Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) is one of several companies benefitting from demand for weight loss drugs. The company is also seeing competition in the market including knockoff drugs that it said <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/08/40376247/dont-promote-copycat-weight-loss-drugs-amid-improved-supply-eli-lilly-asks-doctors-fda-evaluates">could be unsafe</a>.
What Happened: A recent report says Eli Lilly is seeking medical records of people who took knockoff <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/weight-loss">weight loss drugs.</a>
The request, reported by <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-19/lilly-wants-records-from-people-who-took-weight-loss-knockoffs?sref=TBDibEcD">Bloomberg</a>, is being done for safety reasons according to the pharmaceutical company.
Eli Lilly is building a case against businesses that are selling knockoffs of the company's Zepbound and Monjaro. Compounding pharmacies have been capitalizing on Lilly seeing supply constraints and shortages while demand remains high.
Lilly has said that the quality of the compounding pharmacies products are inferior and questions the safety profile of the treatment.
A letter viewed by Bloomberg requested information from a patient who took a Lilly product from a compounded pharmacy.
"We would appreciate if you could complete the enclosed form and sign the Authorization for Release of Medical Information so that we can obtain more details from the treating physician around your experience," the letter says.
Along with items like the letter, Eli Lilly also took out an advertisement in national publications encouraging patients to make sure they are taking the "real product."

Why It's Important: Obtaining medical records could be a key in Eli Lilly's battle against compounding pharmacies. The short supply of Lilly and other companies' weight loss drugs helped the argument for a legal loophole that allows compounding of drugs when a supply constraint happens.
If Eli Lilly can prove that the drugs are not as safe and are causing side effects or harm to patients, it could help put a stop to compounding pharmacies. Without proof, Eli Lilly may fall victim to the legal loophole and the issue of soaring demand for its own products.
Eli Lilly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/08/40251130/mounjaro-maker-eli-lillys-bumper-q2-earnings-exceeds-estimates-hikes-outlook-again-on-strong-diab">reported second-quarter </a>revenue of $11.3 billion, up 36% year-over-year. Mounjaro and Zepbound had revenue of $3.1 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, seeing significant gains in the quarter.
The pharmaceutical company increased its full-year guidance as a result of the second-quarter results and increasing demand for several products.
LLY Price Action: Eli Lilly stock closed Wednesday at $924.56 versus a 52-week trading range of $516.57 to $972.53. Eli Lilly stock is up 56% year-to-date in 2024.

A study compared the association of semaglutide vs other antidiabetic medications and other GLP-1RAs, including liraglutide and dulaglutide, with opioid overdose risk in patients with comorbid type 2 diabetes (T2D) and opioid use disorder (OUD).

Drug overdose <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2824054?guestAccessKey=67ec89b0-a682-4fbf-97d9-1c0054b62d04&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=092524" rel="noreferrer noopener">deaths</a> in the U.S. remain alarmingly high, with an estimated 107,543 fatalities in 2023, primarily due to opioids.
Despite the proven effectiveness of medications for opioid use disorder (OUD) in reducing overdose risk, only about 25% of individuals with OUD receive treatment, and nearly half discontinue it within six months. This highlights the urgent need for alternative OUD therapies.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, have been shown to modulate dopamine reward pathways and reduce drug rewards, including heroin, in animal studies.
Additionally, anecdotal reports and studies have suggested that semaglutide may reduce drug cravings and offer therapeutic benefits in alcohol and nicotine use disorders.
These findings prompted an investigation into whether semaglutide could potentially help prevent overdoses in OUD patients.
Semaglutide was associated with a significantly lower risk of opioid overdose during a 1-year follow-up compared with other antidiabetic medications, including other GLP-1RAs, with HRs ranging from 0.32 to 0.58. 
The negative control outcome showed no difference between groups. The update signals a potential new use for the blockbuster diabetes medications.
The researchers noted that results need validation from other data resources and study populations. Further research is warranted to investigate the underlying mechanisms, and randomized clinical trials are necessary to corroborate the clinical effects on OUD.
The study utilized six years of data (between December 2017 and June 2023) from over 33,006 patients.
Earlier this year, a comprehensive U.S. study revealed that the use of&nbsp;Ozempic and Wegovy is not associated with an increased&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/01/36509636/novo-nordisks-ozempic-and-wegovy-helps-lose-weight-not-ones-mind-us-study-find-no-increased-suici" rel="noreferrer noopener">risk of suicidal thoughts</a>.
Price Action: NVO stock is up 1.16% at $126.90, and LLY stock is down 0.05% at $924.01 at the last check on Wednesday.

