Stock market expert Jon Erlichman recently shared a review of stock returns during the last six U.S. recessions, highlighting those that have performed well in difficult times.
In a video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Lm9FH-c70">post</a> and also on X, Erlichman shared his analysis of stock returns during the past six recessions in the U.S.
&#8220;The Great Recession, which was longer from 2007 to 2009. We added in the dot-com recession, the recession in the early 90s, and the recessions in the early 80s. So you look at that, you start to get a better sample size,&#8221; he said.

In alphabetical order, he mentioned about stock number one, AutoZone (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AZO#NYSE">AZO</a>). He said that AutoZone is a great example of a stock that has done well during past recessions. Stock number two was Clorox (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>). He said that Clorox is a great example of a stock that did well during the last recession.

That&#8217;s not great for retailers, but Walmart executives have already come out,&#8221; he said in the post.

The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) has raised concerns over the impact of newly enacted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44269301/trumps-25-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum-imports-take-effect-eu-retaliates-us-steel-nucor-century-aluminum-and-other-domestic-stocks-cheer">steel and aluminum tariffs</a>.
What Happened: The CMI warns that tariffs will have an inflationary influence on the domestic can industry. 
The Trump administration argues that these measures would protect domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign metals. But manufacturers say they will raise costs and harm competitiveness.
"While we support President Donald Trump's efforts to address unfair trade practices, tariffs on steel and aluminum will increase prices for canned foods and beverages," CMI's president Robet Budway <a href="https://www.cancentral.com/can-manufacturers-respond-to-trump-232-tariffs-steel-aluminum/">said</a> in a statement.
Per the Aluminum Association, Canada provides nearly two-thirds of the <a href="https://www.aluminum.org/news/us-aluminum-industry-responds-232-implementation-calls-certainty-tariff-landscape">domestically used aluminum</a>, while Mexico is the third-largest supplier. The new tariffs apply to all non-USMCA-compliant imports. Even compliant goods from Canada and Mexico will be subject to tariffs starting April 2. Additionally, China faces separate 20% tariffs on its aluminum exports to the U.S.
The U.S. can-making industry produces around 135 million cans annually, employing over 28,000 workers across 33 states. Nine domestic mill production lines have closed since the original 2018 tariffs on tin mill steel. That leaves only three operational facilities. CMI warns that domestic production cannot meet the demand, forcing manufacturers to rely on imports.
Numerous large companies rely on aluminum cans for manufacturing, particularly in the beverage, food, and aerosol industries. They include Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>), Campbell Soup  (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), and Clorox (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>).

Why It Matters: The situation will likely get worse for manufacturers, according to Japanese bank Nomura. 
The firm published a special report evaluating the effects of these tariffs. The firm estimated that the effective tariff rate on total U.S. imports will rise from 2.4% in 2024 to 10.1% in 2025 due to the expanded scope of trade restrictions. 
Furthermore, it warned about the retaliatory measures from key trading partners, particularly the European Union, which are likely in the coming months.
Nomura anticipates that while the current tariffs are 25%, the cumulative tariff rate on targeted steel and aluminum products could climb as high as 35% once additional country-specific penalties are layered. This would further strain industries reliant on these materials, including can manufacturing.
To prevent this outcome, CMI has called for targeted tariff relief to ensure the competitiveness of U.S.-made canned goods.
"Aluminum and steel tariffs place price pressures on American-produced goods by artificially and dramatically increasing the cost of critical production materials, making U.S.-made food less competitive against foreign products. We are calling on President Trump to provide targeted tariff relief, ensuring steel and aluminum cans and the products packaged in those cans continue to be ‘Made in America.'"

Clorox shares are trading lower following Q2 financial results.

Clorox Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>) reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CLX/earnings">Monday after the bell</a>.
Clorox reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $1.69 billion, beating the consensus estimate of $1.63 billion, according to Benzinga Pro. The household consumer products company reported adjusted earnings of $1.55 per share, beating analyst estimates of $1.41 per share.
"We achieved better-than-expected results across sales, margin and EPS in the second quarter due to our strong demand creation plans, which also supported our share growth," said Linda Rendle, chair and CEO of Clorox. "We are further advancing our transformation as we embark upon a significant milestone with our Enterprise Resource Planning transition in the U.S., resulting in our updated outlook. I am confident that we are taking the right actions to deliver strong financial performance and long-term, profitable growth."
Clorox raised its full-year earnings forecast from a range of $6.65 to $6.90 per share to a new range of $6.95 to $7.35 per share versus estimates of $6.84 per share. The company also guided for 2025 net sales in a range of down 1% to up 2%.
Clorox shares fell 6.6% to trade at $149.19 on Tuesday.

Clorox Co.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/02/43450398/clorox-stock-slides-on-q2-earnings">second-quarter</a> earnings and revenue exceeded expectations, however, its net sales declined 15% annually. The management reinstated confidence in its fourth-quarter forecast expecting mid-to-high-single-digit growth in organic sales driven by the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation.
What Happened: ERP refers to a software system upgrade that Clorox is implementing to modernize its core business processes, including supply chain, finance, and other operational areas. The transition is expected to be completed in phases over six months.
During its earnings call the company CEO Linda Rendle said, &#8220;ERP transition is a very important step in our digital transformation, continuing to ensure that we have data and can move at the right speed with the right capabilities to enable the growth and productivity that we&#8217;re driving.&#8221;
While the company guided its third-quarter organic sales to be up low-single digits, with an impact from divestitures and forex, CFO Kevin Jacobsen said, &#8220;The ERP transition will add 1 to 2 points of growth over the course of the year, it&#8217;s all going to happen in Q4.&#8221;

