Shares of communication equipment stocks are trading higher following President Trump's decision to implement a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China.

Rosenblatt analyst Mike Genovese upgraded Coherent Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COHR#NYSE">COHR</a>) from Neutral to Buy and lowered the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/COHR/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">price target from</a> $115 to $85 on Friday.
Genovese is upbeat on sequential re-acceleration in AI transceivers by the second half of calendar 2025, driven by the Blackwell rollout and Coherent ZR transceiver demand for Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and telecom application that is very strong.
The analyst is bullish on the transceiver market through 2030 and increasingly views co-packaged optics (CPO) as more of an opportunity than a threat because of new products like Ultra-High-Power (UHP) lasers and Optical Circuit Switches (OCS).

Investors are now openly discussing Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/04/44645946/microsoft-halts-data-center-expansions-due-to-semiconductor-tariff-concerns-ai-overcapacity-fears" rel="noreferrer noopener">delaying some new</a> Data Center builds.
Nevertheless, the analyst expects Coherent&#8217;s and the overall market&#8217;s 800G Datacom transceiver sales to accelerate in the September and December quarters, driven by attachments to shipments of Blackwell GPUs ordered in the first half of 2025.
In the second quarter of 2025, Coherent&#8217;s Telecom revenues grew 11% year over year, following 17% year over year growth in the first quarter of 2025.
The company noted the strong ramp of new products and said it expects these products to continue to grow over the coming quarters.
Coherent management echoed these sentiments when Genovese met with them this week at OFC.
In addition, Ciena Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CIEN#NYSE">CIEN</a>) and Cisco Systems, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CSCO#NASDAQ">CSCO</a>) said that the demand for Hyper-Scale DCI remains incredibly strong at OFC this week. However, any chatter investors hear about Microsoft, in particular, slowing down on some new Data Center investments.
At the OFC meeting, Coherent said it has the vendor&#8217;s most extensive portfolio of CPO components. The company also said CPO equipment is currently 2 to 4 times more expensive than transceiver equipment since it is new and esoteric. Coherent told the analyst it is participating in OCS deployments this year at a significant Hyper Scaler and is engaged in similar planning and bids with others.
According to the analyst&#8217;s checks, Lumentum Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LITE#NASDAQ">LITE</a>) is still significantly ahead in EML capacity, but Coherent is finally getting close to ramping up its own EML production.
Genovese is confident that Coherent can expand its production of indium phosphide lasers, including EMLs and CWs, over time.
Coherent has manufacturing locations around the world, including Malaysia (24% tariff), China (54% tariff), other Asian countries (tariff rates mostly between Malaysia and China), and Europe (20% tariff).
Genovese projected third-quarter revenue of $1.44 billion and EPS of 85 cents.

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/628b6bab3547bd000104dc00/mike-genovese">Analyst Mike Genovese</a> reaffirmed a Neutral rating while cutting the price target from $79 to $73.
Ciena's healthy quarterly results were highlighted by strong orders, backlog build and gross margins, Genovese said. He added that the company's revenue guidance for the fiscal second quarter was not as strong as the beat.
Management maintained the full-year gross margin guidance at 42%-44% despite the first-quarter gross margins of 44.7%, which exceeded consensus by 270 basis points, the analyst stated.
The Street seemed to be concerned about the impact of tariffs and "demand destruction" from a potential recession this year, he further wrote.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Stifel On Ciena</h1>
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/58ad935ab85e930001f97192/ruben-roy">Analyst Ruben Roy</a> reiterated a Buy rating and price target of $95.
Ciena reported strong results across the board, Roy said. The company's order momentum continued, with direct orders from cloud service providers representing over 50% of overall orders during the quarter, he added.
With SP revenues growing 14% in the first quarter, "We continue to believe that CIEN is the best way to play our expectations for a continued SP recovery over the next 12-18 months," the analyst wrote. 
Management indicated that its guidance could be missed depending on "the outcome of proposed tariffs," he further stated.

Wall Street's losing streak extended into Tuesday, with stocks deepening their slump as continued trade war fears rattled investor sentiment. 
The Nasdaq 100 slipped 0.6% by midday trading in New York after suffering on Monday its worst single-day drop since September 2022<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44255030/nasdaq-100-trades-below-its-200-day-moving-average-history-says-you-should-buy-the-dip-now"> in the prior session. </a>
The broader S&amp;P 500 slid to a seven-month low, amplifying concerns over the market's near-term trajectory.
The proportion of S&amp;P 500 stocks trading above their 200-day moving average has now shrunk to 44%, the lowest since November 2023. Each sector traded in the red, highlighting broad-based market weakness. 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was the biggest underperformer on Tuesday, with industrial stocks bearing the brunt of escalating trade tensions.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump escalated trade tensions by raising tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports to 50%, responding to Ontario's move to levy a 25% tariff on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44253100/trump-slaps-50-tariff-on-canadian-steel-aluminum-threatens-auto-industry">electricity exports to the U.S. </a>
In a Truth Social post, Trump announced he had instructed the Commerce secretary to enforce the additional 25% tariff, which will take effect Wednesday morning.
On the macroeconomic front, job openings in the U.S. showed unexpected resilience, rising by 232,000 to 7.74 million in January from a downwardly revised 7.51 million in December. The reading exceeded market forecasts of 7.63 million, suggesting positive labor market news despite broader economic jitters.
The U.S. dollar continued its descent, with the dollar index slipping to six-month lows. Treasury yields edged higher ahead of Wednesday's closely watched inflation report for February, signaling that investors were not rushing into safe-haven bonds despite the ongoing market turbulence.
Commodities, meanwhile, found favor as investors sought inflation hedges. Gold advanced 1%, silver surged 2.3% and copper climbed 3%, reflecting renewed demand for tangible assets in a climate of heightened financial instability.
Bitcoin endured a wild session, initially plunging to an intraday low of $76,600 — its lowest level since Nov. 10, 2024 — before rebounding to post a 3.9% gain on the day.

Margins:&nbsp;The adjusted gross margin declined by 100 bps to 44.7%, and the adjusted operating margin decreased by 90 bps to 12.3%. Two 10%-plus customers represented a total of 26.1% of revenue.
Ciena held $1.32 billion in cash and equivalents and generated $103.7 million in operating cash flow.
During the quarter, the company bought back approximately 1.0 million shares of common stock for an aggregate price of $79.2 million.
CEO Gary Smith said that Ciena is well-positioned to benefit from the global investment in networks that scale for cloud and AI.
Ciena stock surged over 27% in the last 12 months.
