The People&#8217;s Bank of China (PBOC) unveiled a series of aggressive measures, including cuts to the reserve requirement ratio (RRR) for banks and a reduction in the seven-day repo rate, following a recent cut to the 14-day reverse repo rate. These moves are expected to inject roughly $140 billion (1 trillion yuan) into the banking system, providing banks with additional liquidity to boost lending.
Chinese equities skyrocketed on the news, with the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) soaring over 8%, marking its largest single-day gain since March 2022. 
Commodities followed suit with copper and silver climbing more than 3% each, while gold rose 0.7%, hitting record highs for the fourth consecutive session.
The Nasdaq 100 posted a 0.5% gain, leading U.S. indices, while the S&amp;P 500 remained nearly flat, hovering just shy of its all-time highs. 
The U.S. dollar weakened by 0.4% following a lower-than-expected September consumer confidence report from the Conference Board. This data has bolstered expectations for a potential 50-basis-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve in November.
Treasury yields fell on short-term maturities, while longer-dated yields held steady. Oil prices climbed 1.2%, though concerns about U.S. demand lingered due to the disappointing consumer confidence figures.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) slipped 0.2% failing to join the China-led rally across other risk assets.

Among major assets, gold continues its upward momentum, setting new all-time highs as investors flock to safe-haven assets amid global uncertainty.

Stocks Edge Lower As Fed Rate Decision Looms, Treasury Yields Rise As Odds Improve For Smaller Cut: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

Wall Street experienced a slightly positive session Tuesday, supported by investor optimism as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) kicked off its two-day meeting, expected to deliver the first interest rate cut in over <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/40878710/investors-bet-on-50-basis-point-rate-cut-wall-street-analysts-urge-caution-this-is-">four years on Wednesday.</a>
The session&#8217;s notable performers were small caps, with the Russell 2000 index surging about 1.3%, targeting its highest close since early August and outperforming larger-cap indices.
Among industries, solar, clean energy and regional banks led gains as traders eyed pockets of the markets that would benefit from lower interest rates.
On the macro front, August retail sales provided an upside surprise, growing by 0.1% month-over-month compared to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/09/40902634/retail-spending-remains-on-solid-footing-but-fed-must-weigh-rate-cuts-impact-on-workers-says-economi">the expected 0.2% decline</a>. This stronger-than-anticipated data slightly reduced the likelihood of a more aggressive 50-basis-point rate cut, with market-implied probabilities for such a move slipping from 67% to 63%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
Short-dated Treasury yields rose as expectations for a substantial rate cut moderated. Meanwhile, the dollar strengthened, gaining 0.2%. 
In the commodities market, gold retreated 0.7% from Monday&#8217;s record-high close. Oil prices increased by 1.3% following escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Should You Invest in the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Health Care ETF?

Investors showed little enthusiasm for the August jobs report, as the slower-than-expected hiring numbers deepened worries about <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/09/40748557/job-creation-falls-short-of-expectations-in-august-unemployment-rate-ticks-lower-">a softening labor market.</a>
The U.S. economy added 142,000 nonfarm jobs in August, up from July's 89,000 but falling short of the projected 160,000. The unemployment rate edged down by 0.1% to 4.3%, in line with expectations, while wages saw stronger-than-anticipated growth, rising 0.4% month-over-month.
On Friday, markets shifted sharply into risk-off mode, with all major indices dropping over 1% by midday trading in New York. 
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) spiked over 17% to 23 points. The Nasdaq 100 led the decline, losing over 5% for the week, eyeing its worst performance since September 2022.
Semiconductors dragged down the tech-heavy index. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) dropped nearly 5%, while Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) fell more than 4%. The chipmaker giant extended the weekly loss to 14%, on track for its steepest decline since October 2022.
Investors dumped equities and moved into cash as the U.S. dollar strengthened despite weaker-than-expected nonfarm payroll data.
In the bond market, short-term Treasury yields tumbled, bringing the yield curve back to a normal shape after two years of inversion. The two-year Treasury yield fell below the 10-year, signaling a shift in economic outlook.
Commodities took heavy losses across the board. Gold dropped 0.9%, silver plunged 3.1% and crude oil (WTI) slid 3%, reaching $66 per barrel, the lowest since May 2023.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also dropped, losing over 3%, as investors steered clear of crypto assets amid a broad-based decline in risk appetite.

