On Wednesday, Levi Strauss &amp; Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/levi#NYSE">LEVI</a>) issued a mixed quarterly report. While the iconic denim brand is doing great as far as its&nbsp;namesake brand and Beyond Yoga&nbsp;are concerned, but its Dockers business is another story, one that Levi is thinking to sell. On a brighter note, by focusing on direct selling and turning away from wholesellers like Macy&rsquo;s Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/m#NYSE">M</a>), aided by&nbsp;lower cotton costs, Levi grew its gross margin.
<h3>Fiscal Third Quarter Highlights</h3>
During the quarter ended on August 25th, Levi reported sales grew 5%, which is the biggest increase in two years. However, overall revenue was flat at $1.52 billion and below LSEG&rsquo;s consensus estimate of&nbsp;$1.55 billion. The Dockers brand reported sales contracted by as much as 15% as they brought in $73.7 million. On the other hand, Beyond Yoga reported 19% growth as sales grew to $32.2 million.
With lower cotton costs and without any need to mark down its products to sell them like Macy&rsquo;s and its magical sales, Levi grew its gross margin by 4.4 percentage points thanks to its direct selling strategy with which it is less reliant on wholesalers like Macy&rsquo;s. Once &lsquo;the world&rsquo;s greatest department&rsquo; store, long gone are the days when Macy&rsquo;s enjoyed margins that Levi is now taking for itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fueled by strength in the U.S., the direct channel went up about 10%, with e-commerce alone growing even 16%. Direct sales made 44% of Levi&rsquo;s total revenue and the denim maker aims to push its contribution to 55%.
Net income amounted to $20.7 million or 5 cents per share, with adjusted earnings amounting to 33 cents, surpassing LSEG&rsquo;s consensus estimate of 31 cents.

Levi is counting on denim-loving consumers. During the latest reported quarter, financials were brought down by the Dockers brand as well as challenges in China and Mexico, causing Levi to miss Wall Street estimates for revenue and having to trim its revenue guidance. With Beyonce&rsquo;s support with the official ad campaign having launched on Monday, Levi hopes to fuel growth in the women&rsquo;s&rsquo; department over the long-haul.&nbsp;CEO Michelle Gass&nbsp;spoke confidently of this opportunity as the denim maker&nbsp;sees it growing to at least half of its business, doubling over time and even $2 billion just this year. But,&nbsp;for the latest quarter,&nbsp;missing Wall Street&rsquo;s expectations for revenue and trimming its revenue guidance&nbsp;as it now sees revenue growing 1%, while it previously guided for growth between 1% and 3%. But, with one more quarter to go in the fiscal year, Levi did reaffirm its full-year guidance for adjusted earnings per share that are expected between $1.17 and $1.27. By selling Dockers, Levi believes that both Dockers and Levi&rsquo;s will be empowered to maximize their own&nbsp;values&nbsp;as independent units.&nbsp;

A month has gone by since the last earnings report for Macy&#39;s (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/m#NYSE">M</a>). Shares have added about 1.1% in that time frame, underperforming the S&amp;P 500.

The merchandise margin increased 210 basis points primarily due to reduced year-over-year discounting, favorable inventory shortages resulting from the company&#39;s asset protection efforts and M&#39;s transition to cost accounting.
Delivery expenses as a percentage of net sales improved year over year by 30 basis points, driven by lower shipped sales volumes and enhanced delivery expense management, reflecting cost-saving measures and process re-engineering initiatives.
The company reported selling, general and administrative (SG&amp;A) expenses of $1.97 billion, down 0.4% from $1.98 billion in the year-ago period. As a percentage of net sales, SG&amp;A expenses increased 140 basis points year over year to 40% on lower net sales.

