Reuters Reported Unilever Plans to Cut 1,700 European Jobs, 1,500 Fewer Than Expected; Hire 1,000 for Ice Cream Unit

Vermont-based ice cream manufacturer Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s, an independent subsidiary of Unilever plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UL#NYSE">UL</a>), has a long <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/04/38440644/ben-jerrys-wont-stop-fighting-until-theres-cannabis-legalization-and-justice-says-activism-lead">history of corporate activism</a>. Its latest round has brought it into conflict with its own parent company.
What Happened: On Wednesday, Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s filed a contract lawsuit against Unilever in the Southern District of New York. The federal lawsuit alleges that Unilever breached Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s autonomy over social justice activism, specifically its various statements in support of a cease-fire between the Israeli government and Hamas in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/10/41405272/sinwar-death-marks-turning-point-in-gaza-war-netanyahu-says-its-the-beginning-of-the-end">the ongoing war</a>. Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s and Unilever hold agreements to allow the brand's independent board to make social justice activism decisions.
Unilever has not yet filed a response, but a spokesperson reacted to Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s lawsuit in an email to Benzinga.
&#8220;Our heart goes out to all victims of the tragic events in the Middle East,&#8221; the spokesperson said. &#8220;We reject the claims made by B&amp;J's social mission board, and we will defend our case very strongly. We would not comment further on this legal matter."
The Burlington-based company&#8217;s complaint alleges that Unilever &#8220;silenced&#8221; efforts to speak out in support of Palestine. Following Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s statement in 2023 in support of an Israel-Palestinian cease-fire, the London, England-based parent company allegedly threatened to dissolve its independent board and sue board members.
In addition, Unilever blocked Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s donations to Jewish Voice for Peace and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, two organizations in support of Palestinians, the ice cream brand alleges. 
Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s previously sued Unilever in 2022. The ice cream manufacturer had announced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/21/07/22048169/ben-jerrys-joins-bds-movement-to-boycott-west-bank-and-east-jerusalem">cessation of sales</a> in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in protest of Israeli policy. Unilever subsequently sold Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s Israel license, something Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s said was done without permission.
Why It Matters: It is considered rare for a subsidiary to file a lawsuit against its own parent company.

Ben & Jerry's Sues Parent Company Unilever Over Alleged Gaza Protest Censorship

Unilever PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UL#NYSE">UL</a>) shares are<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener"> trading relatively flat on Thursday.</a>
The company is reportedly exploring the sale of some of its smaller food brands, including those based in the Netherlands, as part of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/03/37815586/chilling-changes-unilever-to-separate-iconic-ice-cream-brands-in-strategic-shake-up" rel="noreferrer noopener">strategic shift under CEO Hein Schumacher.</a>
The company is looking to streamline its portfolio and refocus on its key power brands, reported Reuters, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
This move may improve profitability and better position Unilever for long-term growth.

The lawsuit accuses the parent company of attempting to suppress the ice cream maker&#8217;s support for Palestinian refugees and its calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/14/business/ben-and-jerrys-unilever-lawsuit-israel-gaza.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">according </a>to The New York Times.
The legal action deepens a longstanding conflict between the two companies.

What Happened: On Friday, X dropped its claims against Unilever in the antitrust lawsuit filed in a federal court in Wichita Falls, Texas, in August.
X confirmed the agreement with Unilever and expressed satisfaction to &#8220;continue our partnership with them on the platform.&#8221;

Elon Musk's X Reaches Agreement With Unilever, Drops It From Ad Boycott Lawsuit: 'First Part Of The Ecosystem-Wide Solution'

Unilever PLC (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ul#NYSE">UL</a>) has been on a downward spiral lately with significant selling pressure. After declining 5.1% over the past four weeks, the stock looks well positioned for a trend reversal as it is now in oversold territory and there is strong agreement among Wall Street analysts that the company will report better earnings than they predicted earlier.
<h2>Guide to Identifying Oversold Stocks</h2>
We use Relative Strength Index (RSI), one of the most commonly used technical indicators, for spotting whether a stock is oversold. This is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and change of price movements.
RSI oscillates between zero and 100. Usually, a stock is considered oversold when its RSI reading falls below 30.
Technically, every stock oscillates between being overbought and oversold irrespective of the quality of their fundamentals. And the beauty of RSI is that it helps you quickly and easily check if a stock&#39;s price is reaching a point of reversal.
So, by this measure, if a stock has gotten too far below its fair value just because of unwarranted selling pressure, investors may start looking for entry opportunities in the stock for benefitting from the inevitable rebound.
However, like every investing tool, RSI has its limitations, and should not be used alone for making an investment decision.
<h2>Why UL Could Bounce Back Before Long</h2>
The heavy selling of UL shares appears to be in the process of exhausting itself, as indicated by its RSI reading of 29.36. So, the trend for the stock could reverse soon for reaching the old equilibrium of supply and demand.

Many people likely have no idea that 7-Eleven is currently owned by a Japanese company according to a poll of Benzinga readers.
What Happened: Canadian convenience store owner Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ANCTF#OTC">ANCTF</a>) has proposed an offer to buy Seven &amp; I Holdings Co, the owner of 7-Eleven, for a reported $31 billion. The news of the deal sent shares of Seven &amp; I Holdings <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/08/40453525/7-eleven-owner-seven-i-holdings-sees-6-drop-in-shares-amid-alimentation-couche-tards-potential-takeo">higher to start the week.</a>
7-Eleven was founded in the 1920s in Texas, which currently serves as the company's headquarters. The convenience store has been owned by the Japanese company since 2005, which many Americans likely weren't aware of.
"Did you know that 7-Eleven is a Japanese-owned company?" Benzinga asked its readers.
Seventy-one percent of poll respondents answered no, with 29% saying yes that they knew 7-Eleven was owned by a Japanese company.
