-immediate">perform computations in five minutes</a> that would take supercomputers 10 septillion years to complete.

Himanshu Maradiya, the CEO of CIFDAQ, a blockchain ecosystem company, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/12/42420845/googles-quantum-willow-chip-lightyears-from-cracking-bitcoin-expert">stated that the chip was &#8220;lightyears away</a>&#8221; from breaking Bitcoin&#8217;s security.

Elon Musk&#8216;s rocket manufacturing company SpaceX reportedly lost ground control for at least an hour during the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40787779/spacex-launches-polaris-dawn-crew-to-space-with-aim-of-first-ever-private-spacewalk">Polaris Dawn mission</a> in September which included the first-ever private spacewalk.
What Happened: The loss of ground control was caused by a power outage at a California facility of SpaceX, according to a report by Reuters, which cited three people familiar with the matter.
The SpaceX mission control was unable to command its Dragon spacecraft in orbit during the outage but the vehicle remained safe and maintained some communication with the ground with the help of the company&#8217;s Starlink satellite network, the report added. 
The power outage triggered by a power surge disabled the mission headquarters in Hawthorne and also hit servers that host procedures meant to overcome an outage and stopped the company from transferring mission control to a backup facility in Florida, the report said.
Reuters, however, couldn&#8217;t determine if the company informed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about the outage. However, as per one of the agency&#8217;s sources, the company did notify NASA while adding that the problem has been resolved and will not be an issue in future missions. 
As per present regulations, private space missions are not regulated by U.S. law and private operators need not disclose mishaps in orbit owing to a moratorium approved by Congress in 2004, Reuters noted. 
Reuters could also not determine the exact time and duration of the outage. However, as per two of the agency&#8217;s sources, it happened before the planned spacewalk and lasted at least an hour. However, the astronauts were trained to control the spacecraft themselves in the event they lost contact with the ground, the report noted. 
Prior to the Polaris Dawn crew&#8217;s launch into space, Musk had said in a post on social media platform X that it was &#8220;triple-checking everything&#8221; to ensure there was nothing more it could do for crew safety. 
Why It Matters: The five-day Polaris Dawn mission included a spacewalk carried out by private astronauts including billionaire and Shift4 Payments CEO Jared Isaacman. President-elect Donald Trump nominated Isaacman to be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/12/42323934/shift4-payments-stock-drops-after-ceo-jared-isaacmans-nasa-nomination-whats-going-on">administrator of NASA</a> earlier this month. The nomination must be confirmed by the Senate before Isaacman is appointed.
As part of the mission, Isaacman&nbsp;and fellow crew member&nbsp;Sarah Gillis&nbsp;separately exited&nbsp;SpaceX‘s Dragon spacecraft into the vacuum of space at an altitude of 435 miles (700 km) on Sept. 12, marking the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40787779/spacex-launches-polaris-dawn-crew-to-space-with-aim-of-first-ever-private-spacewalk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first-ever private spacewalk.</a>
While space agency NASA routinely conducts extravehicular activities with government astronauts, no commercial player or civilians attempted it before, making Polaris a landmark mission for SpaceX and commercial spaceflight companies.
Trump in November named Musk to co-lead a government efficiency commission aimed at bringing down government bureaucracy, slashing excess regulations, cutting waste expenditures, and restructuring federal agencies. 
The billionaire is likely to further slash regulations in the private space exploration sector in his new role given that he has previously slammed the FAA for delaying SpaceX missions and even called for the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41041586/spacex-ceo-elon-musk-calls-for-resignation-of-faa-administrator-mike-whitaker">resignation of the agency&#8217;s leadership</a>.
In September, Musk called for &#8220;radical reform&#8221; at the FAA to enable SpaceX&#8217;s vision for taking humans to Mars. &#8220;The fundamental problem is that humanity will forever be confined to Earth unless there is radical reform at the FAA!,&#8221; Musk wrote in a post on X.

SpaceX Lost Ground Control On Dragon Spacecraft During Polaris Dawn Mission Due To Power Outage At California Facility: Report

Food delivery platform Grubhub must pay $25 million and make substantial operational changes following a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul over <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/11/41962459/just-eat-takeaway-sells-grubhub-to-wonder-for-650m-marking-strategic-exit-from-us-market">allegations of deceptive business practices</a>, officials announced Tuesday.
What Happened: The settlement resolves charges that Grubhub deceived customers about delivery costs, misled drivers about potential earnings, and listed restaurants on its platform without permission. According to the FTC&#8217;s complaint, the company had listed up to 325,000 unaffiliated restaurants &#8211; more than half of its total listings.
&#8220;Our investigation found that Grubhub tricked its customers, deceived its drivers, and unfairly damaged the reputation and revenues of restaurants that did not partner with Grubhub—all in order to drive scale and accelerate growth,&#8221; said FTC Chair Lina Khan in the announcement.
The settlement requires Grubhub to disclose true delivery costs and eliminate hidden fees. The company must also stop listing unaffiliated restaurants and provide evidence to support any driver earnings claims. For consumer accounts that were blocked, Grubhub must create an appeals process and ensure quick access to funds when blocks are removed.

Why It Matters: Internal company documents cited in the complaint revealed executives knew their pricing strategy was &#8220;misleading&#8221; and &#8220;eroding trust.&#8221; In one market, the FTC found drivers earned a median of $10 per hour despite advertisements promising up to $40 per hour.
While the FTC originally sought a $140 million judgment, the final $25 million settlement reflects Grubhub&#8217;s reported inability to pay the full amount. Most of the settlement funds will go toward consumer refunds.
The case highlights growing regulatory scrutiny of gig economy platforms. &#8220;There is no &#8216;gig platform&#8217; exemption to the laws on the books,&#8221; Khan emphasized in her statement.
