<p>Wall Street's sell-off shows no signs of easing into the week's close, in what's shaping up to be the worst week for U.S. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">equities since March 2020</a>.</p>
<p>The market's bleeding is now visible across the board: the Dow Jones has slipped into correction territory, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 has entered a bear market after falling more than 20% from its highs.</p>
<p>Tech and semiconductor stocks have taken the brunt of the damage, following China's announcement of retaliatory tariffs of 34% on U.S. goods — a tit-for-tat move matching the rate once imposed by President Donald Trump.</p>
<p>The VIX index — also known as the &#8220;market fear gauge&#8221;&nbsp;— spiked 35% to 40 levels, heading for the highest daily close since October 2020.</p>
<p>Other countries are threatening retaliation, fueling fears of a broader global trade war that could disrupt supply chains and weigh heavily on the global economy.</p>
<p>The <strong>iShares Semiconductor ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) — a key proxy for the U.S. chipmaking industry — has plunged 16% this week, on track for its worst performance since September 2001 at the height of the dot-com crash.</p>
<p><strong>Apple Inc</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) extended its losses by another 4.7% on Friday, heading toward its steepest two-day decline since 2013, as investors brace for potential revenue hits from the new Chinese tariffs.</p>
<p>Even <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44645518/strong-jobs-report-offers-hope-but-will-it-be-enough-to-counter-tariff-turmoil">a strong U.S. jobs report</a> — with 228,000 payrolls added in March, far above the expected 135,000 — did little to soothe nerves.</p>
<p>Hopes that Fed Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong> might strike a more dovish tone were dashed. He <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44648681/powell-cites-tariff-driven-inflation-risks-shrugs-off-trumps-call-for-perfect-time-to-cut-rates">offered no signs of urgency to cut </a>rates, reiterating that the Fed is in no rush, and flagged inflation risks tied to tariffs. Powell stressed the importance of monitoring inflation expectations closely. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> continued posting on Truth Social, touting the &#8220;great jobs numbers&#8221; and warning China against behavior it &#8220;cannot afford to do.&#8221; He again pressed Powell to cut rates, saying it's the "perfect time," but his words seem to be losing sway on Wall Street.</p>
<p>As stocks slumped, bonds notched their best day of the year thus far. The popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) fell 2.1%. Yields on the 10-year Treasury note were down by 10 basis points to 3.94%. </p>

<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong>'s sweeping new trade tariffs sent shockwaves through global markets on Thursday, triggering a massive sell-off that echoed the COVID-19 pandemic-era routs, as investor risk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">appetite vanished in a flash.</a></p>
<p>Wall Street saw a staggering $2 trillion in market cap erased, with the U.S.&#8217;s biggest 10 companies shedding $1 trillion alone.</p>
<p><strong>Apple Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) plunged 8.7%, staring down its worst day since March 2020 and wiping out nearly $300 billion in value. <strong>NVIDIA Corp.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) tumbled 6.4%, losing $171.9 billion, while <strong>Amazon.com Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) dropped 8%, on pace for a $166 billion hit.</p>

<p>The S&amp;P 500 fell nearly 4%, poised for its worst session since September 2022, and sank to a seven-month low. Small caps took the brunt of the sell-off, with the Russell 2000 plunging over 5% and officially entering a bear market, now down more than 20% from its 2024 peak.</p>
<p>Fears of retaliatory action from key U.S. trading partners dragged every major sector into the red, except for defensive plays like consumer staples and utilities.</p>
<p>Consumer discretionary stocks were slammed. Apparel names posted double-digit losses: <strong>Ralph Lauren</strong> <strong>Corp</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>), <strong>Nike Inc</strong>. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>), <strong>Lululemon Athletica Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) and <strong>Garmin Ltd. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GRMN#NYSE">GRMN</a>) each dropped between 10% and 16%.</p>
<p>Cruise lines were also hit hard: <strong>Norwegian Cruise Holdings Ltd.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) sank 13%, <strong>Carnival Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>) fell 10%, and <strong>Royal Caribbean Ltd</strong>. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) slid 9%.</p>
<p>Bond markets saw a mild flight to safety. Treasury yields edged lower, yet the U.S. dollar weakened 1.6%, with the DXY index heading for its worst day since November 2022.</p>
<p>Commodities weren't spared. Oil prices nosedived on fears of a global slowdown, worsened by OPEC+'s surprise move to raise output. West Texas Intermediate crude plunged 7.5%, slipping below $70 per barrel.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) showed relative resilience in the carnage, dipping just 1% and holding above $81,600.</p>

