Last week was the 13F filings deadline at the SEC.
All stripes of money managers, from freshly minted mutual fund managers to hedge fund pros and patrician blue blood family offices, must send the Securities and Exchange Commission a list of every stock they owned at the end of the third quarter.
A simple comparison of this quarter&#8217;s filing to the last one shows what the best and brightest of Wall Street have been buying and selling recently.
The financial media and instant experts of the Internet have been all over the place in the last week, telling us what Warren Buffett, Cathie Wood, Michael Burry, Bill Ackman, and many other celebrity investors have been doing with their money recently.
It is undoubtedly a fun topic and occasionally interesting, but knowing what multi-gazillionaires are doing with their cash is not very useful for those of us still working to cobble together the first billion.
One of the most critical pieces of information from the quarterly filings is that most people who get paid to manage America&#8217;s money are mediocre at best.
What most do not realize is that this mediocrity is mostly intentional.
To be great, you must be different.
As Sir John Templeton pointed out, you cannot be great if you do what everyone else does.
Being different on Wall Street can get you fired.
Being a portfolio manager is a perfect job.
The easiest way to keep that job is to do what everybody else is doing.
That way, if something goes wrong, it is the market&#8217;s fault.
If you try to be great and something goes wrong, it is your fault.
The unemployment line beckons.
The trick to making money from the acts of idea piracy I perform every quarter is to dig deep and find those investors who dare to be different and are not managing so much money that mediocre is the best they can achieve.
One of the finest examples of that small handful of investors worthy of being raided is Glenn Greenberg of Brave Warriors Advisors.
The tale of Glenn Greenberg&#8217;s investing career is not a rags-to-riches tale by any stretch of the imagination.
His mother was the great-granddaughter of the founder of the Gimbels chain of department stores in New York.
While Gimbels closed in 1986, it was a major player in the retail industry for 144 years and is best known today (especially this time of year) for its role in &#8220;A Miracle on 34th Street.&#8221;
His father is Hall of Fame slugger Hank Greenberg, one of the greatest power hitters of all time. He helped lead the Detroit Tigers to two World Series titles.
Like many of the best investors, Glenn Greenberg did not take a traditional route to Wall Street. He got a degree in English from Yale University and followed that with a Master of Arts in Literature from New York University.
Then he went to Columbia and procured an MBA.
After completing his MBA in 1971, Greenberg joined Morgan Guaranty Trust&#8217;s Pension group as an analyst and portfolio manager, where he worked for five years. In 1978, he moved to Central-National Gottesman, collaborating with Arthur Ross and Edgar Wachenheim, two successful off-the-radar screen investors.
In 1984, Greenberg went out on his own with Chieftain Capital until 2010 when he outperformed the S&amp;P 500 by 50% annually.
He and his partner parted company, and Greenberg founded Brave Warrior Advisors.
The outperformance has continued at Brave Warrior as Greenberg has outperformed the indexes by a wide margin.
Greenberg uses a value-oriented philosophy and takes a handful of positions in companies he considers excellent businesses that can be purchased at attractive prices.
Like most fund managers, Greenberg holds stocks for years, not just months.
Idea pirates who owned the top ten stocks in the Brave Warrior Portfolio have done very well.
Greenberg was only adding shares of a handful of his holdings in the past quarter.
The largest addition was a new position in Ryanair Holdings (Ticker: RYAAY), the Dublin-based discount airline.
Ryanair is known for its high operating efficiency and strong market position. The airline currently offers over 3,600 flights to destinations in 340 cities worldwide.
Ryanair has ambitious growth plans and is targeting a 50% growth in passenger numbers by the end of the decade, supported by its growing fleet of fuel-efficient aircraft.
The airline&#8217;s strong balance sheet will allow it to manage the ebbs and flows of the global economy and air travel.
Coupled with its history of consistent profitability and a shareholder-friendly approach to capital returns, the company&#8217;s growth plans and strong balance sheet create the opportunity for massive long-term gains for patient, aggressive investors.
Brave Warrior was also buying more TD Synnex Corp (Ticker: SNX) shares. Synnex is a leading global distributor and solutions aggregator for the IT ecosystem, with over 150,000 customers in over 100 countries worldwide.
Synnex distributes products from over 2,500 vendors, including many in fast-growing marketplace segments like cloud, cybersecurity, big data/analytics, AI, IoT, mobility, and everything as a service.
Whoever the biggest winner in technology is going forward, there is a good chance Synnex will sell a significant percentage of the gear and equipment needed to reach their goals.
The firm&#8217;s third largest purchase is one of my favorite companies in one of my favorite industries.
We are not done using oil and gas.
We are not even close to being done.
We will need enormous amounts of both, especially natural gas, to fund the future of industry and technology.
It will all move through pipelines, terminals, processing centers, and other infrastructure.
Oil and gas companies will pay a fee to move their products through that infrastructure.
Much of that infrastructure is owned by MPLX (Ticker: MPLX), a publicly traded MLP.
They collect the fees and pay them out to shareholders as dividends.
The shares currently yield right around 7.5%.
The value of the assets they own and the cash they produce should increase over time.
A few years ago, I had a friend tell me they did not want to buy MLPs like MPLX because they hated dealing with K-1 forms at tax time.
Since then, he would have collected more than half the dividend purchase price, and the stock has almost tripled.
It would have been more profitable to pay the accountant.
Stealing ideas from Glenn Greenberg and his team may not be the most exciting thing you have ever done with your portfolio.
There is a good chance it could be the most profitable.

