But like the sugar rush that child will feel, the stock rally fueled by China&rsquo;s mega-booster stimulus package two weeks ago is overdone, unsustainable and is almost certain to fade, unless there are additional fiscal measures that fully address the fundamental issues in the economy.
China&rsquo;s weak economy isn&rsquo;t going to improve overnight, and what&rsquo;s really needed right now is time to see if some of the new measures will be effective. Let&rsquo;s not forget that China has announced numerous similar measures that ultimately had little or no effect over the past two years, most aimed at boosting consumer demand and propping up the ailing property market.
At the same time, none of the measures will help to address other factors that are dragging on the Chinese economy, like geopolitics, the potential for new regulatory crackdowns at any time and local governments&rsquo; huge debt loads.
The stimulus package that got everyone so excited was announced on Sept. 24 and was seen as a highly anticipated &ldquo;big bazooka&rdquo; awaited by many for more than a year. Nearly all the measures were based in monetary policy, including cuts in the reserve requirement ratio for banks and lower interest rates.
The package also included several specific measures to support the property market, such as a cut in interest rates for existing mortgages and a reduction in the minimum downpayment requirement for home purchases. <h3>Beaten Down</h3>
Granted, Chinese stocks have been beaten down for about three years now, following the ultimately aborted New York IPO by DiDi Global in 2021. As a result, they have been vastly undervalued compared with global peers. For example, leading Chinese e-commerce companies Alibaba (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/baba#NYSE">BABA</a>) and JD.com (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jd#NASDAQ">JD</a>) now trade at relatively low P/E ratios of 29 and 16, respectively, even after the recent rally, both well behind the 44 for Amazon (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>).
The large new package obviously touches on several weak points in the economy. But Chinese consumers will need to feel much better about their financial wealth as well as employment and wage security to really boost the consumption that&rsquo;s needed to get the economy back on track.
Part of that will require job creation, including improvement in youth unemployment that is already high and continues to rise. It will also require income increases to make people more confident in the future. That could be hard to do in the current environment where salaries are being cut and previous bonuses even clawed back as China teeters on the brink of deflation.
China will also need to convince its increasingly despondent entrepreneurs that it&rsquo;s still possible and worth it to build a business in the country. That will mean finding ways to show that the regulatory crackdowns that cast a chill over China&rsquo;s private sector during the last three years are finally finished, or at least scaled back, and that there will be concrete actions to support the private sector in a centrally controlled economy that increasingly favors the state sector.
Then there is the property crisis, which is a direct result of the huge overbuilding of China&rsquo;s real estate market using large amounts of debt. This issue will take a long time and more than just lower downpayments to be meaningfully solved.
And there&rsquo;s also the issue of huge local government debt &ndash; largely the result of big spending on Covid controls during the pandemic, unbridled infrastructure building over the last two decades, and the real estate crisis. Lowering interest rates and home downpayments will hardly do much to address the latter, which is weighing heavily on local investment.
In the meantime, geopolitical issues that are putting a drag on exports and foreign investment in China aren&rsquo;t going away anytime soon. Things will only get worse in the run-up to the U.S. election next month, as both major parties agree on the China threat. Europe will also remain unhappy with China over its perception of unfair government support for Chinese exports, as well as Beijing&rsquo;s support for Russia&rsquo;s war against Ukraine.
In the end, verbal assurances, even from the very top, and another run at micro managing the stock market are not enough to fix China&rsquo;s problems. That will make it hard for stocks to keep up their recent rally and could even see the markets shift into reverse if investors decide to pocket some of their recent gains after three years of suffering.

