Goldman Sachs economists have sounded the alarm on the U.S. economy, launching what they termed a &#8220;countdown to recession&#8221; as Donald Trump's aggressive tariff policy derails economic forecasts.
In a note shared Monday, the Goldman Sachs economic team led by Jan Hatzius downgraded its U.S. gross domestic product forecast for year-end 2025 to just 0.5% year-over-year, down from 1.7% previously. 
The downgrade follows a combination of shocks, including higher tariffs announced by the Trump administration, tightening financial conditions and rising geopolitical friction, that the bank says are disproportionately affecting lower-income Americans and threatening to derail the U.S. economy.
Traders on CFTC-regulated betting platform Kalshi currently price in a 66% chance of a U.S. recession this year, up from 40% last week.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trade War Reloaded? What's Behind The Rising Recession Call</h3>
Goldman Sachs said its baseline scenario still assumes some moderation in tariff implementation. Still, if most of the April 9 tariffs are enacted as planned, the effective U.S. tariff rate could surge by 20 percentage points.
"Our forecast had already assumed forceful retaliation by foreign governments, but we had not accounted for the effects of a consumer-led response," the team said, pointing to anticipated foreign consumer boycotts and reduced tourism flows to the United States, which alone could shave 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points off 2025 GDP.
Additionally, uncertainty around trade policy is compounding the issue. "Much of the very recent rise in uncertainty was related to President Trump's ‘reciprocal' tariff plan," Goldman said, adding that despite having more details, ambiguity around international responses and the scope of future tariff increases remains high.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Investment And Hiring Set To Stall</h3>
Business investment, a key driver of economic growth, is now expected to flatline over the next 12 months. According to Goldman Sachs' models, there is now a 45% probability that capital expenditures will decline during that period.
The economic team also sees looming pressure on federal, state and local government spending, especially in sectors like healthcare, education and infrastructure, which is amplifying the drag on the economy.
"We now expect roughly flat business investment over the next year," Goldman said, noting that tightening financial conditions and tariff-driven uncertainty discourage companies from expanding or hiring.
Consumer spending, which makes up about 70% of the U.S. economy, is also under threat. As labor supply growth slows and job creation weakens, Goldman expects a meaningful deceleration in household consumption.
"Tariffs reduce real disposable income," the bank said, implying that higher prices for imported goods will weigh on consumer purchasing power, especially among lower-income households.
The combination of weaker hiring, stagnant investment and declining consumer confidence creates a toxic mix for growth, one that might push the economy into contraction territory if shocks continue to build.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Recession Risk Spurs Hedging Shift</h3>
The rise in recession probability is not just a warning signal — it&#8217;s a tactical call for investors to rethink their hedging strategies. 
Goldman Sachs analyst Karen Reichgott Fishman said the combination of diminishing U.S. economic exceptionalism and increased risk of recession supports a strategic move into safe-haven currencies.
"The loss of U.S. exceptionalism and higher recession risk argue for a shift in hedging strategy," Fishman said. "We think U.S. investors should be better off adding JPY, CHF, and even EUR exposure as protection."
Since last week&#8217;s tariff announcement, the Invesco CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXY#NYSE">FXY</a>) has risen by 3%, while the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) fell 13%.

Shares of Mesa Air Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MESA#NASDAQ">MESA</a>) are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket">skyrocketing in premarket </a>on Monday after the merger agreement with Republic Airways Holdings Inc in an all-stock deal to create a major player in the regional airline market.
The combined company will be named Republic Airways Holdings Inc. The transaction is expected to close later in 2025.
The company will remain listed on the NASDAQ under the new RJET ticker.
Once finalized, Republic shareholders will hold 88% of the new company. Mesa shareholders will own between 6% and 12%, depending on certain pre-closing benchmarks.
The agreement includes conditions requiring Mesa to offload specific assets and liabilities, supported by United Airlines. As of June 30, 2024, Mesa held $16.3 milli<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/g41353277/mesa-air-group-reports-third-quarter-fiscal-2024-results">on in cash and equivalents</a>.
The dealmakers forecast pro forma cash and debt balances post-merger to be $285 million and $1.1 billion, respectively. Mesa will not transfer any outstanding debt.
The combined firm projects an annual revenue of approximately $1.9 billion and an adjusted EBITDA exceeding $320 million.

