Centrus Energy Corp is engaged in the supply of nuclear fuel and services for the nuclear power industry. It operates through the Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) and Technical Solutions segments. The LEU segment has two components which include the sale of separative work units and uranium. The Technical Solutions segment provides engineering, design, and manufacturing services to government and private sector customers. The majority of the firm's revenue is derived from the LEU segment. It has a business presence in the U.S. and other countries, of which prime revenue is generated in the U.S.

Centrus Energy shares are trading higher. In a special briefing involving policy makers and business leaders, Centrus has urged Congress to prioritize domestic production and lower foreign dependency after $3.4 billion was funded for nuclear fuel.

At&nbsp;a special briefing for policymakers on Capitol Hill today, Centrus said that the $3.4 billion that Congress has made available for domestic nuclear fuel production should be focused on deploying American uranium enrichment technology that is manufactured in the United States, by American workers, as opposed to foreign-origin centrifuge technologies that are manufactured overseas.&nbsp;

"The need to transition away from Russian nuclear fuel, coupled with a historic investment in U.S. nuclear fuel production approved by Congress, has created a once-in-a-generation opportunity to restore America's domestic supply chain for enriched uranium," said Amir Vexler, President and CEO of Centrus. "We should not be content to trade dependence on Russia for dependence on China, or Europe, or anywhere else. The time has come to invest in American enrichment technology, built by American workers, with an American supply chain."&nbsp;
Vexler was joined at the briefing by leaders of approximately 14 large and small businesses with work locations in 13 states, representing Centrus' nationwide supply chain. These American-owned companies and many others would provide critical components and other support to Centrus if the federal government decides to support deployment of Centrus' American Centrifuge technology, which is manufactured in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and operated in Piketon, Ohio.&nbsp;
Under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, Centrus has deployed a cascade of sixteen centrifuges at the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio, and is pioneering production of an advanced reactor fuel called High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU). Centrus' goal is to expand the capacity of the plant with thousands of additional centrifuges to accommodate large-scale production of Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) for existing reactors and HALEU for next generation reactors. This will require a public private partnership including robust federal investment alongside private capital and purchase agreements from customers.&nbsp;
Centrus is competing for federal funding under a series of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) issued by the U.S. Department of Energy. These RFPs are backed by more than $3.4 billion in Congressional appropriations that were approved as part of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 and the bipartisan government funding bill in March 2024.&nbsp;

U.S. stocks were lower, with the Dow Jones index falling around 200 points on Friday.
Shares of Constellation Energy Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CEG#NYSE">CEG</a>) rose sharply during Friday's session after the company announced it signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft that will help launch the Crance Clean Energy Center and restart<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CEG/news"> Three Mile Island Unit 1</a>.
Constellation Energy shares jumped 13.4% to $236.43 on Friday.

Shares of uranium stocks are trading higher, possibly as the US investigates if China is helping Russia circumnavigate the commodity's ban. Also, Russian President Putin last week reportedly considered restrictions on uranium exports.

Centrus Energy shares are trading higher after the company reported better-than-expected Q2 financial results.

Centrus Energy (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LEU#AMEX">LEU</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $1.89 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $0.74 by 155.41 percent. The company reported quarterly sales of $189.000 million which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $86.833 million by 117.66 percent. This is a 92.07 percent increase over sales of $98.400 million the same period last year.

The United States is set to invest up to $2.7 billion in domestically-supplied enriched uranium to bolster the supply chain for nuclear reactor fuel and reduce reliance on Russian imports. This initiative follows legislation signed by President Joe Biden in May, which also banned imports of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/05/38623605/us-lawmakers-vote-to-ban-russian-uranium-in-win-for-north-american-miners">enriched uranium from Russia</a>.
Previously, Russia supplied about 24% of the enriched uranium for U.S. reactors, with significant contributions also coming from Germany (12%) and the UK (11%). This reliance on foreign sources posed a strategic risk, particularly given the current geopolitical climate. To address this, the Department of Energy (DOE) has launched an initiative to increase domestic production, which previously accounted for 27%.
&#8220;The DOE is actively working to jumpstart domestic uranium enrichment capacity,&#8221; <a href="https://www.energy.gov/articles/doe-announces-27-billion-president-bidens-investing-america-agenda-boost-domestic-nuclear">stated</a> US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. &#8220;This initiative is crucial for strengthening our national security and fostering growth within the domestic nuclear industry.&#8221;

The DOE intends to award multiple, 10-year contracts to qualified suppliers of enriched uranium. Proposals are due by Aug. 26. Potential sources could encompass entirely new enrichment facilities or projects focused on expanding existing infrastructure. This program is expected to benefit U.S.-based nuclear fuel suppliers like Maryland-based Centrus Energy Corp (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LEU#AMEX">LEU</a>) and Urenco Group &#8211; a UK-based consortium with a significant presence in New Mexico.
Developing a robust domestic uranium enrichment capability serves several critical purposes. Primarily, it safeguards a reliable and secure fuel supply for the existing fleet of U.S. nuclear reactors, a vital source of clean energy.
Additionally, it establishes a foundation for future deployments of advanced nuclear technologies, which are essential for achieving the nation&#8217;s ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
Assistant to the President and National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi noted, &#8220;Today's announcement is exactly the kind of investment we need to further build and protect our nuclear energy supply and deliver the clean, affordable, reliable energy that our communities and industries are demanding.&#8221;
The Biden administration views this initiative as a cornerstone for a cleaner energy future, free from dependence on foreign sources, particularly those with a history of geopolitical aggression.