As per SCMP, John Choi of&nbsp;Daiwa Securities&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/10/41188176/whats-going-on-with-chinese-stocks-alibaba-jd-nio-li-auto-xpeng-on-friday" rel="noreferrer noopener">expects e-commerce companies</a> to be the key beneficiaries of further stimulus measures, which were trading below their three- and five-year averages.
The rally reflects improved investor sentiment backed by Beijing&#8217;s stimulus measures and strong fund inflows into Chinese and Hong Kong equity markets, aiding the chip sector, the Wall Street Journal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/chinese-semiconductor-stocks-extend-rally-on-chinas-stimulus-measures-c315c062?mod=tech_lead_story" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.

China&#8217;s semiconductor sector has suffered since the pandemic erupted in 2020. The pandemic disrupted its supply chains and prompted the world to rethink its dependence on the Asian country for semiconductor chips for smartphones, cars, PCs, and other electronic gadgets.
The U.S. semiconductor sanctions on China further hampered its prospects. The embargo made it difficult for Chinese hyperscalars like Alibaba and peers to procure the sophisticated AI chips made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) for Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), impeding the country&#8217;s progress.

Chinese electric vehicle stocks, including&nbsp;NIO Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>),&nbsp;Li Auto Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>),&nbsp;XPeng Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>), and&nbsp;ZEEKR Intelligent Technology Holding (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZK#NYSE">ZK</a>) also saw gains Monday. China could launch a fiscal stimulus of 1.5 trillion yuan-2 trillion yuan, equivalent to $212.8 billion-$283.7 billion,&nbsp;the Wall Street Journal cites UBS&nbsp;economists.

These ten large-cap stocks were the best performers in the last week, dominated mostly by USA-listed Chinese stocks, which benefited from additional stimulus measures aimed at boosting China&#8217;s economy.

<li>Futu Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FUTU#NASDAQ">FUTU</a>) stock upped 49.37% after additional stimulus measures aimed at boosting China&#8217;s economy <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/41130855" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">were&nbsp;announced over the weekend</a>.&nbsp;</li>
<li>KE Holdings Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BEKE#NYSE">BEKE</a>) shares jumped 29.01% on continued strength following recent stimulus measures and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/41188162" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">start of the National Day Golden Week</a>.</li>

Alibaba&#8217;s e-commerce rivals, including PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>), JD.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>), and Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NASDAQ">BIDU</a>), saw gains on Friday.
In September, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/10/41141541/whats-going-on-with-chinese-stocks-alibaba-nio-xpeng-li-auto-on-wednesday" rel="noreferrer noopener">China&#8217;s central bank</a> shared plans to slash banks&#8217; reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 50 basis points or half a percentage point and reduce the seven-day reverse repurchase rate to 1.5% from 1.7% to spur domestic spending. Additionally, China agreed to let&nbsp;homeowners refinance mortgages.