The current Republic leadership team will guide the merged airline. The new Board will include six Republic directors and one independent Mesa appointee.

Republic Airways, which began operations in 1974, has built itself into one of the largest regional airlines in the U.S., flying more than 17 million passengers annually and operating over 240 Embraer 170/175 aircraft. 
The carrier maintains long-term agreements with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, providing consistent revenue streams. In 2024, Republic reported approximately $1.5 billion in revenue and $65 million in net income.
The merger aims to improve operational efficiency, expand route offerings, and increase the financial strength of the newly formed entity.
&#8220;We&#8217;re thrilled to combine the Republic and Mesa teams to create one of the world&#8217;s leading Embraer Jet operators,&#8221; said&nbsp;Republic&#8217;s President and CEO, Bryan Bedford.
The unified airline will operate roughly 310 E-Jet aircraft, performing over 1,250 daily departures, and maintain both companies&#8217; current route networks and FAA certifications until a single operating certificate is secured.
Price Action: MESA shares traded higher by 26.43% at 90 cents in premarket at last check Monday.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">&#8216;Breeding Ground&#8217;</h3>
Harari pointed to social media as a breeding ground for chaos, fueled by bots that impersonate people and flood platforms with fake news, conspiracy theories, and rage — all to drive engagement. 
"The two most obvious countermeasures are, first of all, to ban fake humans," he said. "They are welcome to talk with human beings only if they clearly identify themselves as AIs." He stressed the psychological manipulation that occurs when people believe a trending story is organically popular, not realizing it's being pushed by a swarm of bots.

The second safeguard, he said, involves accountability: "Companies should be liable for the actions of their algorithms." He dismissed the common defense of free speech, saying, "The problem is not what human beings are saying. The problem is the decisions of algorithms."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Harari&#8217;s Views On Politics</h3>
On politics, Harari didn't hold back. He said, "Democracy is all about self-correcting mechanisms. The danger is: What if you give power to somebody that doesn't want to give it back?" He described Trump's worldview as one where "the strong rule and the weak must obey the strong," warning that such thinking could escalate global militarization and undermine cooperation.
Harari also sounded the alarm over AI monopolies: "It would be very dangerous if only two countries or a few countries monopolize AI technology." He urged global cooperation, especially among nations like Japan, India, Brazil, and the EU, to prevent domination by the U.S. and China.
Despite the warnings, Harari sees hope. "AI can invent new medicines, can help us deal with climate change," he said. But he cautioned that its unpredictability makes it "an alien intelligence." The challenge now? "You cannot predict what kind of ideas AI will invent or what kind of decision it will make."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Criticism From The Scientific Community, Academics</h3>
Yuval Noah Harari&#8217;s Sapiens has faced criticism from scientists and academicians for its speculative approach and lack of rigorous evidence. Anthropologist Christopher Robert Hallpike <a href="https://www.newenglishreview.org/articles/a-response-to-yuval-hararis-sapiens-a-brief-history-of-humankind/">dismissed</a> the book as making no &#8220;serious contribution to knowledge,&#8221; describing it as infotainment filled with sensational speculation rather than substantive analysis. Similarly, Charles C. Mann critiqued Harari&#8217;s assertions as unsourced and <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/book-review-sapiens-a-brief-history-of-humankind-by-yuval-noah-harari-1423261230">overly simplistic</a>, likening them to &#8220;dorm-room bull sessions&#8221;.
Moreover, Harari&#8217;s evolutionary explanations for religion and human cognition have been called <a href="https://www.discovery.org/a/review-of-yuval-noah-hararis-sapiens/">reductive</a>; his reliance on &#8220;accidental genetic mutations&#8221; and naturalistic assumptions oversimplifies complex phenomena, failing to account for deeper religious and societal intricacies. Such critiques highlight the book&#8217;s tendency toward engaging narrative over scientific rigor.