Signs of a cooling labor market last month pushed major U.S. stock averages lower on Thursday, ahead of the highly anticipated August jobs report set for release on Friday.
Private sector job creation came in at 99,000 for August, according to ADP data, marking the slowest pace of growth since January 2021 and missing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/09/40728795/private-employment-grows-by-99-000-in-august-sharply-misses-forecasts-of-140-000-">the forecast of 140,000.</a>
A stronger-than-expected services sector activity sentiment for August offered some relief to broader recession concerns, but an employment subindex bolstered hints of the ongoing cooling <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/40732534/services-sector-activity-expands-more-than-expected-in-august-but-employment-growth">in the labor market.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 dropped below the 4,500 support level for the first time since mid-August, extending weekly losses to 2.9%, and is on track for its worst week since mid-April.
Tech stocks managed to pare losses, with semiconductor shares holding steady. Blue-chip stocks underperformed, as the Dow Jones slid 0.8%, while small-cap stocks fell 0.6%.
A decision from OPEC+ to delay an October oil production increase by two months supported crude prices and further pressured already fragile investor sentiment. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stopped its decline after suffering its worst two-day slump since October 2023.
Treasury yields dipped slightly, and the U.S. dollar softened. Meanwhile, gold edged higher by 0.6%.
Natural gas was Thursday's standout performer, with Henry Hub prices surging over 5%. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a natural gas storage injection of 13 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending Aug. 30, significantly below historical averages and expectations.
Sentiment in crypto assets worsened, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) tumbling 3% to $56,170.

Gold is down slightly, off by 0.3%, while oil prices are down 1.2%, with West Texas Intermediate crude projected to close at its lowest levels since early February 2024.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) gained 1% but remains below the $60,000 mark.

Stocks Trim Gains On Slower Jobs Growth, Dollar Falls Ahead Of Fed Minutes; Target Rallies, Macy's Tumbles: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

After eight consecutive positive sessions, Wall Street hit a pause. The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices ended Tuesday&#8217;s session with slight declines, halting their best winning streaks since May 2024 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40450395/s-p-500-nasdaq-100-extend-8-session-winning-streak-as-wall-street-jitters-go-poof-mondays-key-st">and October 2023, respectively.</a>
The day was characterized by a lack of economic data, leading to a significant drop in trading volumes across major U.S. stock exchanges. 
Fed Governor Michelle Bowman delivered hawkish comments in the afternoon, stating that she still sees upside risks to inflation. This did little to improve an already negative session.
Bowman further emphasized that wage gains remain above the pace consistent with the Fed's inflation goal, and stressed the need to remain vigilant on the price-stability side of the Fed&#8217;s mandate while monitoring risks of a material weakening in the labor market.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tuesday&#8217;s Major Drags On S&amp;P 500, Nasdaq 100</h3>
The S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), closed down 0.2%. A similar drop was observed in the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index, as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>).
Sector performance saw three sectors finishing in positive territory and eight in the red:

<li>The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) rose 0.5% </li>

<li>The Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLRE#NYSE">XLRE</a>) edged up by 0.1%.</li>
</ul>
On the downside, energy stocks led the laggards as WTI oil prices fell below $74 per barrel, marking a two-week low. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) dropped 2.6%.
Among individual stocks, Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) was the biggest drag on the S&amp;P 500, falling 2.1% and accounting for a 0.15 percentage point loss in the overall index. Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) was another significant negative contributor, falling 3.4% and shaving off 0.04 percentage points from the S&amp;P 500 performance. 
The worst performers in the S&amp;P 500 were Insulet Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PODD#NASDAQ">PODD</a>) and DexCom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DXCM#NASDAQ">DXCM</a>), which plunged 6.9% and 6.3%, respectively.
In the Nasdaq 100, Nvidia weighed down the index by 0.18 percentage points, followed by Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>), which contributed to a 0.05 percentage point loss. The tech index&#8217;s worst performers were DexCom and China&#8217;s PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>), the latter dropping 4.6%.

S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 Snap 8-Day Winning Streak: What Triggered Wall Street's Setback On Tuesday?