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed an improvement in the overall market sentiment, but the index remained in the &#8220;Neutral&#8221; zone on Wednesday.
U.S. stocks settled higher on Wednesday following the release of the Federal Reserve's minutes from the recent policy meeting.
Minutes from the July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting have further solidified <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/08/40492530/fed-minutes-reveal-plausible-case-for-interest-rate-cut-as-policymakers-cheer-inflation-progress">investors' expectations</a> for a rate cut at the upcoming September meeting, as policymakers highlighted continued progress in disinflation.
On the economic data front, mortgage applications in the U.S. declined by 10.1% from the prior week in the week ending Aug. 16.
Shares of Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/M#NYSE">M</a>) fell around 13% on Wednesday following weak quarterly sales. Target Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results and raised its FY24 EPS outlook.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with consumer discretionary, materials, and utilities stocks recording the biggest gains on Wednesday. However, financials and energy stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 55 points to 40,890.49 on Wednesday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.42% to 5,620.85, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.57% at 17,918.99 during Wednesday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from BJ&#8217;s Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BJ#NYSE">BJ</a>), Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WSM#NYSE">WSM</a>), and Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTU#NASDAQ">INTU</a>) today.
What is CNN Business Fear &amp; Greed Index?
At a current reading of 50.5, the index remained in the &#8220;Neutral&#8221; zone on Wednesday, versus a prior reading of 47.3.
The Fear &amp; Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greediness.

S&P 500, Nasdaq Surge After Fed Minutes Point To Likely Rate Cut In September: Fear & Greed Index Remains In 'Neutral' Zone

