Shares of Macy&#8217;s, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/M#NYSE">M</a>) rose <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/39645354/whats-going-on-with-department-store-major-macys-shares-on-friday">sharply during Friday's session</a>.
An investor group aiming to purchase Macy's has reportedly increased its bid for the second time after previous offers failed. Arkhouse Management and Brigade Capital Management recently raised their proposal by approximately $300 million, reported The Wall Street Journal.
Macy&#8217;s shares jumped 10.4% to $19.79 on Friday.

When it comes to social media frenzies, securities that meme trader Keith Gill &mdash; known online as &ldquo;Roaring Kitty&rdquo; &mdash; own do not represent the only avenue for extreme upside. Rather, speculation about what Gill could buy next can be just as powerful. Consider the case of consumer electronics specialist Koss (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/koss-stock-quote/">KOSS</a>), which went skyrocketing last week. Unfortunately, the fervor appears to have faded, with KOSS stock down sharply on Monday.



At one point, shares slipped more than 20% before modestly paring back some of the red ink. According to a Reuters report, some of Gill&rsquo;s followers took note of a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/meme-stock-speculation-propels-koss-shares-25-higher-friday-2024-07-05/">cryptic post</a> that the trader made on social media. Scrolled across at the end of a video, an image shown as an emoji featured a microphone with the U.S. flag set in the background.



Some retail investors speculated that Roaring Kitty would acquire KOSS stock on or around the Independence Day holiday. Given Gill&rsquo;s history of obscure social media activities leading to significant investment positions, excitement over the consumer electronics firm soared. However, other voices expressed skepticism, noting that Koss is primarily a headphone manufacturer.



Unfortunately, Gill has <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/kosss-stock-pares-gains-after-spike-amid-rumors-of-interest-from-roaring-kitty-0092990e">yet to make a public post</a> about KOSS stock directly. As a result, speculators may have become disheartened, hence Monday&rsquo;s big loss.



<h2>The Fundamentals Eventually Mattered for KOSS Stock</h2>



In the investment market, a commonly expressed theme is that the fundamentals will eventually matter. Stated differently, it&rsquo;s always possible for an equity to become disassociated with the <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/fundamentals.asp">core set of qualitative and quantitative data</a> that undergirds a company&rsquo;s valuation. At some point, though, this disassociation tends to correct itself.



That may also be contributing to the current weakness in KOSS stock. Steve Sosnick, a market strategist at Interactive Brokers, stated simply that &ldquo;[t]here are absolutely no fundamental reasons why this company might be worth four times what it was at the beginning of the week.&rdquo;



It&rsquo;s worth pointing out that according to Yahoo Finance, KOSS stock trades at <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/KOSS/key-statistics/">10.02x trailing-year sales</a>. However, the average revenue multiple between the first quarter of 2023 and Q1 2024 sat at only 2.4x.



Moreover, Sosnick and other traders stated that almost 50% of the company&rsquo;s 9.25 million shares are held by insiders. That means the public float is quite small, allowing for modest purchasing upticks to result in robust swings. At the same time, the opposite is also true, contributing to today&rsquo;s market volatility.

KOSS Stock Plunges 20% as Roaring Kitty Hype Fades

<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/meme-stocks/">Meme stocks</a> looked to be on the comeback trail in May of this year after retail trader Keith Gill, known online as &ldquo;Roaring Kitty,&rdquo; made a triumphant <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/12/investing/premarket-stocks-trading-meme-gamestop/index.html">return to social media</a> after a three-year hiatus. By posting only a few cryptic memes heralding his return, Gill managed to more than double the share prices of popular undervalued meme stocks such as GameStop (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gme-stock-quote/">GME</a>) and AMC Entertainment (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amc-stock-quote/">AMC</a>).



Other undervalued meme stocks, such as headphone maker Koss (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/koss-stock-quote/">KOSS</a>) saw their <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/meme-stock-speculation-propels-koss-204937539.html">stocks rise more than 20%</a> on news of Gill&rsquo;s return. Meme stocks are defined as shares of a company that have gained viral popularity due to heightened social media attention. They tend to be stocks of once-dominant companies that have fallen on hard times and whose shares are heavily shorted on Wall Street.



As is typically the case, the meme stock rally of late May did not last long and most of the companies involved saw their <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/video/meme-stock-trade-maintain-momentum-202206838.html">share prices fall</a> back to earth throughout June. The pullback has left many meme stocks deep in the red and looking cheap at current levels. Here are the seven most undervalued meme stocks to buy in July 2024.