It&#8217;s a relatively uneventful session on Wall Street, but with a slightly worsening risk sentiment as all U.S. equity indices traded in the red at around midday trading in New York. If the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 close lower today, it will break their current eight-day winning streak, a run that has nearly erased the losses <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40450395/s-p-500-nasdaq-100-extend-8-session-winning-streak-as-wall-street-jitters-go-poof-mondays-key-st">sustained earlier this month.</a>
Traders remain cautious as they await key economic events later this week. On Wednesday morning, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its &#8220;2024 Preliminary Benchmark Revision to Establishment Data,&#8221; which will include non-farm payroll revisions covering the period from April 2023 to March 2024.
Later in the day, at 2 p.m. E.T., the Federal Reserve will release the minutes from the July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.
The Jackson Hole Symposium kicks off on Thursday, where Fed officials are expected to make headlines during media interviews. On Friday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell will take center stage<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/08/40466528/jackson-hole-preview-5-important-questions-ahead-of-jerome-powells-fed-speech"> with a live address at 10:00 a.m. ET.</a>
Small caps underperformed large cap on Tuesday, and nine out of 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors were in negative territory, with the exclusion of healthcare and consumer staples.
A measure of the U.S. dollar fell 0.4%, tumbling to the lowest level since late December 2023. The Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) is experiencing its worst three-day performance year-to-date.
Treasury yields also fell, with more significant declines at the long end of the curve. The long-dated iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 0.8%, poised for its third consecutive session in the green and the seventh in the last eight.
Meanwhile, gold remained steady at record-high levels of $2,500 per ounce, while oil prices declined by another 0.5%, marking their third straight drop. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) slipped 1.2% to $58,755.

The Democratic National Convention kicks off Monday in Chicago and includes a highly anticipated speech from President Joe Biden, who stepped aside from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/2024-election">2024 presidential election. &nbsp;</a>
Here's a look at Monday's key speakers and what investors should know.
Biden's Speech: Biden will headline the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/08/40429245/2024-dnc-preview-democrats-to-rally-around-harris-walz-with-biden-obamas-clintons-and-more-will-">first night of the DNC</a> with a primetime speech emphasizing why Vice President Kamala Harris is fit to be president.
One of the themes of Biden&#8217;s speech is expected to be leadership and putting America above the president's own interest, the Democratic convention committee said in a statement viewed by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/19/dnc-2024-live-updates-day-1.html">CNBC</a>.
"While Donald Trump puts himself first, Democrats are fighting for the American people," the Democratic convention committee said.
First Lady Jill Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are also set to deliver prime time speeches Monday, as reported by CNBC.
The Bidens will leave Chicago Monday night for a vacation in California, according to the report. The president will not be on hand for a speech from former President Barack Obama or to officially see Harris accept the nomination on Thursday.

Auto Stocks, Abortion, Health Care In Spotlight At DNC: Joe Biden, UAW President, Women Affected By Roe V. Wade Decision Headline Night 1

Institutional investors seized the early August market volatility as an opportunity to purchase discounted stocks and equity ETFs, according to a Tuesday <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color">Bank of America note</a>.
Earlier this month, the S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), dropped more than 8% from its July 16 high, while the Nasdaq 100, heavily weighted in tech stocks, plunged over 10%, officially entering correction territory.
The CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, commonly referred to as the market fear gauge, skyrocketed to above 60 points, marking the highest surge since March 2020. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Major Inflows After Market Slump</h3>
Despite the volatility, last week saw a significant shift in market sentiment. Bank of America Securities clients were net buyers of U.S. equities, with inflows totaling $5.8 billion—the first net positive in five weeks and the 10th-largest inflow recorded since 2008.
These inflows were spread across single stocks and equity ETFs, with single stocks seeing larger allocations. Remarkably, all market caps—large, mid, and small—experienced positive inflows.
Pullbacks of 5% or more are relatively common, occurring more than three times a year on average since 1930, according to Bank of America. Corrections of 10% or more typically occur once per year, with the most recent one being in the fall of 2023.
Historically, since 1930, there have been 98 corrections of 10% or more, but the S&amp;P 500 has still managed to deliver nearly 25,000% in total returns over that period, the analysts said. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tech, Communication Services Lead Inflows</h3>
Tech and communication services stocks led the charge in inflows, a trend consistent with cumulative data year-to-date.
Communication services stocks have maintained the longest buying streak, now at 19 consecutive weeks, while tech stocks saw inflows for the first time in four weeks.
Seven of the 11 sectors recorded net inflows last week. Financials, which had their largest inflows since April, were the second-most purchased after TMT (Technology, Media, and Telecommunications) stocks. 
On the other hand, investors sold off Energy, Staples, Real Estate, and Utilities stocks. Energy stocks, in particular, have now seen three consecutive weeks of outflows, the longest current selling streak among sectors. Industrials, which had been on a four-week selling streak, experienced their largest inflows since March.
ETF inflows were strong across all investment styles — growth, value and blend — as well as across large-cap and broad market ETFs. However, small- and mid-cap ETFs faced outflows.
Consistent with single-stock activity, tech ETFs, such as the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), attracted the largest inflows, while health care ETFs, such as the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) saw the most significant outflows.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Challenges of Market Timing</h3>
Bank of America emphasized the difficulty of timing the market&#8217;s ups and downs. The probability of losing money in the S&amp;P 500 over a single day is close to 50% (46%), but this probability drops to just 5% over a 10-year horizon, according to data going back to 1929.
The challenge of market timing is further highlighted by historical data: since the 1930s, an investor who missed the 10 best trading days per decade would have seen returns of just 76%, compared to the nearly 25,000% return from staying invested throughout. 
&#8220;Panic selling can be a bad idea, as the best days often follow the worst days,&#8221; analysts at Bank of America wrote.