As the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">earnings season</a> unfolds, more businesses are sharing perspectives on consumer trends. 
According to a Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2024-07-16/us-consumer-health-is-fine-shoppers-are-just-getting-pickier?sref=TBDibEcD">analysis</a>, retailers are frustrated over the lack of spending on the part of shoppers. And yet, retail sales soared by 1%<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/08/40393687/retail-sales-soar-in-july-weekly-jobless-claims-undercut-expectations-traders-lea"> month-over-month in July</a>.
The sharp rebound from stagnation in June surprised economists who expected an uptick of just 0.3%. The data also threw off analysts who expected consumers to pull back on spending <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/inflation">due to stubborn inflation</a>.
Turns out, consumers are spending &#8212; they&#8217;re just picky <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/retail">about where they shop</a>. 
For example, spending intentions for leisure and housing are on the rise, according <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/insights/economy/consumer-pulse/state-of-the-us-consumer.html">to</a> Deloitte. Sectors like clothing, however, are experiencing low intention levels compared to 2021.
"Consumer spending has been muted this year due to volatile goods spending, with overall spending going up by only 0.3% since year-end 2023," said the report.
The University of Michigan&#8217;s monthly consumer sentiment index proclaimed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/39750466/us-consumer-morale-dips-more-than-expected-in-july-sentiment-remains-stubbornly-subdued">July as the worst month</a> for consumers since November 2023. However,<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/08/40419637/us-consumer-confidence-rebounds-in-august-expectations-are-subject-to-change-as-presidential-campaig"> sentiment picked up in August</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Companies Are Saying </h2>
Home Depot Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HD#NYSE">HD</a>) felt the sting of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/08/40381559/home-depot-ceo-says-inflation-keeps-eating-away-at-disposable-income-are-home-repairs-being-put-off">homeowners holding off on renovations until interest rates come down</a>. The company&#8217;s second-quarter comparable sales decreased 3.3%, with U.S. comparable sales down 3.6%, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40334855/home-depot-q2-earnings-customer-transactions-decline-cites-weaker-home-improvement-spending-but-rai">reflecting weaker consumer demand</a>.
Macy&#8217;s Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/M#NYSE">M</a>) also saw consumers turning away from more expensive items. Second-quarter sales hovered at around $4.94 billion — down 3.8% year over year.
Macy&#8217;s CEO Tony Spring <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/21/macys-m-q2-2024-earnings.html">told</a> CNBC that "a softness, a carefulness, a delay in the conversion of purchasing&#8221; are to blame.
&#8220;Even the affluent consumer is not spending like they were a year ago,&#8221; he added.
Macy&#8217;s released mixed second-quarter results that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40484046">missed analyst consensus and forced it to lower its guidance</a>. 
Other retailers had better luck. 
TJX Companies Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TJX#NYSE">TJX</a>) shares jumped by over 6% on Wednesday. The company, which owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Sierra, among other brands, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40484279/tjx-companies-q2-earnings-strong-sales-higher-margins-invests-in-dubais-brands-for-less">posted a 4% increase in store sales</a>. 
The jump in sales was driven entirely by a net rise in customer transactions, said the company, which was surprised by the results and raised its guidance for next year. 
A sales uptick for TJX might mean consumers are choosing to direct their discretionary spending toward discount prices found in stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls.
An earnings report from Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ROST#NASDAQ">ROST</a>), scheduled for Thursday, might confirm the trend. Analysts from Zachs expect the company to post revenues of $5.25 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of 6.3%.
Strong quarterly results from Walmart Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) took shares 9% higher after the company's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40391777/walmart-q2-earnings-e-commerce-and-advertising-businesses-fuel-revenue-and-profit-beat-hikes-annual">earnings results were posted Thursday</a>. 
Sales for the quarter totaled $169.34 billion, up 4.8% year-over-year, beating expectations and pushing the company to raise its guidance.
"So far, we aren&#8217;t experiencing a weaker consumer overall," said CEO C. Douglas McMillon. The retail exec also reported a deflationary trend in its U.S. store prices. Walmart shares <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40486532">rose on Wednesday</a> in response to positive results from 
Walmart CFO John David Rainey said: &#8220;Everyone is looking for some piece of information that maybe indicates further weakness with our members and our customers, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40446780">we&#8217;re not seeing it</a>.&#8221; 
Rainey said his company is not immune to the volatility of the day, especially when considering the geopolitical backdrop. &#8220;Other economic data out there, as well as the state of affairs globally, would suggest that it&#8217;s prudent to remain appropriately cautious,&#8221; he said. 
Target Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) sales <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/08/40482203/target-q2-earnings-revenue-and-profit-beat-digital-sales-boost-annual-profit-outlook-hiked">were up by 2.7% and also beat market expectations</a>. CEO Brian Cornell noted improving trends across discretionary categories, most notably in apparel and beauty products.
Consumers have shown remarkable resilience in the face of multiple challenges over the last several years, and they remain resilient today, he said, adding:&nbsp;"Given the significant headwinds they faced with inflation over the last few years, consumers continue to focus on value as they work hard to manage their household budgets.&#8221;
Chief Commercial Officer Rick Gomez said that while economic data remains mixed, American families continue to deal with a lot but are still "willing and able to spend."&nbsp;
"Yes, they&#8217;re still being choiceful. Yes, they&#8217;re budget conscious. And yes, they&#8217;re hunting for deals and everyday value. But they&#8217;re also willing to shop when they find that right combination of fashion and newness at the right price. This was on full display in our second quarter results," said Gomez.

TJX reported second-quarter earnings per share of 96 cents (+13%), beating the analyst consensus of 91 cents. Quarterly sales of $13.468 billion (+6%) outpaced the street view of $13.307 billion.

The annual inflation rate in the Eurozone increased to 2.6% in July from 2.5% in the prior month, while current account surplus rose to €52.4 billion in June from €32.4 billion a year ago. Italy&#8217;s current account surplus widened to EUR 4,885 billion in June from EUR 1,248 billion in the year-ago period. Producer prices in Germany fell by 0.8% year-over-year in July.
Asia Pacific Markets
Asian markets closed mostly lower on Wednesday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 falling 0.29%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index falling 0.69%, China's Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.35% and India's BSE Sensex rising 0.13%.
The annual inflation rate in Hong Kong increased to 2.5% in July from 1.5% in the prior month. The People&#8217;s Bank of China kept key lending rates unchanged at the recent fixing.