<h2>GameStop (GME)</h2>

Setting aside the return of Roaring Kitty, the brick-and-mortar video game retailer continues to report abysmal financial results that are weighing on its share price. Results were particularly bad for this year&rsquo;s first quarter, which management issued along with plans to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/07/gamestop-gme-q1-earnings.html">sell additional GME stock</a>, further diluting the holdings of existing shareholders.



The end result is that GameStop stock has declined 50% from the peak it reached in mid-May this year when Roaring Kitty resurfaced. The company&rsquo;s shares are 70% below the all-time high they reached in January 2021 during the original meme stock craze. GameStop&rsquo;s sales in the first three months of this year totaled $881.8 million, down 29% from $1.237 billion a year ago. News of the stock dilution appears to have dampened enthusiasm over Roaring Kitty&rsquo;s return. That and <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/01/business/roaring-kitty-sued-for-pump-and-dump-scheme-with-gamestop-stock/">a class-action lawsuit</a> alleging a classic pump-and-dump. 



<h2>Trump Media &amp; Technology Group (DJT)</h2>

DJT stock"><div>Source: rafapress / Shutterstock.com</div></div>GameStop&rsquo;s earnings look sterling when compared to the finances of Trump Media &amp; Technology Group (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/djt-stock-quote/">DJT</a>). The company, which runs the Truth Social platform that is essentially a clone of Twitter, reported <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-media-earnings-0ee9a4598f7da6c217720445605dfbdd">a net loss</a> for this year&rsquo;s first quarter of $327.6 million on less than $1 million in revenue. Consequently, it&rsquo;s been a bumpy ride for DJT stock in recent months.



The <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/business/trump-media-technology-group-value/index.html">share price has fallen 55%</a> from a peak reached in March of this year shortly after the company went public through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). DJT stock also fell 15% after former President Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business documents in a criminal hush money case. More recently, the stock has fallen 30% in the last month.



While the share price decline is disappointing, it has certainly made DJT stock cheaper to buy for investors with an appetite for risk. 



<h2>Tilray Brands (TLRY)</h2>

The company most recently reported a quarterly loss of $105 million and lowered its forward guidance as its sales continue to decline. The result is that <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/tilray-stock-tanks-following-earnings-miss-outlook-cut-8628796">TLRY stock has fallen 20%</a> this year. Over five years, the stock has declined 96% and now trades deep down on the penny stock league tables.



Tilray said that it expects earnings of only $60 million to $63 million for its entire 2024 financial year. The <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2024/05/26/tilray-brands-just-slashed-its-guidance-is-it-a-bu/">new guidance</a> is down from earlier estimates of $68 million to $78 million in earnings. Management said they no longer expect positive free cash flow this financial year. The deteriorating situation has raised concerns about Tilray&rsquo;s ability to continue operating. Still, TLRY stock is not available to buy for less than $2 a share.



<h2>BlackBerry (BB)</h2>

As with the other undervalued meme stocks, BlackBerry&rsquo;s share price is declining as the company reports woefully bad financial results. In this year&rsquo;s first quarter, BlackBerry&rsquo;s net loss grew by nearly 300% as its sales continued to deteriorate. The former smartphone maker reported a Q1 loss of $42 million, which was 282% greater than a net loss of $11 million a year earlier.



Revenue at BlackBerry totaled $144 million in Q1, down 61% from $373 million a year ago. The poor results come as BlackBerry prepares to divide its cybersecurity business and its Internet of Things (IoT) division. BlackBerry is also <a href="https://www.baystreet.ca/techinsider/4377/BlackBerrys-Net-Loss-Widens-By-Nearly-300-As-Sales-Plummet">cutting costs </a>as its financial situation worsens. Earlier this year, the company eliminated 200 jobs and closed six of its 36 global offices. It remains to be seen if the measures will be enough to right the ship.



BB stock has declined 50% in the last 12 months. 



<h2>Fisker (FSRNQ)</h2>

Electric vehicle start-up Fisker (OTC:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/fsrnq-stock-quote/">FSRNQ</a>) has <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/ev-startup-fisker-files-bankruptcy-2024-06-18/">filed for bankruptcy protection</a> from its creditors and plans to sell its assets. The company&rsquo;s stock now trades for less than two cents on the over-the-counter market. But that hasn&rsquo;t stopped retail investors from bidding up this troubled meme stock. Fisker stock continues to pop occasionally as investors nibble at it, though the share price is down 99% on the year.



