Outside its namesake, its brands include Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish, Snyder's of Hanover, Swanson, Pacific Foods, Prego, Pace, V8, and recently acquired Rao's (a deal that closed in March 2024). Around 90% of its revenue results from the US and the remainder from Canada and Latin America.

The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) has raised concerns over the impact of newly enacted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44269301/trumps-25-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum-imports-take-effect-eu-retaliates-us-steel-nucor-century-aluminum-and-other-domestic-stocks-cheer">steel and aluminum tariffs</a>.
What Happened: The CMI warns that tariffs will have an inflationary influence on the domestic can industry. 
The Trump administration argues that these measures would protect domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign metals. But manufacturers say they will raise costs and harm competitiveness.
"While we support President Donald Trump's efforts to address unfair trade practices, tariffs on steel and aluminum will increase prices for canned foods and beverages," CMI's president Robet Budway <a href="https://www.cancentral.com/can-manufacturers-respond-to-trump-232-tariffs-steel-aluminum/">said</a> in a statement.
Per the Aluminum Association, Canada provides nearly two-thirds of the <a href="https://www.aluminum.org/news/us-aluminum-industry-responds-232-implementation-calls-certainty-tariff-landscape">domestically used aluminum</a>, while Mexico is the third-largest supplier. The new tariffs apply to all non-USMCA-compliant imports. Even compliant goods from Canada and Mexico will be subject to tariffs starting April 2. Additionally, China faces separate 20% tariffs on its aluminum exports to the U.S.
The U.S. can-making industry produces around 135 million cans annually, employing over 28,000 workers across 33 states. Nine domestic mill production lines have closed since the original 2018 tariffs on tin mill steel. That leaves only three operational facilities. CMI warns that domestic production cannot meet the demand, forcing manufacturers to rely on imports.
Numerous large companies rely on aluminum cans for manufacturing, particularly in the beverage, food, and aerosol industries. They include Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>), Campbell Soup  (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), and Clorox (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLX#NYSE">CLX</a>).

Why It Matters: The situation will likely get worse for manufacturers, according to Japanese bank Nomura. 
The firm published a special report evaluating the effects of these tariffs. The firm estimated that the effective tariff rate on total U.S. imports will rise from 2.4% in 2024 to 10.1% in 2025 due to the expanded scope of trade restrictions. 
Furthermore, it warned about the retaliatory measures from key trading partners, particularly the European Union, which are likely in the coming months.
Nomura anticipates that while the current tariffs are 25%, the cumulative tariff rate on targeted steel and aluminum products could climb as high as 35% once additional country-specific penalties are layered. This would further strain industries reliant on these materials, including can manufacturing.
To prevent this outcome, CMI has called for targeted tariff relief to ensure the competitiveness of U.S.-made canned goods.
"Aluminum and steel tariffs place price pressures on American-produced goods by artificially and dramatically increasing the cost of critical production materials, making U.S.-made food less competitive against foreign products. We are calling on President Trump to provide targeted tariff relief, ensuring steel and aluminum cans and the products packaged in those cans continue to be ‘Made in America.'"

U.S. stocks were lower, with the Nasdaq Composite falling around 650 points on Monday.
Shares of Redfin Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDFN#NASDAQ">RDFN</a>) rose sharply during Monday's session after Rocket Companies announced it will acquire the company in an all-stock transaction valued at $12.50 per share.
Under the terms of the agreement, Redfin shareholders will receive 0.7926 shares of Rocket Class A common stock for each Redfin share—a 63% premium over Redfin&#8217;s 30-day volume-weighted average price. Rocket shareholders will own approximately 95% of the combined company upon completion, with Redfin shareholders holding the remaining 5%.
Redfin shares jumped 70% to $9.89 on Monday.