John Choi of Daiwa Securities told the SCMP that stocks are trading below their three- and five-year averages. He expects e-commerce companies to be the key beneficiaries of further stimulus measures.
China&#8217;s stimulus package on September 24 restored over $3 trillion in market value to Chinese stocks in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and New York, SCMP cites Bloomberg data.
Alibaba stock gained 37% in the last 30 days. JD is up over 66%, Baidu 33% and PDD 65%.
The upcoming holiday shopping season also poses a tailwind for e-commerce stocks. Alibaba <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41045187/alibaba-follows-amazon-and-walmart-pours-5-7b-into-holiday-sales-push" rel="noreferrer noopener">earmarked 40 billion yuan</a> ($5.7 billion) in resources for Taobao and Tmall to tap the&nbsp;Singles&#8217; Day&nbsp;shopping festival on November 11.
The beaten-down Chinese electric vehicle stocks, including NIO Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>), Li Auto Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>), XPeng Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>), and ZEEKR Intelligent Technology Holding (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZK#NYSE">ZK</a>) also saw gains on Friday.
China has been battling a weak economy due to its export reliance and an aging population. The 2020 pandemic disrupted China&#8217;s semiconductor supply chains, triggering a crisis for semiconductor chips that go into smartphones, PCs, other electronic devices, and cars.
The intense domestic regulatory crackdown on the Chinese hyperscalars in the same year further added to the woes. The regulatory scrutiny cost Alibaba the initial public offering of its fintech affiliate Ant Group and severe ties with co-founder Jack Ma.
China&#8217;s property crisis posed an additional headwind. The real estate sector accounted for 25%-30% of the country&#8217;s GDP, Reuters reports. However, average home values tumbled from their 2021 highs after a regulatory crackdown on excessive debt among developers in 2020, leading to severe cash crunches, incomplete projects, defaults, and public protests by homebuyers.
China&#8217;s supply chain disruption prompted the U.S., Europe, and Japan to consolidate their semiconductor positions by ending their reliance on China.
China was the leading integrated circuit (IC) customer, accounting for 36% of U.S. semiconductor sales in 2022, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.citigroup.com/global/insights/who-s-winning-the-us-china-chip-war-" rel="noreferrer noopener">Citi</a>. The leading semiconductor market represented 31.4% of global final sales, or $180 billion out of $574 billion in 2022, according to Citi.
Additionally, the U.S. imposed semiconductor sanctions on China, citing national security reasons, cutting it off from advanced artificial intelligence chips and further restricting its growth prospects.
In August, China&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/08/40650893/alibaba-clears-3-year-regulatory-antitrust-scrutiny-stock-gains" rel="noreferrer noopener">signaled an end</a> to its regulatory crackdown on hyperscalars like Alibaba. The regulator fined Alibaba $2.8 billion in 2021, which amounted to 4% of the e-commerce juggernaut&#8217;s 2019 revenue.

Despite the pullback, Alibaba and Baidu shares are still up about 40% over the past month, while JD is up about 70% and PDD Holdings is up about 65%. 
China-based EV names were also seeing weakness. NIO Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) was down 5.13% at $6.84, XPeng Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) was down 5.17% at $12.65 and Li Auto Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>) was down 4.08% at $26.68 at the time of writing.

Why It Matters: Bloomberg reported that Chinese markets are reacting to rising concerns over a potentially widening war in the Middle East. The tensions pose several threats to emerging markets, which has dampened optimism around China&#8217;s recent stimulus push. 
"The conflict definitely weighs on sentiment but may have different fundamental impacts across emerging-market countries," said Fredrik Bjelland, portfolio manager of the Skagen Kon-Tiki emerging-market fund. 
"In the short term, I would expect any negative impact to first be geographically linked but on a longer-term horizon to be more fundamentally linked. An elevated risk premium in the oil market could have consequences for import-dependent countries."
Although China stocks are taking a breather on Thursday, analysts largely remain positive. HSBC upgraded Chinese stocks to Overweight, noting that it&#8217;s still &#8220;not too late&#8221; to jump in, while Morgan Stanley suggested China stocks could rally another 10% to 15% from current levels.

China Stocks Are Cooling Off Thursday: What's Going On?

Chinese e-commerce juggernaut Alibaba Group Holding (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) and rival JD.com, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) are aggressively fighting for market share in Hong Kong.
The companies waived delivery fees for certain orders and boosted related services like local product returns in Hong Kong, SCMP <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3280951/alibaba-jdcom-take-e-commerce-battle-hong-kong-mainland-china-market-matures?module=Tech%20Trends&amp;pgtype=section" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
The stocks are trading lower Thursday after a rally led by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/10/41141541/whats-going-on-with-chinese-stocks-alibaba-nio-xpeng-li-auto-on-wednesday" rel="noreferrer noopener">China&#8217;s stimulus plans</a>.