Fisker is the latest in a string of electric vehicle companies to seek bankruptcy protection from creditors, following Lordstown Motors. Analysts say the businesses are failing as the electric vehicle stock bubble bursts and consumers move away from battery-powered autos in favor of gas-electric hybrid models. Fisker made more than 10,000 vehicles in 2023 but delivered only about 4,700. This is the second time Fisker has filed for <a href="https://www.financierworldwide.com/fisker-automotive-files-for-chapter-11">Chapter 11 bankruptcy</a>. The company now plans to sell its assets and restructure its debt.



<h2>Canopy Growth (CGC)</h2>

(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cgc-stock-quote/">CGC</a>). On the surface, things look to be improving for this company&rsquo;s stock. The share price has risen nearly 30% this year and is trading above $6. But don&rsquo;t be fooled. The gains and current share price are due to Canopy Growth executing <a href="https://www.baystreet.ca/stockstowatch/16668/Canopy-Growths-Stock-Falls-20-On-News-Of-Reverse-Stock-Split">a reverse stock split</a>. Reverse stock splits are the opposite of regular stock splits. Rather than reduce the share price, they raise it by consolidating the stock.



Reverse stock splits are seen by markets as an act of desperation by companies that are trying to artificially boost their share price, often to avoid being delisted from an exchange. In the case of Canopy Growth, the company was in danger of being delisted by the Nasdaq exchange as its share price had been trading below $1. In response, the company <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/12/canopy-growth-just-enacted-a-1-for-10-reverse-split-of-cgc-stock/">consolidated its shares</a> on a one-for-10 basis. Over the last five years, CGC stock has fallen 98% amid speculation that the company will file for bankruptcy.



<h2>AMC Entertainment (AMC)</h2>

The largest U.S. movie theater chain saw its share price more than double when Roaring Kitty resurfaced. Unfortunately, the stock has since dropped 20% from a peak reached in mid-May and is on the cusp of falling into penny stock territory. In the last 12 months, AMC <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/07/from-meme-darling-to-99-crash-is-this-amc-stocks-final-act/">stock has decreased 85%</a>, making the shares cheap if not undervalued. 



AMC Entertainment continues to struggle with a decline in moviegoers that began during the COVID-19 crisis and a big debt load that it took on during the pandemic when its theaters were closed or forced to operate at reduced capacity. At the start of this year, AMC had <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/amc-stock-price-buy-sell-3fde93fb">$8.6 billion of long-term debt</a>, up from $5.2 billion before the pandemic. The company did manage to narrowly <a href="https://www.streetinsider.com/Earnings/AMC+Entertainment+%28AMC%29+Tops+Q1+EPS+by+1c%2C+Beats+on+Revenue%3B+Offers+Guidance+Comments/23195187.html">beat analysts&rsquo; forecasts</a> with its Q1 print. So there might still be hope for the company and its shareholders.

Can you trust the people giving you advice on social media? That&rsquo;s a question everyone should take the time to ask themselves.



The rise of influencer marketing has created a convenient avenue for companies to push questionable or even dangerous products into the American mainstream. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have enabled average people to reach influencer status and companies have seized the opportunity to expose new markets to their offerings &mdash; even if they aren&rsquo;t safe or advisable. For example, social media influencers have promoted tobacco products to non-smokers and dangerous tanning products to young people with very little regulation. Now, this dangerous trend has infected financial markets as well.&nbsp;



This is evident in the recent resurgence of Keith Gill (aka Roaring Kitty), the social media influencer credited with launching the GameStop (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gme-stock-quote/">GME</a>) short squeeze.&nbsp;Gill retreated from the public eye after the 2021 GME stock short squeeze momentum died down, by which point, Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-is-keith-gill-now-dumb-money-movie-gamestop-2023-9">reports</a>, his position in the video game retailer had reached a value of $30 million. For years after that, he remained quiet on YouTube and Reddit, platforms on which he had amassed a significant following.&nbsp;



But on May 12, 2024, with no warning, Gill resurfaced on X (formerly Twitter) by sharing an <a href="https://x.com/TheRoaringKitty/status/1789807772542067105?lang=en">image of a man playing video games</a>. Gill offered no context, but he didn&rsquo;t need to. <a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/meme-stocks/">Meme stocks</a> such as GameStop and AMC Entertainment (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amc-stock-quote/">AMC</a>) surged almost instantly.&nbsp;



However, meme stock rallies often fizzle out quickly, and this time proved to be no exception. Gill&rsquo;s initial post proved effective at sending GME stock up more than 170% while AMC and fellow meme stock Koss (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/koss-stock-quote/">KOSS</a>) enjoyed similar momentum. But less than a week later, the momentum subsided and shares fell significantly (although they remained elevated year-to-date).