C-Suite Buys of the Week: Airlines and Infrastructure are Heating Up

Ryanair Holdings plc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RYAAY#NASDAQ">RYAAY</a>) reported <a target="_blank" href="https://investor.ryanair.com/results-centre/h1-fy25-results/" rel="noreferrer noopener">second-quarter </a>revenue growth of 3% YoY to €5.07 billion ($5.57 billion, beating the $5.55 billion estimate). Scheduled revenues gained 1% YoY to €3.62 billion, with a 7% decrease in average fares to 61 euros.
Traffic rose 9% to 115 million despite Boeing delays, while ancillary revenues grew 10% to 2.74 billion euros for the six months ended September 30.
Ryanair&#8217;s second-quarter EPS stood at 1.285 euros, down from 1.3239 euros a year ago. Operating costs increased 6% year over year to 3.42 billion euros. Net cash inflow from operating activities for the half-year period stood at 1.181 billion euros, down from 1.64 billion euros a year ago.
As of September 30, gross cash exceeded 3.3 billion euros and net cash stood at 0.6 billion euros, with 170x B737 &#8220;Gamechangers&#8221; in 608 fleet.
The company&#8217;s fuel needs in the second half of FY25 are 85% hedged at $79/bbl, providing risk protection amid recent price volatility. For FY26, hedging coverage has increased to 75% at $77/bbl, securing modest year-on-year savings.
&#8220;Many customers are switching to Ryanair for our lower air fares. As a result, we are capturing record share gains across most markets. Traffic, despite repeated Boeing delivery delays, grew 9% to 115m while ancillary revenues were resilient, rising 10% to €2.74bn. Operating costs performed well, rising 8% (lagging behind 9% traffic growth) to €6.68bn, as fuel hedge savings offset higher staff and other costs due, in part, to Boeing delivery delays. While modest delay compensation was received in H1 (mainly maintenance credits) this does not offset the substantial impact of a 5m+ passenger shortfall in FY25 due to these delivery delays,&#8221; commented Ryanair Group CEO Michael O&#8217;Leary.
Outlook: Ryanair continues to target to reach 198 million and 200 million passengers in FY25, reflecting an 8% increase, but this goal depends on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">Boeing deliveries staying on schedule.</a>
Full-year unit costs are expected to remain stable as savings from fuel hedges, interest income, and minor compensation for aircraft delays are set to counteract inflationary pressures, including crew wages, handling fees, and air traffic control costs.
Strong demand is projected for the third quarter, with pricing declines moderating, though fare expectations remain cautious. Limited fourth-quarter visibility and challenging comparisons with last year&#8217;s early Easter make it difficult to provide precise FY25 profit guidance.