Alibaba committed 1 billion yuan ($142 million) to boost its online retail platform Taobao&#8217;s offerings in Hong Kong. This is part of a campaign to ship orders above 99 yuan for free to one of the city&#8217;s more than 800 self-pickup stations.
JD.com earmarked 1.5 billion yuan to roll out new services in Hong Kong, including free door-to-door deliveries for specific orders above 299 yuan.
E-commerce consultant Jacob Cooke told SCMP that Hong Kong&#8217;s proximity and relatively low e-commerce penetration rate make it an attractive growth market.
Cooke also flagged the higher cost of operating in Hong Kong, which poses a challenge in efficiently scaling logistics.
Due to lackluster domestic demand, Alibaba and its rivals had already waged a price war in China in the e-commerce and cloud businesses.
Price Actions: At the last check on Thursday, BABA stock was down 4.27% at $110.33 in the premarket session. JD was down 4.87%.

Alibaba and JD.com Battle for Hong Kong Shoppers, Stocks Slide After Stimulus Rally

Shares of US-listed Chinese stocks are trading lower as the sector pulls back from recent strength. These companies rallied after the People's Bank of China announced a new stimulus package ahead of the Golden Week holidays.

MMTec, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTC#NASDAQ">MTC</a>) shares are moving higher on Wednesday on continued strength in Chinese stocks after China&#8217;s Central Bank announced <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41097864/china-stocks-jump-as-stimulus-optimism-mounts-whats-going-on">stimulus measures</a> last week. 
Additionally National Day Golden Week, a week long public holiday, kicked off on Tuesday.
What To Know: The bank&#8217;s stimulus measures include a cut to the reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points, lowering the loan prime rate and deposit rates by 0.2 to 0.25 percentage points and decreasing the seven-day reverse repurchase rate to 1.5%.
Capital Economics chief Asia Economist Mark Williams told Reuters that the package, &#8220;would lift annual output by 0.4% relative to what it would otherwise have been. It&#8217;s late in the year, but a new package of this size that was implemented soon should be enough to deliver growth in line with the &#8216;around 5%&#8217; target.&#8221;
Traditionally, China sees an increase in tourism during the week long holiday leading to a boost in China&#8217;s economy. However, the recent slowness in the country&#8217;s economy may lead to lower travel related spending throughout the holiday.
Besides MMTEC, other US-listed Chinese stocks are also moving higher on Wednesday following the bank&#8217;s stimulus measures, including JD.Com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>).

What's Going On With MMTec Shares Wednesday?

Alibaba Group Holding (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) and domestic rival stocks continued their rally since China announced stimulus plans to spur demand. Alibaba peers, including Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NASDAQ">BIDU</a>), JD.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>), and PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>), traded higher on Wednesday.
Last week, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41089672/whats-going-on-with-alibaba-stock-on-monday" rel="noreferrer noopener">China&#8217;s central bank</a> shared plans to cut banks&#8217; reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 50 basis points or half a percentage point and lower the seven-day reverse repurchase rate to 1.5% from 1.7%. Additionally, China agreed to let <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41097864/china-stocks-jump-as-stimulus-optimism-mounts-whats-going-on" rel="noreferrer noopener">homeowners refinance mortgages</a>.
Shawn Yang of Arete Research and Appaloosa Management founder David Tepper rated Chinese e-commerce juggernaut Alibaba as the key beneficiary of the stimulus. Tepper&nbsp;increased exposure to Alibaba and rival stocks.
In August, China <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/08/40650893/alibaba-clears-3-year-regulatory-antitrust-scrutiny-stock-gains" rel="noreferrer noopener">signaled an end</a> to its domestic regulatory crackdown on hyperscalars like Alibaba. The Chinese tech companies led by Alibaba have started opening up their &#8220;walled gardens&#8221; to one another to stay clean in the eyes of the regulators.
Chinese electric vehicle stocks, including NIO Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>), Li Auto Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>), XPeng Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>), and ZEEKR Intelligent Technology Holding (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZK#NYSE">ZK</a>), are trading higher on Wednesday, in anticipation of boost in demand from the stimulus package. The companies noted a significant update in their third-quarter and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/10/41114350/chinese-ev-trio-nio-xpeng-li-auto-surge-higher-in-tuesdays-premarket-whats-going-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">September 2024 delivery</a>.
