SK Telecom Announces 'AI Pyramid Strategy' Focusing On Infrastructure, Transformation, And Service

Many of the largest technology companies are looking for new ways to invest in artificial intelligence, which includes investments in their own products and research, as well as&nbsp;taking stakes in smaller <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/artificial-intelligence">AI companies</a>.
On Monday, Amazon.com, Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) announced an investment in the privately held AI company Anthropic. Here&rsquo;s a look at past investments in Anthropic and who benefits from today&rsquo;s news.
What Happened: Amazon <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/23/09/34864031/amazon-invests-4-billion-in-chatgpt-competitor-ai-startup-anthropic">announced a new collaboration </a>with Anthropic that will see the companies work together on the development of AI models and provide access to the tools to Amazon Web Services customers.
The e-commerce leader said it will invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic with a minority ownership position in the company.
&ldquo;We have tremendous respect for Anthropic&rsquo;s team and foundation models, and believe we can help improve many customer experiences, short and long-term, through our deeper collaboration,&rdquo; Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said.
Amazon will invest an initial $1.25 billion in Anthropic&nbsp;with an option to increase its total investment to $4 billion, according <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2023/09/25/amazon-to-invest-up-to-4-billion-in-ai-startup-anthropic/">to</a> TechCrunch.
Anthropic plans to raise up to $5 billion over the next two years to help fund and launch its subscription plan for Claude 2, a chatbot&nbsp;and to build a &ldquo;frontier model&rdquo; called Claude-Next.
The private artificial intelligence company has raised around $2.7 billion and was valued at $5 billion earlier this year.
The valuation of the company based on Amazon&rsquo;s investment is not known.

One of the investors in Anthropic&nbsp;via his Sound Ventures firm&nbsp;is actor&nbsp;Ashton Kutcher. Anthropic, along with Replit and MosaicML are the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/specialty-etfs/23/08/33966459/is-nvidia-overpriced-cathie-woods-ark-invest-points-to-3-other-stocks">three privately owned</a> companies she recently highlighted in which the fund is invested.&nbsp;
Another early investor in Anthropic was FTX, the bankrupt cryptocurrency platform co-founded by its former CEO&nbsp;Sam Bankman-Fried.
FTX Wins on Investment: Benzinga previously reported on an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/02/30745316/sbf-girlfriend-plowed-funds-into-chatgpt-like-firm-now-google-wants-a-piece">investment in Anthropic</a> by FTX and Alameda. Anthropic raised $580 million in a Series B funding round that included FTX and Alameda.
According to <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/anthropic">Crunchbase</a>, the Series B was led by&nbsp;Bankman-Fried. Other investors listed for the company include Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda, and Nishad Singh, the former director of engineering at FTX.
While it is unclear exactly what valuation FTX invested in Anthropic at, it was significantly lower than the $4-to-$5-billion valuation the AI company had earlier this year&nbsp;and likely even lower than the new valuation created by the Amazon investment.
As part of its bankruptcy filing, the $500-million stake in Anthropic was unveiled and became a highly sought-after asset in the bankruptcy proceedings of selling off items to help pay back debtors.
In June, FTX <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/06/33040841/ftx-halts-sale-of-ai-startup-anthropic-despite-whopping-9-figure-price-tag-report">paused plans to sell </a>its stake in Anthropic, valued at $500 million.
A few months later, there is a high possibility that FTX&rsquo;s stake in Anthropic is worth more and likely even more in demand from a prominent investor.
The big news in the cryptocurrency space recently was FTX being <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/09/34549075/ftx-gets-green-light-to-liquidate-3-4b-in-crypto-to-pay-off-creditors">allowed to sell</a> the cryptocurrency it was holding, including Solana (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/sol/usd">SOL</a>) and Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>). Total crypto assets of $3.4 billion could be sold off to help pay debtors and get the company past bankruptcy.
The company&rsquo;s stake in Anthropic could be just as big of news, and holding the stake for an extra three months could have a huge benefit for the bankruptcy procedure for the cryptocurrency platform.
Benzinga&#39;s Take:&nbsp;With Amazon and Alphabet, two of the world&rsquo;s biggest companies, now investors in Anthropic, expect FTX&rsquo;s stake in the company to attract some major attention when it goes back on the sale block.