As shares battled high volatility, regulators <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/massachusetts-regulator-probes-roaring-kittys-gamestop-trades-2024-06-04/">began to eye</a> Gill&rsquo;s trading activity as suspicious. CoinGape reports that U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler has expressed specifically that Gill&rsquo;s trades could <a href="https://coingape.com/why-sec-is-unlikely-to-probe-roaring-kitty-as-he-exploits-loophole/">potentially be considered</a> market manipulation.&nbsp;



After the dust settled from the Roaring Kitty rally of May 2024, two things were abundantly clear: 1) Gill is one of the investing world&rsquo;s most powerful influencers and 2) if his followers aren&rsquo;t careful, his influence could cost them a lot of money.



<h2>The Rise of Dangerous Influencer Marketing&nbsp;</h2>



Keith Gill isn&rsquo;t the first person that comes to mind when you hear the term &ldquo;social media influencer&rdquo; and the combo of social media and the stock market is certainly a newer phenomena. But this is an evolving world. As social media platforms have exploded in popularity throughout the past decade, so has influencer marketing. People have found ways to build significant followings &mdash; even if sometimes that means posting content that goes viral unexpectedly, just as Gill did when he first began vlogging about his initial GME investment. Companies have replaced their television infomercials &mdash; long a staple of advertising &mdash; with social media partners who can reach millions with one post.&nbsp;



Integral to the impact of influencers is that they are not traditional celebrities. According to <a href="https://www.agilitypr.com/pr-news/public-relations/a-brief-history-of-influencer-marketing-and-2-trends-that-define-its-future/">recent studies</a>, &ldquo;92 percent of consumers prefer recommendations from people they know over traditional advertisements.&rdquo;&nbsp;Another 2024 study revealed that <a href="https://www.charleagency.com/articles/influencer-marketing-statistics/#:~:text=Over%2060%25%20of%20consumers%20trust,%241%20spent%20on%20influencer%20marketing.">more than 60%</a> of consumers trust influencer recommendations enough to let them impact their purchasing decisions.&nbsp;



However, the many people making purchases based on influencer content might be better served to look into what they are buying. In 2021, tobacco giant British American Tobacco (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bti-stock-quote/">BTI</a>) <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/feb/20/tobacco-giant-bets-1bn-on-social-media-influencers-to-boost-lung-friendlier-sales">began partnering</a> with social media influencers to promote Velo, a nicotine product known for its addictive tendencies. In 2022, BBC News also found that many U.K. influencers had been <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/health-60348334">promoting</a> tanning products that their country had banned due to <a href="https://www.onegreenplanet.org/lifestyle/watch-out-for-social-media-influencers-promoting-dangerous-tanning-products/">links to cancer</a>. Other influencers have been <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/11/ftc-warns-two-trade-associations-dozen-influencers-about-social-media-posts-promoting-consumption">accused</a> by the Federal Trade Commission&nbsp;of promoting the safety of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame without proper disclosures.&nbsp;



The trend of everyday people gaining profound influence over such large audiences likely helped pave the way for Gill. His down-to-earth persona and playful cat t-shirts were a stark contrast to the shiny suits and vests that have become the uniforms of Wall Street. And this image likely helped him resonate with people who saw Wall Street as the enemy, especially as Gill&rsquo;s investing mentality offered a way to strike back at the institutions of high finance.&nbsp;



How deeply did he resonate with investors? The subreddit forum r/WallStreetBets, where Gill first gained notoriety in 2020, had <a href="https://marketrebellion.com/news/trading-insights/the-degenerate-history-of-wall-street-bets/">reached 10 million</a> registered subscribers by May 2021, by which point the squeeze had mostly concluded. According to <a href="https://subredditstats.com/r/wallstreetbets">recent statistics</a>, that number is now closer to 15 million.&nbsp;