Gold also attracted safe-haven demand, rising 1.5% and nearing all-time highs, now just 0.6% away.

Since the beginning of the week, the S&amp;P 500 is down 0.5%, with a few hours of trading left to determine whether the U.S. stock market can avoid closing in the red for the fourth consecutive week.
Meanwhile, there's a renewed demand for long-dated U.S. Treasury bonds, with yields declining by about 6 basis points on both the 10-year and 30-year notes. As a result, the popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rallied 1%, snapping a three-session losing streak.
The dollar slightly weakened, slipping 0.5% against the Japanese yen after three consecutive days of gains.

Weekly jobless claims numbers, which came in at 233,000 last week — a significant drop from the previous 250,000 and below the expected 240,000 — <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/24/08/40251833/weekly-unemployment-claims-decline-more-than-expected-cool-recession-concerns-stocks-r">helped ease recession fears. </a>
Additionally, the notable decline in weekly claims in Texas suggests that a one-off event like Hurricane Beryl might have contributed to the increase in claims and the July unemployment rate, thus alleviating fears of a more structural trend.
Technology stocks are leading the charge, with the Nasdaq 100 showcasing a 2.2% rally. Among tech stocks, semiconductors are shining, with AI-linked trade back on track after significant <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40259139/tech-stocks-rally-after-5-day-slump-as-recession-panic-eases-nasdaq-100-movers-to-watch-thursday">sell-offs in recent days.</a>
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) rallied 5.7%, returning above its 200-day moving average after falling below it last Friday. Industrial, consumer discretionary and energy stocks are also posting significant gains.
The dollar continues its recovery against the Japanese yen after being hit by the unwinding of the carry trade until Monday. The dollar-yen exchange rate is looking at its third consecutive day of gains, continuing to reflect the dovish remarks made by the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/08/40223986/traders-resume-yen-dollar-carry-trade-as-bank-of-japan-pledges-no-rate-hikes-during-market-volatilit">Bank of Japan on Wednesday.</a>
Bonds, which alongside the yen were favored during past sessions marked by recession fears, are now retracing as yields rise across the Treasury curve. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) tumbled by 0.8% on Thursday, eyeing its third straight session of declines. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note surged by 5 basis points to 4%.
Commodities are showing solid gains, with gold and silver up by 1.5% and 3.5%, respectively. Oil is up 0.8%, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude returning above the $75 per barrel level.
Cryptocurrencies are soaring, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) posting a 7.9% daily gain, on track for its best session in about three months.

Wall Street Rallies As Economic Concerns Recede, Tech Flexes Its Muscles, Semiconductors Soar: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

The U.S. stock market is poised for its second consecutive day of gains, aiming to reverse the sell-off that occurred through Monday as investors assess the ongoing earnings season and welcome reassuring comments<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/08/40223986/traders-resume-yen-dollar-carry-trade-as-bank-of-japan-pledges-no-rate-hikes-during-market-volatilit"> from the Bank of Japan.</a>
Deputy Gov. Shinichi Uchida stated the central bank will avoid raising interest rates during times of market volatility, easing fears sparked last week by a rate hike from the Bank of Japan coupled with growing concerns about a potential U.S. recession.
The U.S. dollar surged 2% against the Japanese yen, marking its largest one-day increase since June 2022 and reigniting trader interest in the yen-dollar carry trade strategy.
Both the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 were 1% by midday trading in New York. The Dow Jones and the Russell 2000 notched smaller gains, up 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively. 
Treasury yields rose again by about 5 basis points across the curve, sending bond-related assets down. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) fell 0.4% after tumbling 2.2% on Tuesday.
Oil shined among commodities, with the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude soaring 3.6% to $75 a barrel, after the Energy Information Administration report showed a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude oil inventories last week. Natural gas prices were also up by over 4% amid forecasts of warmer weather leading speculators to expect higher electricity consumption for cooling. As a result, energy stocks rallied.
Gold inched 0.2% higher, while silver slightly eased by 0.1%. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was flat for the day.

