Gold miners&#8217; stocks, 2025&#8217;s standout performers, faced a sharp reversal this week as investor appetite for safe havens cooled following the U.S.-China trade truce, raising fresh doubts about the sustainability of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/gold-miners"> the sector&#8217;s explosive rally.</a>
The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDX#NYSE">GDX</a>)—a widely tracked proxy for gold mining stocks—plunged 9.6% over three sessions, marking its worst three-day performance since April 2022. 
The move was amplified by a 4.4% drop in gold prices, which now sit 9.2% below the all-time high of $3,500 per ounce reached on April 22.
Losses were broad-based within the GDX components. Newmont Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), its largest holding, dropped 10% in just three days. Similar losses were recorded in Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) and Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. Technical analysts are growing cautious. Bank of America technical analyst, Paul Ciana said the daily gold chart is showing signs of a potential double top pattern. 
He indicated that a close below $3,200 per ounce would increase the risk of a correction to the $2,900–$3,000 range during the second quarter.
From a fundamental view, David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation, observed that gold is consolidating around the lower end of its recent range. 
He flagged $3,200 as the first key support level. "It looks as if the path of least resistance may be down for gold, although much now depends on how staunchly the bulls can defend the $3,200 level," he said.
Nikos Tzabouras, senior market analyst at Tradu.com, said the trade truce buoyed market sentiment and reduced near-term demand for havens like gold. 
"Gold remains under pressure, with scope for further declines as risk appetite holds firm," he said, while cautioning that geopolitical uncertainty and central bank buying still support the longer-term case.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Seasonality Enters Choppy Phase</h3>
Seasonal trends may also be at play. Historically, gold posts strong gains in the first four months of the year, followed by a choppy stretch between mid-May and mid-July. In that two-month window, bullion has delivered positive returns just 42% of the time over the past decade.
This seasonal lull could compound downside pressure, especially if key support levels fail to hold.

While gold miners have delivered strong year-to-date returns – with the GDX ETF up 30% through mid May.

Gold Miners Slammed By US-China Trade Truce: Is It Time To Take Profit?

Shares of precious metals stocks are trading lower as gold and silver drop after the US and China agreed to a temporary reduction in most tariffs on each other's goods. This could be driving a rotation out of safe-haven assets.

The United States and China agreed to slash their retaliatory tariffs by over 100 percentage points, pausing a spiraling trade war that had threatened<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s"> to choke global growth.</a>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's In The Deal?</h3>
The agreement establishes a 90-day reset, slashing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, and Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, starting May 14. 
The decision stems from high-level negotiations in Geneva, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China's Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The truce halts one of the steepest protectionist escalations in recent history, following President Donald Trump's aggressive "Liberation Day" trade tariffs launched on April 2.
"We reached an agreement on a 90-day pause and substantially moved down the tariff levels," Bessent said in a press conference. 
"Both countries represented their national interests very well, but we concluded we have shared interest in balanced trade."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Truce Cools Recession And Inflation Risks</h3>
The tariff rollback offers more than diplomatic relief — it also addresses growing fears of a U.S. economic slowdown and resurgent inflation. By averting the triple-digit import taxes that threatened to choke global trade, the deal removes a significant source of economic uncertainty that had weighed on business investment and consumer confidence.
Recession probabilities have sharply declined in response. 
The latest market-based forecast from Kalshi shows a 46% chance of a U.S. recession this year, down from 60% at the end of April, reflecting improving sentiment. Notably, consumer spending and corporate earnings had begun showing early signs of strain under the tariff shock imposed in April.
On the inflation front, the agreement is expected to ease price pressures on goods most impacted by the trade war — including electronics, automotive parts and industrial equipment.
Ahead of Tuesday's official April Consumer Price Index report, economists expect a return to monthly inflation growth: headline prices are forecast to rise 0.3%, reversing March's 0.1% dip. Core inflation is also expected to rise 0.3%, while annual inflation rates are seen holding steady at 2.4% for headline and 2.8% for core.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Markets Cheered</h3>
U.S. equity futures soared as the news hit, with futures on the S&amp;P 500 climbing 3.13% to 5,836.66, those on the Nasdaq 100 jumping 4.05%, and Dow futures up 2.62%. 
The U.S. dollar index – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – surged 1.4%, with the greenback rallying 2% against the Japanese yen. 
Meanwhile, 2-year Treasury yields rose 10 basis points to 4%, as traders dialed back expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve rate cut. The odds of a June cut fell to 11%, down from 25% a week ago, per CME FedWatch.
Gold – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – dropped 2.9%, with investors rotating out of safe havens, and oil climbed 3.9% to $63.40 amid improving global demand prospects.

U.S. equities rallied sharply as investors welcomed the truce between Washington and Beijing. 
Trade-sensitive and consumer-facing stocks led the premarket advance, reflecting relief over lower input costs and reduced supply chain disruption. Technology and industrials also posted notable gains.

Wall Street Rally Extends Into Third Day: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), the world's largest publicly listed gold producer, reported robust first-quarter 2025 earnings following the conclusion of the year-long <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44861734/newmont-completes-a-year-long-portfolio-optimization-process" rel="noreferrer noopener">portfolio optimization effort</a>.
The company posted a net income of $1.9 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $2.6 billion, significantly surpassing the prior year's performance. Adjusted net income was $1.25 per share, aligning with analysts' expectations. Cost-wise, the company saw Gold All-In Sustaining Costs rise to $1,651 per ounce, a 13% increase due to lower production volumes and higher royalty costs.
"Following on from a robust fourth quarter performance, Newmont has delivered 1.5 million attributable gold ounces and generated a record first quarter free cash flow of $1.2 billion, demonstrating the strength of our unrivaled Tier 1 Portfolio," <a target="_blank" href="https://newmont.com/investors/news-release/news-details/2025/Newmont-Reports-First-Quarter-2025-Results/default.aspx" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Tom Palmer, Newmont's President and CEO.
Newmont's average realized gold price soared to $2,944 per ounce, driven by favorable market conditions and a $64 per ounce mark-to-market uplift on provisionally priced sales. Attributable gold production fell 19% quarter-to-quarter, reaching 1.54 million ounces, largely due to the divestiture of non-core operations like Musselwhite and Éléonore and planned mine sequencing at Boddington and Tanami.
The year-long portfolio optimization process saw the firm shed non-core assets following a $16.8 billion acquisition of Newcrest. Out of the $4.3 billion divesture program, the company received over $2.5 billion in after-tax proceeds from asset sales finalized in Q1, helping reduce debt by $1 billion and supporting capital returns, including $755 million in share repurchases and a $0.25 dividend.
Despite the drop in production, Newmont reaffirmed its full-year 2025 guidance of 5.9 million ounces of gold, with 52% of output expected in the second half. This seasonal skew is attributed to stronger contributions anticipated from Nevada Gold Mines and Pueblo Viejo, as well as the ramp-up of Ahafo North. Current quarter results, with 24% of expected annual Tier 1 production, align with this outlook.
Addressing a question on the current state of the market, Palmer noted that after completing an ambitious investment program over the last 12 months, the management is focused on delivering quality, irrespective of gold price volatility.
"We've got unit costs that are higher where they should be for a portfolio than the quality of the one we've assembled. So, we are very, very focused on delivering the safety, cost, and productivity performance that this portfolio deserves irrespective of the gold price," he explained.
Price Watch: Newmont is up 38.5% year-to-date. At the time of publication, the stock was up 2.67% in pre-market, trading at $54.57.