<h2>The Damage Done</h2>



Gill likely didn&rsquo;t start out with the goal of inspiring an entire generation of traders. He claims he first purchased GME call options in June 2019 and increased his position through 2020 because he saw GME stock as being undervalued. As he documented his journey through Reddit and YouTube, many amateur traders started buying shares and options themselves in what they saw as a quest to harm the Wall Street short sellers who were betting against the stock.&nbsp;



Intentionally or not, Roaring Kitty was peddling a dangerous product, however: Meme stocks. Amateur traders were watching a seemingly regular person make what looked like easy money while harming the financial institutions betting against it. It&rsquo;s easy to become enamored with a David and Goliath story, especially when it offers you a way to make some money yourself. The GME short squeeze was no exception.



In May 2024, Roaring Kitty&rsquo;s return to social media ignited another meme stock rally. The day after Gill&rsquo;s return post began trending, GME stock <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/13/gamestop-shares-roaring-kitty">skyrocketed 110%</a> in just a few hours while AMC rose 78%. Given how poorly both companies had performed during the year&rsquo;s first quarter, no one could ignore the fact that it had surged entirely on momentum generated by the single, cryptic X post.&nbsp;



Regardless of whether or not he meant to create such a movement, Gill is tied to the damage done in his wake. Most recently, that looks like the <a href="https://money.com/meme-stocks-gamestop-down-billions/#:~:text=In%20fact%2C%20the%20%2413.1%20billion,by%20stockholders%20%E2%80%94%20of%20%246.6%20billion">$13.1 billion in losses</a> reported by investors after GME stock came crashing down once the May rally had subsided. To illustrate further, that figure is &ldquo;nearly double GameStop&rsquo;s entire market capitalization.&rdquo;



This illustrates the easy money myth of meme stock investing. Easy money is only easy if you take the profits you&rsquo;ve made and walk away while you can. Many of those investors&rsquo; refusal to cash out when they had the opportunity to take profits proved extremely costly. The legions who were following Gill saw their GameStop investments as a means of leveling the playing field against Wall Street. &ldquo;If he&rsquo;s still in, I&rsquo;m not leaving,&rdquo;<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/msevli/if_hes_still_in_im_not_fucking_leaving/"> they cheered</a> in 2021.&nbsp;



This is not unlike what happened three years ago. Many Reddit threads feature stories from GameStop investors who <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueOffMyChest/comments/ld6jna/i_made_200k_from_gamestop_then_lost_it_all_and/">took significant losses</a> when they opted against selling. While this may not have been Gill&rsquo;s fault directly, he was well aware that these people were following his example. He rose to fame by documenting his bullish thesis on GME stock. But when he didn&rsquo;t highlight a clear exit strategy, some investors were left behind in the fantasy of harming Wall Street&rsquo;s short sellers. As GME stock tumbled after the 2021 short squeeze, The Washington Post reported that many traders <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/02/02/gamestop-stock-plunge-losers/">lost thousands of dollars</a> in as little as one trading day. The outlet recounted the woes of one college-aged r/WallStreetBets user:




&ldquo;Had he sold last week, he could have pocketed a typical American&rsquo;s annual salary. But as the stock has crumbled, he has turned to the forum for reassurance, posting a screenshot from his online-banking app showing the day&rsquo;s losses, totaling about $9,000.&rdquo;




The impact of the GameStop squeeze didn&rsquo;t end there. One anonymous trader recounted that they <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvnn3a/i-lost-dollar400000-almost-everything-i-had-on-a-single-robinhood-bet">lost almost $400,000</a> on an ill-fated trade buying Alibaba (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/baba-stock-quote/">BABA</a>) call options. &ldquo;The big tipping point was GameStop. It was just ridiculous, and I got greedy and had FOMO,&rdquo; the individual wrote. In this, we see exactly why Gill should be considered akin to an influencer marketer. He enjoyed extremely <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/reddit-trading-guru-keith-gill-looks-to-have-40-million-portfolio-after-his-gamestop-bet-11617301895">healthy profits</a> after cashing out of his original GameStop bet. In 2021, he shared a screenshot of his GameStop holdings, revealing &ldquo;$19 million in equity and $8.9 million in options&rdquo; as well as $11.9 million in cash. But, as noted, many of his followers took steep losses. Like the influencers who pushed harmful smoking or tanning products, Gill benefitted from limited oversight on his chosen platforms. He also catered to a vast audience with limited knowledge of the relevant industry &mdash; which was, in this case, investing. As I recently reported, many retail investors have <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/06/does-i-like-the-stock-mean-i-should-buy-it-not-necessarily/#:~:text=As%20it%20turns%20out%2C%20buying,to%20make%20prudent%20financial%20decisions.">admitted to making bets</a> on meme stocks without truly understanding the company&rsquo;s fundamentals or growth prospects. Actual financial experts have made it clear that that strategy is highly risky and inadvisable.