We continue to target between 198m and 200m passengers in FY25 (+8%), subject to no worsening of current Boeing delivery delays. Unit costs performed well in H1 as the cost gap between Ryanair and EU competitor airlines continues to widen. We expect full-year unit costs to be broadly flat, as our fuel hedge savings, strong interest income and some modest aircraft delay compensation will largely offset ex-fuel cost inflation (particularly crew pay &amp; productivity increases, higher handling &amp; ATC fees and the cost inefficiency of repeated B737 delivery delays). Forward bookings suggest that Q3 demand is strong and the decline in pricing appears to be moderating. We remain cautious on Q3's ave. fare outlook, expecting them to be modestly lower than Q3 prior year (subject to close-in Christmas and New Year bookings). As is normal at this time of year, we have almost zero Q4 visibility, although this quarter will not benefit from last year's early Easter, which will make the prior year Q4 comps challenging. It therefore remains too early to provide meaningful FY25 PAT guidance. The final FY25 outcome will be subject to avoiding adverse developments during the remaining 5 months of FY25, especially given the risk of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, repeated ATC short-staffing and capacity restrictions, and/or further Boeing delivery delays."

The shareholder-friendly approach also bodes well for the company. However, the company is grappling with the freight market downturn.
<h2>Factors Favoring LSTR</h2>
Landstar&#39;s commitment to shareholder value is commendable, as the company consistently returns significant capital to its investors through stock repurchase programs and dividends. U.S. stocks were mixed, with the Dow Jones index falling around 0.1% on Tuesday.
Shares of The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HAIN#NASDAQ">HAIN</a>) shares gained 34.2% to $9.16 after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter adjusted EPS results.
The company reported fourth quarter adjusted earnings per share of 13 cents, beating the analyst consensus estimate of 8 cents. Quarterly revenues of $418.80 million missed the street view of $421.2 million.
Hain Celestial shares jumped 34.2% to $9.16 on Tuesday.

Hain Celestial Posts Upbeat Q4 Earnings, Joins Soleno Therapeutics, Energizer Holdings And Other Big Stocks Moving Higher On Tuesday

Allegiant Travel Company (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/algt#NASDAQ">ALGT</a>) recently reported disappointing traffic numbers for July 2024.&nbsp;
Scheduled traffic (measured in revenue passenger miles) fell 1.7% from the July 2023 levels. Capacity (measured in available seat miles) for scheduled service grew 2.4% year over year. As traffic failed to outpace capacity expansion, the load factor (percentage of seats filled by passengers) in July 2024 declined to 87.5% from 91.2% a year ago.
Total departures (scheduled services) improved 2.7% in July 2024 from a year ago. Moreover, its average stage length (miles) grew 0.3% year over year.
For the total system (including scheduled service and fixed fee contract), Allegiant carried 1.8% less passengers in July 2024 from the year-ago period. System-wide capacity expanded 3.2% in July 2024 on a year-over-year basis.
The fuel price per gallon in July 2024 is estimated to have been $2.84.

Copa Holdings, S.A. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cpa#NYSE">CPA</a>) reported solid traffic numbers for July 2024 on the back of upbeat air-travel demand. Driven by high passenger volumes, revenue passenger miles (a measure of traffic) rose in double digits in July on a year-over-year basis. To match the demand swell, CPA is increasing its capacity. In July, available seat miles (a measure of capacity) increased 11.3% year over year. Revenue passenger miles increased 9.5% year over year. Although traffic improved on a year-over-year basis, it failed to outpace capacity expansion. As a result, the load factor (percentage of seats filled by passengers) fell to 87.6% from 89% in July 2023.
Ryanair Holdings (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ryaay#NASDAQ">RYAAY</a>), a European carrier, also reported solid traffic numbers for July 2024, driven by upbeat air-travel demand.
The number of passengers transported on Ryanair flights was 20.2 million in July 2024, reflecting an 8% year-over-year increase. RYAAY&#39;s traffic in July was much more than the June reading of 19.3 million, the May reading of 18.9 million, the April reading of 17.3 million and the March reading of 13.6 million.
The July load factor (percentage of seats filled by passengers) of 96% remained flat on a year-over-year basis. The figure was higher than the load factor of 95% reported in June as well as May, 92% reported in April 2024 and 93% reported in March 2024.
Notably, RYAAY operated more than 110,500 flights in July 2024. This marks an improvement from 106,000 flights operated in June 2024, 105,000 flights in May 2024, 98,400 flights in April 2024 and 77,000 flights in March 2024. However, almost 651 flights got canceled due to the ATC (air traffic control) delays.
