U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy visited Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, where he was joined by CEO Elon Musk.
What Happened: "We're thrilled about the future of autonomous vehicles and Tesla, one of the great companies that are evolving this technology," Duffy said in a video on social media platform X, which showcased highlights from his visit to the factory on Tuesday.

In a separate video, the Secretary shared a conversation with Musk where they talked about the Department of Transportation's role in innovation in the American auto industry.

Musk touched upon federal regulation for autonomous vehicles in the U.S. "It'd be wonderful for the United States to have a national set of rules for autonomous driving as opposed to 50 independent sets of rules on a state-by-state rules basis," Musk said.
Duffy echoed Musk's comments in the video. "You can't have 50 different rules for 50 different states. You need one standard," he said before sharing that the agency has asked AV companies to send in data so that the DOT can develop a single standard.
Why It Matters: Duffy's comments come in as the agency eased <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45001024/trump-administration-announces-exemptions-for-autonomous-driving-companies-in-the-us-eases-self-driving-crash-report-requirements">some of the regulations</a> required for Domestic Autonomous Driving companies and provided them with some U.S. Safety Standards exemptions, previously reserved for imports.
House GOP Representatives also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/05/45277309/house-gop-representatives-want-to-axe-federal-ev-credit-amid-trumps-tax-cuts-report">proposed axing the Federal EV credit</a> currently offered on all EV purchases, which has been opposed by automakers who are in favor of gradually phasing out the credits instead of a blanket halt.
Elsewhere, Duffy also recently shared that the previous Biden administration had reportedly exceeded its legal capacity by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45514932/us-transportation-secretary-says-the-biden-administration-exceeded-legal-authority-to-include-evs-in-cafe-regulations-report">illegally using CAFE standards </a>as a "backdoor EV mandate."

Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas believes search giant Google is currently at its most vulnerable since its founding over two decades ago, caught between its legacy dominance in search advertising and the fast-moving disruption of AI-native search.
What Happened: During the Sohn Investment Conference 2025 in New York last week, Srinivas did not hold back while saying, &#8220;This is the first time in two decades that Google is extremely vulnerable,&#8221; citing Alphabet Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) heavy reliance on ultra-high-margin search advertising as a strategic liability in the current AI arms race.
While the company has diversified extensively over the years, across YouTube, Cloud, and even hardware, Srinivas argues that none of them are comparable in profitability. &#8220;YouTube is not a high-margin business… cloud is not a high-margin business… same thing with AI,&#8221; he said.

A former Google employee himself, Srinivas underscored the irony of it all, with the company having led the way with early AI breakthroughs, with acquisitions like DeepMind and DNNresearch, founded by Nobel Prize-winning luminaries, Demis Hassabis and Geoffrey Hinton, and yet Google was paralyzed by its own success.
&#8220;They can still be entrapped into this trap that they saw coming,&#8221; he says, referencing the classic innovator's dilemma.
The branding risk is also immense, Srinivas noted. &#8220;One out of ten mistakes at the scale of 10 billion daily queries is a billion mistakes a day,&#8221; he says. That level of failure in a public-facing AI product could erode Google's reputation, which was once, and probably still is, synonymous with trust and reliability.
Why It Matters: Two weeks ago, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) executive Eddy Cue disclosed that, for the first time, search volume on the company&#8217;s Safari browser, where Google remains the default search engine, had declined.
The revelation triggered a pullback in both Apple and Alphabet shares. Srinivas <a href="https://benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/05/45277969/ai-is-eating-search-google-rival-perplexity-ceo-arvind-srinivas-says-as-dan-nile-predicts-agents-to-take-future-share-amid-alphabet-apple-stock-fall">responded on X</a> with a blunt take, &#8220;AI is eating search.&#8221; The decline was widely interpreted as a sign that AI-native platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity are beginning to chip away at traditional search traffic.

Trump Eyes Retirement Overhaul That Could Push Billions From 401(k)s Into High-Stakes Private Equity Funds: Report

Weibo (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WB#NASDAQ">WB</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $0.45 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $0.38 by 18.42 percent. This is a 9.76 percent increase over earnings of $0.41 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $396.86 million which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $394.21 million by 0.67 percent. This is a 0.34 percent increase over sales of $395.50 million the same period last year.

On Tuesday, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) CEO Elon Musk clapped back at Bill Gates after the Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) co-founder said that the tech mogul's cost-cutting efforts at USAID under President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) could <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45311187/the-picture-of-the-worlds-richest-man-killing-the-worlds-poorest-children-is-not-a-pretty-one-says-bill-gates-slamming-elon-musk-over-abrupt-usaid-cuts">endanger millions of lives</a>.
What Happened: During an onstage interview at the Qatar Economic Forum, Musk pushed back hard on Gates&#8217; accusation that he is "killing the world's poorest children" through what the Microsoft co-founder described as ill-advised U.S. development aid.
In response, Musk demanded proof. "I'd like him to show us any evidence whatsoever that this is true. It's false."

"I wouldn't want that guy to babysit my kids," Musk added.
