Nordstrom is a fashion retailer that operates about 93 department stores and 280 off-price Nordstrom Rack stores. The company also operates both full- and off-price e-commerce sites, two clearance stores, and six Local locations. Nordstrom's largest merchandise categories are women's apparel (27% of 2023 sales), shoes (26% of 2023 sales), men's apparel (15% of 2023 sales), and beauty (13% of 2023 sales). Nordstrom, which traces its history to a shoe store opened in Seattle in 1901, continues to be partially owned and managed by members of the eponymous family. They have partnered with Mexican retailer El Puerto de Liverpool to acquire the company.

The SPDR S&amp;P Retail ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XRT#NYSE">XRT</a>) is trading lower Tuesday as retail and apparel stocks fall following weak consumer spending data and<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/03/44246040/kohls-anticipates-sales-and-profit-dip-in-2025-slashes-dividend-by-75-stock-tanks"> poor earnings reports.</a>
What To Know: Kohl's Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KSS#NYSE">KSS</a>) is dragging the sector lower after the company reported a sharp drop in fourth-quarter sales and issued weak guidance for 2025.
For fiscal year 2025, Kohl's expects sales to decline by 5% to 7% and comparable sales to fall by 4% to 6%. The company also cut its quarterly dividend by 75% to $0.125 per share. Kohl's expects 2025 earnings per share between 10 cents and 60 cents, well below Wall Street's estimate of $1.25.
The retail sector is also under pressure as consumer spending weakens. February retail sales declined again after a drop in January, signaling a slowdown in consumer demand. Investors are also watching inflation closely, with the next Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report due on March 28.
Why It Matters: Kohl's sharp stock decline and the broader retail selloff reflect growing concerns about slowing consumer spending and its impact on major retailers. With inflation still elevated and household budgets tightening, discretionary spending is falling, putting pressure on companies reliant on consumer demand. Investors are watching upcoming economic data closely for more signals on consumer weakness and its impact on retail stocks.

Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SBUX#NASDAQ">SBUX</a>) announced the appointment of Cathy R. Smith as its new executive vice president and chief financial officer.
She will also serve as the company&#8217;s principal financial officer and principal accounting officer, with the effective date yet to be determined.
The company also announced that Rachel Ruggeri would no longer serve as its executive vice president, chief financial officer and principal financial officer and principal accounting officer, effective, in each case, as of a date to be determined.
Ms. Smith&#8217;s hiring follows an extensive career in various executive financial roles, most recently as the CFO of Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JWN#NYSE">JWN</a>), where she worked since 2023.
She has previously held high-ranking financial roles at companies such as Target Corporation, Express Scripts, and Walmart Inc.
Her experience extends to other major companies, including GameStop Corp, Centex, Kennametal, Textron, and Raytheon, where she began her career in 1986.

In addition, Ms. Smith serves on the board of directors for PPG Industries and Baxter International. Smith holds an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MBA from the University of Southern California.
As part of her appointment, Starbucks will compensate Ms. Smith with a $925,000 annual base salary and a 125% cash incentive target based on her salary, prorated for fiscal year 2025.
According to a regulatory filing, Ms. Smith will forfeit approximately $15 million in cash incentive and equity awards in connection with her departure from her prior employer.
To join Starbucks, Ms. Smith will receive a cash signing bonus of $5 million and will also receive a replacement equity grant with a target value of $6.40 million. Further, Ms. Smith will receive a fiscal year 2025 annual equity award with a target value of $4.50 million.
The announcement comes as Starbucks is making major <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43917692/starbucks-lays-off-1100-corporate-employees-in-major-restructuring" rel="noreferrer noopener">organizational adjustments </a>through its &#8220;Back to Starbucks&#8221; initiative, designed to optimize operations and position the business for future expansion.
Last week, the company said it would eliminate 1,100 support roles, along with several hundred additional unfilled positions.
Recently, Starbucks reported first-quarter revenue of $9.4 billion and earnings of 69 cents per share, both well&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/restaurants/25/01/43288533/starbucks-q1-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-memberships-up-1-positive-response-to-turnaround-efforts" rel="noreferrer noopener">above the consensus estimate</a>.