<p>Wall Street extends gains on Wednesday, as investors remain resilient in their risk appetite despite the looming announcement of sweeping trade tariffs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">by President <strong>Donald Trump</strong>.</a></p>
<p>The president is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/wgmKYg-zK9o">scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. ET</a> on what he dubbed "Liberation Day," with expectations pointing to the imposition of tariffs around 20% on a broad range of goods.</p>
<p>The <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> is up 0.8%, aiming for what could become its third consecutive positive session. The <strong>Nasdaq 100</strong> is also rebounding strongly, rising 1.1%, while small-cap stocks outperform large caps, with the <strong>Russell 2000</strong> climbing 1.5%.</p>
<p>Nearly all sectors are in the green, except defensive consumer staples. Consumer discretionary and tech lead the way in performance.</p>

<p>Following the worst quarterly performance for U.S. stocks in over two years, caution dominated Wall Street as investors awaited details on the tariff plans expected from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">Trump administration on Wednesday.</a></p>
<p>On Tuesday, a Washington Post report suggested the administration is considering a sweeping 20% tariff on most of the $3 trillion in annual imports.</p>
<p>Survey data showed that goods-producing businesses had been front-loading purchases ahead of the expected tariffs by the end of first quarter, with inventory levels rising and input cost pressures<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44588076/us-manufacturing-slips-into-contraction-as-tariff-driven-costs-hit-near-3-year-high"> hitting a three-year high.</a></p>
<p>Major indexes showed little movement by midday in New York, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting modest gains.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For March 28, 2025

<p>April tends to be a favorable month for U.S. equities, and history makes a compelling case for this. Over the past 95 years, the S&amp;P 500 has gained an average of 1.1% in April, finishing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">higher 61% of the time.</a></p>
<p>In April, the index notched some of its most powerful monthly rallies in history, surging 43.6% in April 1933 and 17.9% in April 2020. Yet, it&#8217;s not always been a smooth ride — the worst April returns were a 20% crash in 1932 and a 9.5% drop in 1970.</p>
<p>Zooming in on the past three decades, April's track record becomes even more convincing. </p>
<p>The <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), the benchmark ETF tracking the S&amp;P 500, delivered an average gain of 1.9% over the last 30 Aprils, making it the second-best month of the year after November. SPY ended April in the green 77% of the time.</p>
<p>That said, 2025 has started on a cautious note. Through March 26, the S&amp;P 500 is down about 3% year-to-date. </p>
<p>Yet history suggests a seasonal tailwind could soon be at play — especially in four specific sectors that have consistently outperformed the broader market in April.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Financials (XLF): Banks Lead The Earnings Charge</h3>
<p>The <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has historically been April&#8217;s top-performing sector. </p>
<p>Since its inception in 1999, XLF has risen an average of 2.7% during the month, with gains coming in 65% of the time. The seasonal strength is largely tied to the first-quarter earnings season, which kicks off in April and is typically led by major banks. Optimism surrounding annual earnings outlooks often provides a boost.</p>
<p>XLF has already outperformed the broader market in 2025, gaining 4.5% year-to-date. Within the sector, <strong>JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>)<strong> </strong>stands out: Over the past 45 years, JPM shares have climbed an average of 2.6% in April, delivering positive returns 68% of the time.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consumer Discretionary (XLY): Big Tech Retailers Deliver Spring Strength</h3>
<p>The <strong>Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) also posted a strong seasonal performance, rising 2.4% on average in April over the last 26 years. It has a 65% winning rate during the month.</p>
<p>April is historically the best month for <strong>Amazon.com Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), with an average gain of 7.6% and a 70% success rate. </p>
<p>Likewise, <strong>Tesla Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a><strong>)</strong> tends to accelerate this time of year, with April returns averaging 5.9%, making it the second-strongest month for the electric vehicle maker, behind only November's 11.9% surge.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Materials (XLB): A Solid Spring For Commodities And Chemicals</h3>
<p>The <strong>Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>) also delivered strong April sector performers. XLB has risen an average of 3.1% in April over the past 26 years, with a 65% win rate. The ETF is up about 3% year-to-date, suggesting some early momentum heading into April.</p>
<p>One heavyweight in the materials space, <strong>Linde plc </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LIN#NYSE">LIN</a>) — which represents roughly 20% of XLB's holdings — has consistently delivered in April. With 32 years of historical data, Linde has averaged a 3.5% gain in the month and ended April in positive territory 69% of the time.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Energy (XLE): The Strongest April Performer</h3>
<p>Energy stocks have historically delivered the most robust gains in April, with the <strong>Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) averaging a 4.1% return and closing the month higher 62% of the time. </p>
<p>Yet, it&#8217;s worth noting that this impressive figure is skewed by an extraordinary rebound in April 2020, when XLE surged nearly 30% following a historic 35% plunge in March 2020 — a period marked by collapsing oil prices and pandemic-driven market chaos. </p>
<p>Looking at long-term leaders within the sector, <strong>Exxon Mobil Corp. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) shares have gained an average of 2.7% in April over the past 40 years, while <strong>Chevron Corp. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) performed slightly better, rising 3.1% on average over the same period. </p>