Even if he didn&rsquo;t start out with the goal of igniting a movement among retail investors, the impact of Gill&rsquo;s actions cannot be overstated. He had been working in the financial industry for years, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/massachusetts-fines-massmutual-475-mln-failing-supervise-roaring-kitty-other-2021-09-16/">holding a role</a> at MassMutual that centered around financial education. He even once held the designation of financial broker, although he <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/world/roaring-kitty-no-longer-has-financial-broker-license-filing-idUSKCN2AT3O8/">no longer held</a> this license as of March 2021. As someone with an actual understanding of financial analysis market metrics, he made a fortune betting on GameStop. At one point, his position in the stock <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/who-is-keith-gill-online-influencer-sending-gamestop-shares-soaring-again-2024-06-07/#:~:text=But%20after%20drawing%20congressional%20and,X%2C%20and%20Reddit%20lay%20dormant.">reached a value</a> of $48 million. In June 2024, the rally that bore his name <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/06/how-much-did-keith-gill-make-from-gamestop-gme-stock-this-weeks-staggering-figures/">almost took him</a> to billionaire status. But after achieving undeniable success, Gill stepped away and went silent as his admiring retail investors continued to make poor trading decisions &mdash; often quoting his <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/06/does-i-like-the-stock-mean-i-should-buy-it-not-necessarily/">now iconic phrase</a>, &ldquo;I like the stock,&rdquo; to justify their reckless meme stock trades. This mantra remains a battle cry among retail investors to this day.&nbsp;



<h2>What Comes Next?</h2>



Gill started his journey as a modern day folk hero, helping a group of regular people mount a rebellion against a much larger foe. But when we step back and take an in-depth look at his entire trajectory, it&rsquo;s clear that like other market influencers, Gill has proven his type of power cannot go unchecked. Regulatory action is necessary to ensure that retail investors are more protected from misinformation &mdash; either predatory or unintentional &mdash; that <a href="https://apnews.com/article/investment-scams-crypto-fraud-social-media-f9e053a6c555c25c90e5f7330607d90c">continues to trend</a> on social media



This could come in the form of more regulatory crackdowns regarding who can post financial content to social media. If someone&rsquo;s number of followers reflects a high degree of influence over others, for example, they should face more scrutiny.&nbsp;



Additionally, social media platforms have a responsibility to police the investing content that is posted to them. Reddit (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/rddt-stock-quote/">RDDT</a>) CEO Steve Huffman <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/18/reddit-ceo-steve-huffman-defends-platforms-role-in-gamestop-surge.html">credits his own user base</a> with ensuring that the investing advice on the platform is valuable, saying it &ldquo;has to be accepted by many thousands of people before getting [high levels of] visibility.&rdquo; But that doesn&rsquo;t mean the advice is good. That&rsquo;s where the need for further oversight from these platforms comes in. When I spoke to personal finance and legal expert Erika Kullberg about spotting a credible financial market influencer, she <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/12/social-media-star-erika-kullberg-shares-how-to-avoid-tiktok-scams-and-get-rich-the-right-way/">highlighted</a> the importance of avoiding making investments simply based on social media hearsay and groupthink mentality &mdash; exactly the trends that have led to ill-fated meme stock plays. Gill&rsquo;s resurgence has shown that it&rsquo;s time for regulators to focus more on weeding out the dangerous content that continues to trend across social media.&nbsp;



As I&rsquo;ve written before, it&rsquo;s unquestionably important for investors to conduct proper research and analysis before betting on a stock. That often means listening to experts. But identifying credible financial advice and smart insights can be difficult in today&rsquo;s unending flood of digital information. Scrutinizing influencers &mdash; and curbing the influence of snake oil salesmen &mdash; is necessary to protect investors from questionable-at-best advice.&nbsp;

Toxic Influencer Marketing: How Roaring Kitty Brought Social Media to the Stock Market

While investing in the best&nbsp;<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/blue-chip-stocks/" target="_blank">blue chip stocks</a>&nbsp;to anchor your portfolio is always a good idea, I am always looking to diversify. A good way to do that is to invest in lesser-known but quality stocks under $10.