Popular Ozempic May Have New Use As Semaglutide Drugs Linked To Reduced Overdose Risk In Diabetic Opioid Users

A new study has found that people with a history of opioid abuse who took Novo Nordisk&#8216;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/ozempic">Ozempic</a> weight loss drug were significantly less likely to overdose, adding to growing evidence suggesting that the drug, primarily used for diabetes and weight loss, could help manage <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/addiction">drug addiction</a>.
According to the <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.35247?guestAccessKey=67ec89b0-a682-4fbf-97d9-1c0054b62d04&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=092524" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>&nbsp;published Wednesday in JAMA Network Open, patients on semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and the weight-loss drug <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/wegovy">Wegovy</a>, were less than half as likely to overdose compared to those on insulin. People taking semaglutide were 63% less likely to overdose than individuals on DPP-4 inhibitors, another common class of diabetes medication.
Rong Xu, professor of biomedical informatics at Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University, led the research, which had previously linked semaglutide to reductions in alcohol use disorder and smoking. This is the first large-scale study to evaluate opioid overdoses. 
The reduced risk associated with semaglutide persisted across most diabetes treatments, except for Eli Lilly and Co.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) Trulicity, according to the study, which was first <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-25/novo-s-ozempic-reduced-opioid-overdose-risk-research-shows?srnd=phx-latest&amp;sref=TBDibEcD&amp;leadSource=uverify%20wall">reported</a> by Bloomberg.

Why It Matters: Drug overdose deaths are at historically high levels in the U.S. 
Over 108,000 people died from an overdose in 2022, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">according to provisional data</a> released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the one-year period ending in January 2024, there were over 76,922 fatal drug overdoses.
These overdose deaths are only part of the severity of the problem. 
&#8220;That overdose number is only looking at overdoses. It&#8217;s not looking at the person who dies of bacterial endocarditis related to their drug and alcohol use,&#8221; <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/05/31/us-addiction-crisis-drug-use-disorder-mental-illness">said</a> Cara Poland, an addiction medicine doctor at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, per Axios.

Eli Lilly Unusual Options Activity

In an investor update on Tuesday,&nbsp;Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMGN#NASDAQ">AMGN</a>) released data from Phase 3 trials of rocatinlimab and Uplizna (inebilizumab).
HORIZON Phase 3 trial evaluated rocatinlimab for atopic dermatitis (eczema) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/41022603/amgens-rocatinlimab-data-beats-placebo-in-atopic-dermatitis-trial-but-analyst-says-" rel="noreferrer noopener">in 726 patients</a>.
Amgen&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://investors.amgen.com/static-files/a7119a35-06de-497e-ba75-146404c54d95" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> that rocatinlimab outperformed a placebo regarding the severity and extent of the disease.
Amgen stock is trading lower as the data seemed to be below expectations.
Goldman Sachs notes that although the Phase 3 efficacy data for rocatinlimab is less compelling compared to Dupixent, the analyst still sees strong commercial potential for the drug (if approved).

Johnson &amp; Johnson&nbsp;(NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/jnj#NYSE">JNJ</a>), via its subsidiary called Red River Talc, for the third time, filed for voluntary bankruptcy to resolve thousands of lawsuits related to its talc products. Red River Talc has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to equitably resolve all of JNJ&#39;s present and future talc-related claims in a bankruptcy court in the Southern District of Texas.

Johnson &amp; Johnson&#39;s subsidiary, LTL Management, which was established to manage claims in the cosmetic talc litigation, filed for voluntary bankruptcy twice in New Jersey. Red River also increased its settlement commitment by $1.75 billion to approximately $8 billion.
<h2>Several Rulings Against JNJ in Talc Lawsuits</h2>
Several juries have ruled against Johnson &amp; Johnson in talc lawsuits over the years. In one such ruling, in 2018, JNJ was ordered by a Missouri court to pay $4.7 billion in damages to 22 women who made such allegations, affirming a St. Louis court jury&#39;s verdict given earlier. Though the verdict was reduced to $2.1 billion by an appeals court in June 2020, it still rejected J&amp;J&#39;s appeal to overturn the 2018 jury verdict. JJohnson &amp; Johnson paid the award, which, including interest, totaled approximately $2.5 billion. In April 2023, J&amp;J offered to pay $8.9 billion over a period of 25 years to completely resolve its cosmetic talc litigation.
JNJ believes that resolving the claims via the civil law system would take years and incur significant costs for the company. The talc lawsuits have also hurt the company&#39;s goodwill and reputation. It believes that resolving the litigation through this proposed reorganization plan would be more efficient and would compensate claimants on time. &nbsp;However, some attorneys of the claimants feel Johnson &amp; Johnson is manipulating the bankruptcy process so that it can delay jury trials and also underpay the claimants. However, the higher settlement offer and a high percentage of claimant support may improve JNJ&#39;s chances of success after the previous two failures.

In the overall population, the response to treatment was also statistically significant using the iADRS at 22%. Among the two groups analyzed, participants treated with Kisunla had up to a 39% lower risk of progressing to the next clinical stage of disease than those taking a placebo.
Among the overall population of participants, Kisunla reduced amyloid plaques on average by 61% at six months, 80% at 12 months, and 84% at 18 months compared to the start of the study.
In the TRAILBLAZER-ALZ 2 study, 66% of patients achieved plaque clearance at one year.
Kisunla can cause amyloid-related imaging abnormalities, which is a potential side effect with amyloid plaque-targeting therapies.