<li>Trevi Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRVI#NASDAQ">TRVI</a>) surged 41.8% to $6.10 after the company reported topline results from its Phase 2a RIVER trial of Haduvio for RCC, which met the primary endpoint.</li>
<li>Protagonist Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PTGX#NASDAQ">PTGX</a>) rose 41% to $54.08 after the company announced topline results from its Phase 2b ANTHEM-UC study of icotrokinra in ulcerative colitis. The study met its primary endpoint in all dose groups evaluated.</li>
<li>LZ Technology Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LZMH#NASDAQ">LZMH</a>) gained 17.7% to $14.18.</li>

Shares of consumer staples stocks are trading higher. Strength in the sector may be due to defensive rotation as investors assess tariff uncertainty and recent economic data.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Nik Modi reiterated the Sector Perform rating on Campbell&#8217;s Co (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NASDAQ">CPB</a>), lowering the price forecast to $44 from $51.
Yesterday, the company reported second-quarter sales growth of 9% to $2.685 billion, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44140506/campbells-stocks-fall-on-q2-sales-miss-and-gloomy-outlook" rel="noreferrer noopener">missing the analyst&nbsp;consensus estimate of $2.74 billion.</a>
For FY25, Campbell&nbsp;sees net sales growth of 6% to 8% (prior view: 9%&nbsp;to&nbsp;11%). Adjusted EBIT growth&nbsp;of 3% to 5% (previous view: 9%&nbsp;to&nbsp;11%).
Modi suggests that while Campbell&#8217;s challenging results and full-year guidance cut were anticipated, the company made a wise decision to address these issues upfront, allowing them to focus on performance improvements despite ongoing macro and consumer challenges.

Additionally, Campbell&#8217;s Company is considered undervalued compared to its peers and historical performance, though the analyst stresses that further efforts are needed before the stock can see positive movement.
The analyst states in response to F2Q results, estimates were adjusted for FY25 net sales growth to +6.7% (prior view: +9.2%), organic sales growth to -1.2% (prior view: +0.4%), EBIT growth to +9.2% (prior view: from +3.2%) and EPS to $2.99 (prior view: $3.17).
Per the analyst, lowering the full-year guidance was the right move, but due to the fluid environment, Modi remains cautious and slightly below the midpoint of the company&#8217;s top-line guidance, anticipating consumer sentiment could &#8220;soften&#8221; further.

Canned soup products maker The Campbell&#8217;s Company (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NASDAQ">CPB</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading lower in premarket</a> on Wednesday.
The company reported second-quarter sales growth of 9% to $2.685 billion, missing the analyst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/b44137989/campbells-reports-second-quarter-fiscal-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of $2.74 billion.</a>
The increase was driven by the benefit from the Sovos Brands acquisition. Organic net sales decreased 2% to $2.4 billion, driven by net price realization with flat volume/mix.
Meals &amp; Beverages net sales in the quarter increased&nbsp;21%,&nbsp;driven by the benefit of the acquisition. Snacks net sales in the quarter decreased&nbsp;6%.
Gross margin contracted 110 basis points Y/Y to 30.5%. Adjusted EBIT of $372 million increased by 2% Y/Y.
Adjusted EPS of $0.74 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the consensus estimate of $0.72.</a>

The company held $829 million in cash and equivalents as of January 26, 2025. Operating cash flow for six months totaled $737 million.
The company has paid $227 million of cash dividends and repurchased common stock of approximately $56 million year-to-date.
As of the end of the second quarter, Campbell had about $205 million remaining under its anti-dilutive share repurchase program in addition to approximately $301 million remaining under its September 2021 strategic share repurchase program.
Through the second quarter, Campbell&#8217;s has delivered about $65 million of savings under the $250 million cost savings program announced in September 2024.
&#8220;Given the softness in some of our snacking categories, the anticipated sequential top-line improvement did not materialize during the quarter, and we now have a more muted second half expectation. As a result, we are updating our full-year&nbsp;guidance,&#8221; said President and CEO Mick Beekhuizen.
FY25 Outlook: Campbell&nbsp;sees net sales growth of 6% to 8% (prior view: 9%&nbsp;to&nbsp;11%). Adjusted EBIT growth&nbsp;of 3% to 5% (previous view (9%&nbsp;to&nbsp;11%).
The company expects Adjusted EPS of $2.95 &#8211; $3.05, down from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/42301589" rel="noreferrer noopener">prior view</a> of $3.12&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;$3.22 and against the estimate of $3.13.
Meanwhile, the company&#8217;s&nbsp;guidance&nbsp;does not reflect any impact from potential import tariffs by the U.S. government and potential retaliatory actions taken by other countries.