Why It Matters: Clorox exceeded analysts&#8217; expectations, reporting revenue of $1.69 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.55 per share. Despite a 15% decline in year-over-year net sales, the company improved its gross margin to 43.8% and increased operating cash flow to $401 million.
Clorox anticipates being at the higher end of its 11-13% free cash flow target as a percentage of sales before the ERP impact. The ERP implementation will likely bring it closer to the low end of the range due to inventory build and pre-paying suppliers.
Price Action: Shares of Clorox rose 0.69% to end Monday at $159.78 apiece. The exchange-traded fund tracking the S&amp;P 500 index, SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) declined 0.67% to $597.77 on Monday.
The average price target among 22 analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CLX/analyst-ratings">tracked by Benzinga</a> is $151.4 with a ‘sell' rating. The estimates range from $120 to $187 apiece. Recent ratings from RBC Capital, Barclays, and JP Morgan suggest a $150.33 target, implying a potential downside of 3.34%.

Clorox Beats Expectations Despite 15% Sales Drop, CEO Stays Confident In Q4 Growth

Clorox Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>) reported second-quarter financial results Monday after the bell. Here&#8217;s a rundown <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/n43448785/clorox-reports-q2-fiscal-year-2025-results-updates-outlook">of the report</a>.
Q2 Earnings: Clorox reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $1.69 billion, beating the consensus estimate of $1.63 billion, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>. The household consumer products company reported adjusted earnings of $1.55 per share, beating analyst estimates of $1.41 per share.
Clorox said net sales decreased 15% on a year-over-year basis. Health and Wellness sales fell 13%, Household sales decreased 11%, Lifestyle sales were down 16% and International sales fell 12%. 
Gross margin increased 30 basis points to&nbsp;43.8%, up from&nbsp;43.5%&nbsp;in the prior year&#8217;s quarter. Net cash provided by operations year-to-date came in at $401 million, up from $173 million year-over-year. 
Clorox ended the period with $290 million of cash and cash equivalents. 
&#8220;We achieved better-than-expected results across sales, margin and EPS in the&nbsp;second quarter&nbsp;due to our strong demand creation plans, which also supported our share growth,&#8221; said&nbsp;Linda Rendle, chair and CEO of Clorox.
&#8220;We are further advancing our transformation as we embark upon a significant milestone with our Enterprise Resource Planning transition in the U.S., resulting in our updated outlook. I am confident that we are taking the right actions to deliver strong financial performance and long-term, profitable growth.&#8221;
Outlook: Clorox raised its full-year earnings forecast from a range of $6.65 to $6.90 per share to a new range of $6.95 to $7.35 per share versus estimates of $6.84 per share. The company also guided for 2025 net sales in a range of down 1% to up 2%. 
CLX Price Action: <a href="http://benzinga.com/quote/clx">Clorox shares</a> were down 2.28% after-hours, trading at $155.13 at the time of publication Monday, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.

Fiscal Year 2025 Outlook
This fiscal year 2025 outlook does not include any potential impact from tariffs.
The company is&nbsp;updating the following elements of its fiscal year 2025 outlook:
<ul>
<li>The company now expects net sales to be down 1% to up 2%, including 1 to 2 points of benefit from incremental shipments related to the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) transition, which is expected to reverse in the front half of the next fiscal year. Organic sales are now expected to be up 4% to up 7%, excluding about 2 points of negative impact from the divestiture of the company's business in Argentina and about 3 points of negative impact from the divestiture of the VMS business. Excluding the incremental shipments related to the ERP transition, the company continues to expect organic sales to be up 3% to 5%.</li>
<li>Gross margin is now expected to be up 125 to 150 basis points, primarily due to the benefits of holistic margin management efforts, partially offset by cost inflation and higher trade promotion spending. This compares to the previous expectation of 100 to 150 basis points.</li>
<li>The company's effective tax rate is now expected to be about 26%. Excluding the impact of the VMS sale, the company expects its fiscal year adjusted effective tax rate to be about 23%.</li>
<li>Fiscal year diluted EPS is now expected to be between $5.52 and $5.92 versus previously $5.17 and $5.42, a year over year increase of 145% to 163%, respectively, reflecting the lapping of several one-time charges recorded in the year-ago period. This includes the profit from incremental shipments related to the ERP transition of 25 cents to 45 cents, which is expected to reverse in the front half of fiscal year 2026.</li>
<li>Adjusted EPS is now expected to be between $6.95 and $7.35 compared to the previous estimate of $6.65 and $6.90, a year over year increase of 13% to 19%, respectively. The main change is to reflect a 25 to 45 cent net benefit from the expected incremental shipments related to the company's ERP transition. Aside from this change, adjusted EPS also assumes lower input costs and a lower tax rate as compared to the previous outlook. Adjusted EPS excludes about 70 cents of expense from long-term strategic investments in digital capabilities and productivity enhancements, a 94 cent charge in the first quarter from the loss on sale related to the divestiture of the VMS business, and a 21 cent benefit from cyberattack insurance recoveries in the first half of this fiscal year.</li>
</ul>
The company is confirming the following elements of its fiscal year 2025 outlook:

<li>Selling and administrative expenses continue to be expected to be between 15% to 16% of net sales, which includes about 150 basis points of impact from the company's strategic investments in digital capabilities and productivity enhancements.</li>
<li>Advertising and sales promotion spending is still expected to be 11% to 11.5% of net sales, reflecting the company's ongoing commitment to invest behind its brands.</li>