Janover, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JNVR#NASDAQ">JNVR</a>) (the "Company") announced today that it had raised approximately $42 million in an offering of convertible notes and warrants from Pantera Capital, Kraken, Arrington Capital, Protagonist, The Norstar Group, Third Party Ventures, Trammell Venture Partners, and 11 angel investors. The notes were sold in a private offering under Section 4(a)(2) under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the "Securities Act") and Regulation D promulgated thereunder.
The aggregate principal amount of the convertible notes sold in the offering was approximately $42 million, which are convertible into the Company's common stock, par value $0.00001 per share ("Common Stock"). The convertible notes accrue interest at a rate of 2.5% per year, paid in cash quarterly in arrears, and mature on April 6, 2030. The convertible notes are convertible at any time prior to the maturity date, conditioned on the requirement that the Company's market capitalization equaled or exceeded $100 million on the day prior to the conversion date. The conversion price will be set on the date that the Company's market capitalization first equals or exceeds $100 million to equal the last reported sale price of the Common Stock on The Nasdaq Stock Market, subject to a minimum conversion price of $4.81. For each $1,000 in principal amount of convertible notes purchased, warrants were issued to purchase (1) approximately 8.333 shares of Common Stock at an exercise price of $120 per share and (2) approximately 6.666 shares of Common Stock at an exercise price of $150 per share. The conversion price and exercise price, respectively, are subject to customary anti-dilution and dividend protections.

Shell PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHEL#NYSE">SHEL</a>) shares were trading lower in premarket on Monday after the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/g44660686/shell-first-quarter-2025-update-note" rel="noreferrer noopener">revised&nbsp;its first-quarter&nbsp;outlook</a>.
For the&nbsp;first quarter, it cut the guidance for production at Integrated Gas to around 910 &#8211; 950 thousand boe/d (vs. the prior outlook of 930 – 990&nbsp;thousand boe/d) due to unplanned maintenance, mainly in Australia.
Also, Shell revised the outlook for Upstream to about 1,790 &#8211; 1,890 thousand boe/d <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/buybacks/25/01/43332871/shell-q4-lower-earnings-cost-reductions-dividend-boost-and-more" rel="noreferrer noopener">(vs. earlier outlook of 1,750 – 1,950 thousand boe/d)</a>, reflecting the completion of the SPDC divestment in March 2025.
In the Upstream segment, the company projects a share of profit / (loss) of joint ventures and associates of ~$200 million and exploration well write-offs of ~$0.1 billion in the quarter.
The company now projects Marketing sales volumes of&nbsp;around 2,500 &#8211; 2,900 thousand b/d (vs. earlier guidance of 2,500 – 3,000 thousand b/d), reflecting a lower contribution from Sectors &amp; Decarbonisation.
Shell anticipates refinery utilization of around&nbsp;83% – 87% (vs. prior outlook of 80% – 88%) and chemical manufacturing plant utilization of between&nbsp;79% – 83% <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">(vs. earlier guidance of 78% – 86%)</a>.
The company expects Trading &amp; Optimisation to be significantly higher than the fourth quarter of FY24 in Chemicals and Products segment.
The company also adjusted its LNG production forecast, now predicting between 6.4 million and 6.8 million metric tons from a previous&nbsp;guidance&nbsp;of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/g43327844/shell-plc-publishes-fourth-quarter-2024-press-release" rel="noreferrer noopener">6.6 million – 7.2 million metric tons</a>.
Last month, at Capital Markets Day 2025,&nbsp;Shell&nbsp;disclosed plans to increase shareholder distributions from&nbsp;30%-40%&nbsp;to&nbsp;40%-50%&nbsp;of cash flow from operations&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/guidance/25/03/44470278/shell-unveils-new-strategy-higher-buybacks-cost-cuts-and-10-annual-free-cash-flow-growth" rel="noreferrer noopener">(CFFO) throughout economic cycles</a>.
Shell has raised its structural cost reduction target from&nbsp;$2-3 billion by the end of 2025 to a cumulative&nbsp;$5-7 billion by 2028,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">based on 2022 levels</a>.