Wall Street Poised For Second Day Of Gains While Bank Of Japan Makes Reassurances; Dollar Strengthens Against Yen, Crude Prices Surge: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

The chart of the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) offers two valuable <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/technical-analysis">technical analysis lessons.</a>
Technical analysis has a dubious reputation. Unfortunately, it is probably well-deserved.
Many analysts mindlessly attempt to identify patterns on charts without having an understanding of the price action that makes these patterns form. Even worse, some are proponents of bizzare techniques and methods that should be in the realm of science fiction instead of legitimate market analysis.
This is unfortunate because if understood and applied correctly, technical analysis is a study of market psychology and supply and demand dynamics, which can lead to profits.
Regardless of the security being analyzed, the same patterns appear on their charts. It could be a stock, a crypto, an ETF, a bond, a foreign currency, etc…
This is because the emotions and psychology of the traders in these various securities are reflected in the charts.
As you can see on the chart of XLV, levels around $147.00 were resistance in May and June. But in July this resistance was broken and the shares moved higher.

Then there was some selling and profit-taking which pushed the price lower. And as you can also see that when this happened, the $147.00 level turned into support.
Resistance converting into support is a common occurrence in the financial markets. It is because many of the traders and investors who sold while the shares were at resistance came to regret their decision to do so when the price eventually moved higher.
Many of these remorseful sellers decided they made a mistake and vowed to buy their shares back.
But they will only do so if they can get them for the same price they were sold at. So, when the price returns to the level that had previously been resistance, they place buy orders. If there are enough of these orders it will convert what was resistance into support.
That is what happened at the $147.00 level with XLV.
Another lesson the chart offers is the &#8220;higher low.&#8221; Markets rarely go in straight lines. They tend to form a series of peaks and valleys. When the valley forms at a higher price than the previous one, traders say it is a &#8220;higher low.&#8221;
This is an illustration of buyers becoming more aggressive. As time passes, they are willing to pay higher prices.
When a market reaches a resistance level, like <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/XLV">XLV</a> did in July, traders can gain insight into whether or not the resistance will break by looking for higher lows. If they did occur within the trend before it reached resistance, there is a good chance the resistance will break.
As time has passed, the buyers have become increasingly aggressive and this could be a setup for a move higher. Every chart can provide valuable lessons in technical analysis when traders recognize that they reflect market psychology and supply and demand dynamics.

Stock Of The Day: XLV Shatters Resistance Barrier, Establishes New Support Level

U.S. stock markets saw a strong recovery on Tuesday, with both the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 climbing over 2%, nearly offsetting Monday&#8217;s losses. Investors took advantage of recent volatility to buy the dip, showing continued confidence in the U.S. economy&#8217;s ability to avoid a recession. 
Gains were observed in both small-cap and blue-chip stocks, reflecting broad improvement in market sentiment.
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often referred to as the market&#8217;s fear gauge, decreased by almost 40% on Tuesday after spiking 65% on Monday. 
According to the FedWatch Tool, the likelihood of a 50-basis-point interest rate cut decreased to 90% Monday to 64% Tuesday. 
As traders reassess Fed rate cuts, Treasury yields increased during the day, with the 10-year yield rising by 11 basis points to 3.9% and the two-year yield climbing 9 basis points to 4.01%.
The rebound of the U.S. dollar was supported by rising yields and diminished expectations of a larger Federal Reserve rate cut in September. The dollar increased by 0.8% against the low-yielding Japanese yen, breaking a streak of five consecutive days of losses.
In terms of macroeconomic data, the day was relatively quiet, with only June&#8217;s trade figures making news. The U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $73.1 billion in June 2024 from a revised 20-month high of $75 billion in May, slightly above market forecasts of a $72.5-billion gap. Exports increased by 1.5% to $265.9 billion, the second-highest on record, while imports grew by a more modest 0.6% to $339 billion.
Gold and oil prices both decreased by 0.7% and 0.8%, respectively, marking their fourth consecutive session of declines.