Lower-priced stocks have the advantage of being affordable so that you can buy more shares with less money. It&rsquo;s much cheaper to buy 100 shares of a $5 stock than to buy the same number of shares of an equity that cost $100 or more, right?



And these lower-priced stocks still can outperform the market. While the risks are higher, the rewards can be substantial, offering a tempting opportunity for investors willing to take on some level of risk.

<h2>Faraday Future Intelligent Electric (FFIE)</h2>

The California company operates in the United States and China.



The company has gotten into some hot water with Nasdaq and its listing requirements because the stock is less than $1 &ndash; it has until Aug. 31 to get the stock price up &ndash; and for not always promptly filing financial reports. 



Those are red flags for sure, so already you know FFIE stock is a speculative play.



Although revenue in 2023 was only $800,000, it was the company&rsquo;s first year of revenue, as it&rsquo;s still very much a startup. Faraday delivered its first-ever vehicles in the third quarter of the year.



However, Faraday also has some interesting things in the works, as outlined in its <a href="https://investors.ff.com/news-releases/news-release-details/faraday-future-hosts-investor-community-day-and-highlights">July 20 Investor Day event</a>. Highlights included a look at the All-Ability aiHypercar, its user ecosystem, and the company&rsquo;s Auto Industry Bridge strategy.



The company raised the idea of launching a second, lower-priced automotive brand. &ldquo;A second brand could strike in the mass market with volume production, bringing everyone the &lsquo;AI car of the future&rsquo; and the &lsquo;AI car of the people&rsquo;. 



We are preparing to launch the Bridge and second brand strategies in a future event where we will share more details and our progress. We are hopeful to set sail together in the blue ocean market with potential partners,&rdquo;&nbsp;founder YT Jia said.



The company scheduled a July 31 shareholder vote that includes a proposal for a 1-for-40 reverse stock split to maintain its Nasdaq compliance. For now, FFIE stock gets a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.



<h2>SoundHound AI (SOUN)</h2>

SoundHound&rsquo;s platform is used by restaurants to <a href="https://investors.soundhound.com/news-releases/news-release-details/beef-o-bradys-rolls-out-soundhounds-advanced-voice-ai-ordering">automate food ordering</a>, reducing employee costs. Through its Dynamic Interaction platform, customers can verbally place complicated orders at a kiosk and pay without the intervention of an employee.



Another interesting use of SoundHound&rsquo;s platform is its employee training. Inexperienced workers can use SoundHound to ask questions about a process and SoundHound&rsquo;s AI will answer intelligently and walk the employee through the proper steps.



SoundHound also has a product that has a <a href="https://investors.soundhound.com/news-releases/news-release-details/soundhound-chat-ai-launches-peugeot-opel-and-vauxhall-vehicles">Chat AI product</a> &ndash; integrated with ChatGPT &ndash; that can manage navigation, advise about the weather or tell stories to bored children in the back seat.



I also like that SoundHound is shoring up its financial position. The company <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/soundhound-ai-announces-early-debt-130000956.html">announced</a> that it reached an agreement with lenders to repay $100 million in outstanding debt. Once that&rsquo;s done, SoundHound will have zero debt and a cash balance of $180 million.



<a href="https://investors.soundhound.com/news-releases/news-release-details/soundhound-ai-reports-73-q1-revenue-growth-116-million-first">Revenue in the first quarter</a>&nbsp;was $11.6 million, up 73% from a year ago. And with a subscription and booking backlog of $682 million, up 80% from just a year ago, I think SoundHound will start turning a profit soon.



SOUN stock gets a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.



<h2>Kazia Therapeutics (KZIA)</h2>

The company&rsquo;s lead program is paxalisib, which is currently in Phase 3 trials as a treatment for glioblastoma, which is an aggressive form of brain cancer. Paxalisib is also in Phase 2 trials as a treatment for childhood brain cancers, brain metastases, and non-Hodgkin&rsquo;s lymphoma.



The stock had massive gains this month when it announced <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/07/why-is-kazia-therapeutics-kzia-stock-up-300-today/">positive results</a> for paxalisib&rsquo;s glioblastoma trial. The company reported that patients who received paxalisib had a median overall survival period of 14.77 months, compared to 13.84 months for patients who did not receive the drug.