How Holding On To Anthropic Stake May Benefit FTX In Bankruptcy

Streaming giant Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nflx#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>)&nbsp;had many hit series and movies over the years. Of all the content on Netflix, none came close to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/10/23284218/squid-game-mania-takes-over-what-it-could-mean-for-netflix-and-this-apparel-stock">record-setting performance of &ldquo;Squid Game.&rdquo;</a>
The massive success of &ldquo;Squid Game&rdquo; led to a lawsuit from a leading telecommunications company over increased network traffic. The lawsuit has been resolved with a partnership announced this week.
What Happened: Netflix and telecommunications company SK Telecom Co Ltd (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/skm#NYSE">SKM</a>) have<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/10/23189129/netflix-countersued-by-south-korean-firm-following-traffic-surge-due-to-squid-game"> been in a battle </a>since 2020 relating to broadband usage. After increased traffic demand due to &ldquo;Squid Game,&rdquo; SK Telecom unit SK Broadband sued the streaming company.
SK said at the time that Netflix was the second largest data traffic generator, trailing only Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/goog#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>)(NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/googl#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>)-owned YouTube. Other big traffic generators including Amazon, Apple and Facebook were said to be paying SK Broadband.
After three years and several lawsuits, Netflix, SK Telecom and SK Broadband are putting their differences aside and <a href="https://about.netflix.com/en/news/sk-telecom-sk-broadband-and-netflix-establish-strategic-partnership-to">announced </a>a partnership.
The partnership will see bundled packages offered for customers with Netflix, SK Telecom and SK Broadband items offered together. The bundle packages have different price points offered to consumers.
Additional plans will be offered with Netflix and SK Telecom&rsquo;s subscription service T Universe bundled together and additional plans with Netflix&rsquo;s ad-supported lower-priced plan.
The new bundles will be released in the first half of 2024, according to the companies.
Alongside the new partnership and bundle options, Netflix and the SK Telecom units will explore levering AI technologies from SK that could create &ldquo;better entertainment experiences for customers.&rdquo;
As part of the partnership, SK Broadband and Netflix are ending all past disputes.
&ldquo;Netflix is committed to creating and delivering the best stories to members in Korea and audiences worldwide, and we have high expectations for the journey ahead as partners serving our customers with SK Telecom and SK Broadband,&rdquo; Netflix Vice President of APAC Partnerships Tony Zameczkowski said.

Why It&rsquo;s Important: The newly signed partnership does not have financial details, but could see Netflix off the hook for paying out a fee related to the increased network demands SK Broadband had during &ldquo;Squid Game&rsquo;s&rdquo; peak popularity.
A South Korean court listed a cost of around $23 million that Netflix should have to pay for the increased network demands realized by SK Broadband, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/18/23879475/netflix-squid-game-sk-broadband-partnership">according </a>to The Verge.
Resolving the lawsuits and announcing the partnership comes as Netflix has been<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/23/04/31980279/netflix-to-boost-south-korean-content-with-2-5b-investment-riding-on-success-of-squid-game"> spending additional money</a> in South Korea on new content and has more &ldquo;Squid Game&rdquo; related content coming.
A <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/22/06/27670809/green-light-squid-game-2-gets-teaser-from-netflix-director-shares-details">sequel to the hit series</a> is planned for Netflix and the streaming giant also has a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/22/06/27711523/netflix-hosting-squid-game-reality-show-how-you-can-apply-and-how-much-you-can-win">reality show based</a> on the hit show coming to the platform in the future.
&ldquo;Squid Game&rdquo; holds the Netflix record with 1.65 billion hours watched in the first 28 days of availability. The series was watched by 142 million member households in the first four weeks on Netflix.
Netflix ended the most recently reported<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/23/07/33292423/netflix-shares-rewind-from-52-week-highs-q2-revenue-miss-earnings-beat-subscriber-growth"> second quarter</a> with 238.39 million global paid subscribers.

'Squid Game' Was So Popular On Netflix, It Got Sued: Three Years Later A Partnership Is Forged

Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic, co-founded by former OpenAI leaders, secured a $100 million investment from South Korean telecommunications behemoth, SK Telecom Co Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SKM#NYSE">SKM</a>).
The announcement came three months after Anthropic&#8217;s Series C funding round led by Spark Capital which raised $450 million.
SK Telecom&#8217;s strategic investment highlights its plans to partner with Anthropic in crafting a multilingual large language model tailored for international telecommunications corporations, according <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2023/08/14/ai-startup-anthropic-raises-100m-from-korean-telco-giant-sk-telecom/">to</a> Tech Crunch.
The model aims to provide customized AI solutions for Global Telco AI Alliance members such as Deutsche Telekom, e&amp; and Singtel. The solutions will cater to the nuanced requirements of their specific markets in languages spanning English, Korean, German, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish, Tech Crunch said.
Anthropic&#8217;s LLM: Launched in 2021 and principally founded by Daniela and Dario Amodei, Anthropic has been sculpting an AI system, Claude, comparable to OpenAI's Chat GPT. The system enables businesses to streamline search functions, automation, coding and various other tasks. SK Telecom&#8217;s CEO Ryu Young-sang expressed optimism about melding Korean language-oriented LLMs (large language models) with Anthropic's AI capabilities to spearhead the AI ecosystem, the report said.
AI Fever Spreading Globally: AI's leap into mainstream industries hasn&#8217;t escaped the keen eye of celebrities. Actor and entrepreneur Ashton Kutcher underscored an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/23/05/32192147/ashton-kutcher-says-companies-not-investing-in-ai-will-go-out-of-business-and-hes-putting-h">undeniable opportunity in AI</a>, raising $243 million earlier this year to invest in various AI startups.
