This aligns with findings from an April 2018 study by the <a href="https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w24489/w24489.pdf">National Bureau of Economic Research</a> indicating that the average age of successful startup founders is around 45 years old.
The study analyzed 2.7 million startups and concluded that older entrepreneurs tend to build more resilient, scalable businesses. Still, Krieger's argument holds weight when considering consumer-driven industries.&nbsp;

Younger entrepreneurs, deeply embedded in digital culture, may be better positioned to identify trends before they peak—something Mark Zuckerberg proved when he launched Facebook at 19.
Historically, the debate isn't new. In the late 1990s, Steve Jobs famously criticized older executives, saying, &#8220;Innovation has nothing to do with how many years you've been around.&#8221; Yet, decades later, Amazon's Jeff Bezos built his empire in his 30s, and Warren Buffett didn't make the majority of his wealth until his 50s. The pattern? There isn't one.
Despite the age debate, one point most experts agree on is the value of relationships. Krieger recalled how interning at a startup solidified this for him. &#8220;It was full of people in their late 30s who had worked together three or four times since they were 20,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The relationships you build in your career will be the relationships you have over and over again.&#8221;

Their success wasn't just about youth or experience; it was about shared connections and learning from failures together.
Krieger also champions side projects, stating that they often fuel future success. &#8220;Not every step needs to make logical sense,&#8221; he emphasized, noting that seemingly unrelated experiences can later prove invaluable.&nbsp;
&#8220;There were definitely things I did where I thought, ‘Am I wasting my time here?' but later, they connected to the next thing I did.&#8221;&nbsp;

Instagram's Mike Krieger Reveals A Surprising Key To Startup Success—'Not Every Step Needs To Make Logical Sense'

Joe Gebbia, billionaire co-founder of Airbnb (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABNB#NASDAQ">ABNB</a>) and current Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) board member, is back in the spotlight for joining the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency.
One of the agency&#8217;s goals is purportedly to overhaul the outdated, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/02/43782511/its-like-a-time-warp-elon-musk-exposes-governments-1950s-retirement-system-still-processing-paperwork-by-hand-in-a-limestone-mine">paper-based federal retirement system</a> and replace it with something fast, modern, and, in his words, &#8220;beautifully designed.&#8221;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Digital Makeover for a Paper-Based System</h2>
&#8220;We really believe that the government can be an Apple Store–like experience: beautifully designed, great user experience, modern systems,&#8221; Gebbia said during a recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZfotdjNi-M">Fox News</a> interview alongside Elon Musk and other DOGE team members.&#8221;We can use design to solve [problems] and good engineering and create a better experience for everybody.&#8221;
Right now, the process of retiring as a federal employee is stuck in the past—literally. The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/us/politics/slash-now-fix-later.html">reported</a> that the applications are handled using 28,000 filing cabinets stored in a limestone cave in western Pennsylvania, a system that&#8217;s been in place since the 1970s. According to Gebbia, the process still takes months to complete.
In the Fox News interview, Musk said DOGE ran into a bottleneck after offering early retirement packages to hundreds of thousands of workers, only to find the government could process just 8,000 retirements per month.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gebbia Joins DOGE</h2>
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44265658/billionaire-airbnb-founder-works-with-elon-musk-at-doge">Gebbia joined DOGE</a> earlier this year after a conversation with Musk and fellow team member Anthony Armstrong, a former Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>) banker. &#8220;They told me something about a mine that dealt with retirement, and they said that they need somebody to help out to fix retirement in the government. I love the challenge, so I jumped on board.&#8221;
But not everyone is thrilled. As Forbes <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/suzannerowankelleher/2025/03/05/airbnb-distances-billionaire-cofounder-doge-musk/">reported</a> last month, news of Gebbia&#8217;s DOGE role has sparked backlash among Airbnb hosts and guests, with hundreds of negative comments appearing on the platform&#8217;s community portal. Some users have even threatened to stop using Airbnb. Complaints range from &#8220;I am extremely disturbed&#8221; to &#8220;Joe Gebbia cannot remain on the board.&#8221;

Airbnb has tried to calm the waters. Spokesperson Christopher Nulty told Forbes, &#8220;Joe is joining DOGE in his personal capacity&#8221; and emphasized that his &#8220;personal views don&#8217;t reflect the views of Airbnb or Airbnb.org.&#8221;
Gebbia has not had an operational role at Airbnb since 2022 but remains on the board. He also sits on the board at Tesla and is reportedly a close associate of Musk. According to Forbes, he holds a 7% stake in Airbnb, worth around $8.6 billion, and recently sold $30.4 million worth of Airbnb stock in February.
His political activity has also raised eyebrows. While his Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky and Nate Blecharczyk have supported Democratic candidates, Gebbia donated tens of thousands to Libertarian causes and nearly $178,000 to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.&#8216;s campaign.