In a prespecified secondary analysis, the survival period for paxalisib patients was 15.54 months compared to 11.89 months for patients who did not take the drug.



Investing in biotech and pharma stocks can be very challenging because there&rsquo;s a lot of research &ndash; and a lot of expense &ndash; before a drug can even go to regulators for possible approval. But Kazia&rsquo;s work appears to be promising, and that&rsquo;s driving the momentum of KZIA stock right now.



Kazia stock is up 40% over the last month, and gets a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.



<h2>Koss (KOSS)</h2>

The company has been around for more than 60 years and came to renewed prominence in recent years as a popular meme stock. The meme factor makes Koss a volatile stock &ndash; shares jumped <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/07/koss-stock-alert-koss-surges-90-on-renewed-meme-interest/">90% earlier this month</a> on speculative short-seller interest.



Earnings for the company&rsquo;s fiscal third quarter (ending March 31) showed weakening performance. Sales of $2.6 million was down from $3.3 million in the same quarter a year ago. Profits of $841,000 were down from $1.3 million on a year-over-year basis.



Koss is purely a meme stock play and should be treated with a lot of caution. If the stock jumps again &ndash; and odds are that it will &ndash; it would be wise to take profits at the peak.



KOSS stock is up 171% this year and gets a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.



<h2>VivoPower International (VVPR)</h2>

The company is preparing for a <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/vivopower-announces-binding-heads-agreement-151900389.html">merger of its subsidiary</a>, Tembo E-LV, with Cactus Acquisition Corp. 1 Limited (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cctsw-stock-quote/">CCTSW</a>), a special purpose acquisition company in preparation for taking Tembo public. Tembo, which is an electric vehicle services company in the Netherlands. 



Following the merger, the new Tembo Group expects to be publicly traded on the Nasdaq exchange. The new company would have a valuation of $838 million, with VivoPower shareholders receiving 20% of the company.



Thus, VVPR stock is an interesting bet on EVs with heavy European exposure. VivoPower stock is up 37% this year and gets a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.



<h2>Soligenix (SNGX)</h2>

It currently has several drug candidates in advanced stages of trials, including a treatment for early-stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in Phase 3 testing.



Soligenix has other Phase 2 tests underway for psoriasis, oral mucositis, and pediatric Crohn&rsquo;s disease.



But it&rsquo;s the early-stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma trial that has investors excited. The stock jumped nearly 300% earlier this month &ndash; before giving some of those gains back &ndash; following a study testing HyBryte as a treatment). 



Six patients are enrolled in the yearlong study, with four of them completing at least 12 weeks of treatment. Of those, Soligenix says three patients already achieved treatment success, which is a 50% improvement in their cumulative mCAILS score compared to baseline. The fourth patient also saw improvement, the company said.



While this is a positive development, it&rsquo;s important to recognize that HyBryte is still a long way from making it to regulatory approval. But as a speculative play, SNGX stock has potential.



The stock is up 48% in the last month and has a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.



<h2>First Foundation (FFWM)</h2>

The bank has $13.6 billion in assets as well as $10.1 billion of loans, deposits of $10.6 billion and stockholder equity of $929 million.



It also just completed an <a href="https://investor.ff-inc.com/news/news-details/2024/First-Foundation-Inc.-Closes-228-Million-Equity-Investment-Anchored-by-Fortress-Investment-Group-Canyon-Partners-Strategic-Value-Bank-Partners-and-North-Reef-Capital/default.aspx">investment deal</a> with several investment firms, including Fortress Investment Group, Canyon Partners, Strategic Value Bank Partners and North Reef Capital that injected $228 million into the company. First Foundation issued 11.3 million shares of stock valued at $4.10 each as part of the transaction.



The company is reporting second-quarter earnings on July 25, with <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/07/why-is-first-foundation-ffwm-stock-down-27-today/">analysts expecting</a> flat adjusted earnings per share as well as revenue of $54.48 million. A year ago in the second quarter, FFWM saw $61.1 million in revenue and earnings of 7 cents per share.



Regional banking stocks have been challenging investments for the last few quarters, but FFWM appears to be on an upswing. The stock is up 25% in the last month and gets a &ldquo;B&rdquo; rating in the Portfolio Grader.