In premarket trading on Monday, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) was down 0.76% to $576.10&nbsp;and the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) dropped 1.16% to $501.35, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From The Last Session
Wall Street suffered significant losses last week, erasing all gains since the election. This was primarily driven by a robust jobs report, which increased concerns about persistent inflation and further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The week&#8217;s trading was also impacted by rising geopolitical tensions and increased inflation expectations.
The session witnessed considerable losses among growth equities, particularly those with high valuations and exposure to interest rate sensitivity. This included semiconductor companies such as Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>), as well as technology firms like Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>).
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1.63% lower at 41,938.45, down approximately 697 points. The S&amp;P 500 Index fell 1.54% to 5,827.04, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 1.63% to 19,161.63. Russell 200, on the other hand, fell 2.22% to 2,189.23.

Insights From Analysts
On <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42939374/as-bond-yields-near-the-crucial-5-mark-last-seen-briefly-in-2023-and-global-financial-crisis-this-analyst-says-market-appears-to-be-overreacting">Friday</a>, the U.S. 30-year Treasury yielded 4.950% by the end of the trading session, however, it touched a high of 5.005% intraday. The 10-year Treasury, on the other hand, yielded an intraday high of 4.790% to settle at 4.762% on Friday.
&#8220;It is most likely that the pressure on interest rates is being driven by inflation fears from the soon-to-be-announced tariffs that Trump 2.0 will bring.&#8221; said Louis Navellier, the chairman and founder of Navellier &amp; Associates. &#8220;The market appears to be overreacting,&#8221; he added.
Ed Yardeni and Eric Wallerstein in their note called &#8216;Bond Vigilantes Spoking Stock Jockey&#8217; said, &#8220;If Tuesday&#8217;s CPI inflation rate for December is higher than expected, causing the 10-year Treasury bond yield to revisit 2023&#8217;s high of 5.00%.&#8221;
As the stocks struggled after Friday&#8217;s reports and bond yields&#8217; reaction, Yardeni and Navellier said that this dip was a buying opportunity.
Navellier said that the market could be additionally reacting to the uncertainty on what the Fed may do. Stocks, however, are taking the higher yields to heart, he added, saying &#8220;There&#8217;s no reason to panic.&#8221; as the pullback on higher rates is likely a &#8220;buying opportunity unless earnings disappoint.&#8221;
Yardeni also reiterated its forecast of 7,000 points on the S&amp;P 500 by the end of the year. &#8220;We still believe that the 10-year Treasury bond yield should trade mostly between 4.25% and 4.75% this year. So we think that the selloffs in the stock and bond markets are buying opportunities.&#8221;
Carson Research&#8217;s VP and global macro strategist, Sonu Varghese in a blog post said that it's not useful to read too much into market moves, especially short-term ones.
He argues that the interest rates are higher because the market likely thinks stronger job creation and economy, will put more upward pressure on inflation, which means the Federal Reserve will have to pause on rate cuts. &#8220;Markets are now expecting just one rate cut in 2025 (with a probability of under 25% for a second one) and don't expect it to happen before June,&#8217; he added.

US Stock Futures Indicate Lower Opening On Monday After Last Week's Steep Fall: Analyst Says It's A 'Buying Opportunity,' But Market May Dip Further If This Happens

With U.S. stock futures trading lower this morning on Monday, some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are as follows:

<li>WD-40 Company (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WDFC#NASDAQ">WDFC</a>) posted better-than-expected results for its first quarter and reiterated its FY25 guidance on Friday. WD-40 shares gained 5.5% to $254.00 in the after-hours trading session.</li>
<li>Analysts are expecting KB Home (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KBH#NYSE">KBH</a>) to post quarterly earnings at $2.45 per share on revenue of $1.99 billion. WD-40 Company, KB Home And 3 Stocks To Watch Heading Into Monday

Based on holiday results, the Company has updated its fiscal 2024 outlook. The Company now expects revenue growth, including retail sales and credit card revenues, of 1.5 to 2.5 percent versus the 53-week fiscal 2023, which includes an approximately 135 basis point unfavorable impact from the 53rd week, compared with its prior outlook of flat to 1.0 percent growth. Additionally, the Company expects comparable sales growth of 2.5 to 3.5 percent versus 52 weeks in fiscal 2023, compared with its prior outlook of 1.0 to 2.0 percent growth.

Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JWN#NYSE">JWN</a>) today announced a total Company net sales increase of 4.9 percent and a comparable sales increase of 5.8 percent for the nine-week holiday period ended January 4, 2025, compared with the nine weeks ended December 30, 2023. For the Nordstrom banner, net sales increased 3.7 percent and comparable sales increased 6.5 percent, while Nordstrom Rack banner net sales increased 7.4 percent and comparable sales increased 4.3 percent.

UBS analyst Jay Sole upgrades Nordstrom (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JWN#NYSE">JWN</a>) from Sell to Neutral and raises the price target from $14.5 to $24.

Foot traffic at retailers soared on Dec. 21, the Saturday before Christmas. Here's a look at the potential winners from the last week <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/12/42273676/walmart-target-bath-body-works-stand-out-as-black-friday-winners-analysts">of holiday shopping.</a>
What Happened: Foot traffic at retailers was up an average of 58% compared to daily averages in 2024, a trend that could see retail stocks benefit for the 2024 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/42247997/walmart-shoppers-shun-electronics-for-black-friday-deals-on-eggs-bread-slippers">holiday shopping season.</a>
The 58% gain to the daily average, <a href="https://www.placer.ai/blog/super-saturday-2024-recap">reported </a>by Placer.ai, is higher than the 51.1% gain over the daily average seen on Black Friday. Sunday, Dec. 22, also saw retail foot traffic up 38.2% to the daily average.
While foot traffic was up compared to the daily average for the year, the 58% gain was smaller than last year's Super Saturday, which saw a 74.4% increase from the daily average. The caveat with last year's data is that Super Saturday was Dec. 23, one of the last remaining shopping days before Christmas.
Among the potential biggest winners for this year's Christmas shopping season could be department stores, based on the report.
Overall foot traffic to department stores was up 128.7% compared to the Saturday 2024 daily average, surpassing last year&#8217;s 119.4% increase over the 2023 Saturday average.
Among the department stores tracked by Placer.ai, these were the year-over-year visit growth:

The report also found that recreational and sporting goods stores, beauty and self-care stores and other specialty categories saw strong traffic gains. Here's a look at some of the retailers tracked and the foot traffic gains on a year-over-year basis to last year's Super Saturday:

The report found that superstores, grocery stores, and discount retailers saw lower year-over-year growth due to last year's timing of Super Saturday being so close to Christmas.
Indoor shopping malls like those owned by Simon Property Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPG#NYSE">SPG</a>) may have also benefitted from Super Saturday. Placer.ai data shows that foot traffic to indoor malls was up 177.1% on Super Saturday compared to the 2024 daily average.

Why It's Important: Ahead of Super Saturday, the National Retail Foundation <a href="https://nrf.com/media-center/press-releases/157-million-consumers-to-shop-on-super-saturday">estimated </a>that 157.2 million consumers would shop on the shopping holiday based on an annual survey.
The figure comes in higher than the 141.9 million Super Saturday shoppers in 2024 and is the second highest figure over the last nine years, trailing only 158.5 million in 2022.
"Super Saturday is one of the last opportunities during the holiday season for consumers to get the remaining items on their shopping list," NRF Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights Katherine Cullen said.
Cullen cited the shortened holiday shopping season, due to Thanksgiving falling late in November, boosting the odds of last-minute shoppers.
The survey found that 69.5 million people plan to shop both in-store and online, up from 58.3 million in 2023. The amount of people exclusively shopping in-store was down in the survey from 37% to 31%, while the percentage of people who said they would shop exclusively online increased from 22% to 24%.
Similar to the results above, the NRF survey highlighted department stores as potential winners on Super Saturday, with 37% of shoppers saying they planned to finish their holiday shopping there.
Finishing shopping online was the most popular response at 49%, with discount stores named by 27% of consumers and clothing and accessory stores named by 25% of consumers.
The NRF survey found the most popular gift purchases were clothing and accessories (50%), toys (32%), gift cards (26%) and books, video games and other media (24%).
The shortened holiday shopping season could have been good for retailers with more foot traffic each day and especially on the weekends. The key will be if the daily increase is enough to offset the lower number of total shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The post-Christmas shopping time could also see a boost, with 71% of consumers in the survey saying they planned to shop after Christmas, similar to last year's survey.
NRF estimates that the entire holiday shopping season of Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 is expected to be up 2.5% to 3% from 2024, hitting a record range of $979.5 billion to $989 billion.