Airbnb Co-Founder And DOGE Employee Joe Gebbia Says, 'Government Can Have An Apple Store-Like Experience' That's 'Beautifully Designed'

Kevin O&#8217;Leary, better known as &#8220;Mr. Wonderful&#8221; from ABC's &#8220;Shark Tank,&#8221; isn't buying into <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44270128/us-recession-probability-escalates-to-35-amid-tariffs-pimco-sounds-alarm">recession fears</a> fueled by recent tariff moves. In a recent interview on CNN that he <a href="https://x.com/kevinolearytv/status/1907132858436931845">posted on X</a>, O&#8217;Leary said many economic forecasts are assuming tariffs will be &#8220;permanent and in perpetuity,&#8221; which he believes is unrealistic.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s the case,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What&#8217;s unusual about the situation we have now is Trump likes to actually let you watch sausage being made. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">It&#8217;s About Reciprocity, Not Isolation</h2>
O&#8217;Leary explained that this approach is part of a broader push to make tariffs reciprocal. According to him, many of these trade rules date back to World War II and Trump is now trying to balance them out across countries.
&#8220;What he really wants to do is bring the ratio of tariffs to be equivalent between England or Canada or Mexico or any country,&#8221; O&#8217;Leary said. &#8220;In the end, if they&#8217;re going to be reciprocal, that actually promotes free trade.&#8221;
He argued that equal tariffs on both sides of a trade deal are inefficient. &#8220;It&#8217;s stupid to have the same equal tariff on both sides of any country. It&#8217;s just dumb. And everybody knows that.&#8221;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Canada&#8217;s Situation Is Political, Not Economic</h2>
O&#8217;Leary also pointed to Canada, saying the tension there is more about politics than trade. He claimed Canadian politicians are using anti-Trump sentiment to energize voters ahead of an upcoming election.
&#8220;They&#8217;re using Trump to get out the base to vote, anti-Trump everywhere,&#8221; O&#8217;Leary said. He specifically called out the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying, &#8220;He&#8217;s using Trump as the fulcrum to try to stay in power, or at least his party stays in power.&#8221;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">No Recession in Sight</h2>
Despite the noise, O&#8217;Leary said he doesn't see signs of an economic downturn.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t think this is going to cause a recession. I don&#8217;t see it in my own companies yet. And I think it&#8217;s going to be short-lived,&#8221; he said.
He added that some U.S. politicians are already calling for zero tariffs on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. &#8220;As occurred just 48 hours ago when Sen. [John] Kennedy out of Louisiana said, &#8216;Hey, what, are we idiots here? Canadians, zero tariffs. U.S., zero tariffs.'&#8221;
In O&#8217;Leary&#8217;s view, this period of tariff tension is part of a longer process of rebalancing global trade, and not something that should spark panic.

Trump's Tariffs Are 'Impacting Main Street,' Not Just Wall Street: BlackRock CEO Larry Fink Says

President Donald Trump&#8216;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44655719/trump-tariffs-erode-5-trillion-in-market-cap-in-2-days-as-china-retaliates-jerome-powell-warns-of-inflation">reciprocal tariff announcement</a> on April 2 shook financial markets as Wall Street and corporations braced for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44642355/trumps-25-auto-tariffs-spark-stellantis-layoffs-gm-expansion-uaws-shawn-fain-calls-job-cuts-completely-unnecessary">supply chain disruptions</a> worldwide. Even as the market closes roughly even on Monday, some believe the worst is yet to come.
Larry Fink&#8217;s Thoughts: Larry Fink, the billionaire CEO and co-founder of BlackRock, said many CEOs believe the U.S. is currently in a recession, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/07/ceos-think-the-us-is-probably-in-a-recession-right-now-says-blackrocks-larry-fink.html">according</a> to CNBC.
"Most CEOs I talk to would say we are probably in a recession right now," Fink said at the Economic Club of New York on Monday. &#8220;One CEO specifically said the airline industry is a proverbial bird in a coal mine — canary in the coal mine — and I was told that the canary is sick already."
The UCLA alum says that tariffs&#8217; stagflationary nature could put the Federal Reserve in a tough position in deciding to cut interest rates. While markets are pricing in up to four rate cuts in 2025, Fink believes inflation as a result of tariffs could restrict Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
Leon Cooperman&#8217;s Thoughts: Investor Leon Cooperman, the CEO of Omega Advisors, believes financial markets could experience even worse times ahead.
&#8220;I think there's too much confidence in the system … and we're correcting that right now. It's very clear to me the president has decided the best way to get inflation, interest rates down is to take a recession," Cooperman <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/07/leon-cooperman-says-market-bottom-is-not-in-as-trump-has-decided-a-recession-is-best-way-lower-rates.html">said</a> on CNBC Monday.
The New York native went on to say that he does not trust the current environment and is still accounting for significant levels of risk.
"What I'm looking for is companies to come out with disappointing statements,&#8221; Cooperman said. &#8220;Stocks trade down and close today, unchanged or up, and that tells me that the market has discounted the negative outcome."
