Goodyear Offloads Chemical Business To Reduce Debt, Fund Growth

Elon Musk's Space exploration company SpaceX was handed a major boost by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration or FAA as SpaceX's Texas Starship launch was approved by the agency.
What Happened: Following the approval, the launch could take place as soon as May 27, 2025, depending on weather and SpaceX's preparations, from the company's launch site in Texas, Reuters reported on Thursday.
The agency has redrawn hazard zones for the rocket's flight path, which had experienced back-to-back failures earlier this year, from 800 nautical miles to 1,600 nautical miles, the report suggests.
Debris from the 400-foot-tall rocket's previous launches had fallen over Turks and Caicos as well as parts of the Caribbean. The FAA said it&#8217;s working closely with the UK, Mexico, the Bahamas, Cuba, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
"With the Starship vehicle return to flight determination, Starship Flight 9 is authorized for launch, the FAA finds SpaceX meets all of the rigorous safety, environmental and other licensing requirements," the agency said in its statement.

Economist and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman is sounding the alarm yet again for the U.S. economy, likening its current vulnerabilities to those typically seen in emerging markets.
What Happened: In his Substack newsletter <a href="https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/gaming-out-a-sudden-stop">on</a> Thursday, Krugman published an article titled &#8220;Gaming Out A Sudden Stop,&#8221; in which he raised concerns regarding an &#8220;emerging-market-type crisis&#8221; for the United States.
A scenario marked by a sudden stop in foreign capital inflows that could spark a housing crash, sink the dollar, and unleash stagflation.
Krugman draws parallels between the U.S. economy and past crises in developing nations, suggesting America's dependence on foreign investment to fund its persistent trade deficits makes it vulnerable.

&#8220;Right now I'm worried that the U.S. might be facing an emerging-market-type crisis: A ‘sudden stop,' an abrupt cutoff of inflows of foreign capital,&#8221; he says. &#8220;If we have a crisis like that, it could, in particular, cause a severe housing crash.&#8221;
Krugman emphasized that such a shock could quickly rattle the dollar and financial markets, comparing the risks to Argentina&#8217;s 2001 Peso collapse.
While the U.S. may be shielded to an extent because its debt is dollar-denominated, Krugman warns that the fallout could still get quite &#8220;ugly,&#8221; especially for interest rates. A spike in borrowing costs would directly hit the housing market, which he views as the most rate-sensitive sector.
Krugman warns that a &#8220;sudden stop&#8221; could be a very ugly experience for the United States, since it would lead the U.S. dollar to plunge, stoking inflation, and thus tying the Federal Reserve&#8217;s hands. &#8220;A recipe for lots of economic pain and a bout of stagflation,&#8221; he says.
While he acknowledges that such a crisis hasn&#8217;t occurred in the U.S. before, he says risks are increasing with the rest of the world now realizing that &#8220;we aren't the country we used to be,&#8221; he says.
Why It Matters: Several other economists and market experts have echoed similar views in recent weeks, calling a falling dollar and rising yields a recipe for trouble.
A week ago, economist Peter Schiff said that the world was <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/bonds/25/05/45396490/peter-schiff-says-trade-truce-aside-the-world-is-losing-confidence-in-dollar-and-in-us-ability-to-put-fiscal-house-in-order">losing confidence</a> in the U.S. dollar and America&#8217;s ability to get its fiscal house in order. He said, &#8220;the consequences of de-dollarization will be profound.&#8221; 
Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers called on President Donald Trump to retreat on the new tax cuts, saying that the simultaneous selloffs in Treasuries, equities, as well as the U.S. dollar are a sign of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45556622/larry-summers-asks-trump-to-retreat-on-taxes-just-like-he-did-on-tariffs-few-more-days-like-this-and-recession-will-be-likely">rising economic fragility</a>.
Price Action: The U.S. 30-Year Treasury yields currently trade at 5.026%, with the 20-Year at 5.039%, and the 10-Year yield at 4.523%. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is down 0.63% on Friday, trading at 99.334.

Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WY#NYSE">WY</a>) on Thursday disclosed the acquisition of roughly 117,000 acres of premium timberlands in North Carolina and Virginia from Roanoke Timberlands LLC <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/n45575255/weyerhaeuser-acquiring-high-quality-timberlands-in-north-carolina-and-virginia" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">for $375 million</a>.
These well-established and highly productive forests will complement Weyerhaeuser&#8217;s current timber and mill operations in North Carolina while also extending its presence into southeastern Virginia, an area with strong market potential.
The acquisition is expected to deliver immediate and sustained portfolio-leading cash flows within the company&#8217;s Southern Timberlands business, the company said in a press release.

The acquired timberlands are situated in robust and expanding sawlog and fiber markets in the U.S. South. The portfolio consists primarily of fee-owned land, with 81% planted in pine, offering strong site productivity and reliable, all-weather logging access.
The mature age profile of the pine stands is projected to support an average annual harvest of 7.4 tons per acre, or approximately 860,000 tons, during the first five years.
The assets are expected to generate an average annual timber-free cash <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">flow yield of 5.1% over this period</a>. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the third quarter, pending customary closing conditions.
Weyerhaeuser plans to fund most of the $375 million purchase through the tax-efficient sale of non-core timberland assets. Upon completion, the company will own or manage around 744,000 acres in North Carolina and 150,000 acres in Virginia.
Devin W. Stockfish, president and chief executive officer, said, &#8220;Upon closing of this acquisition, we will have acquired more than&nbsp;$1.1 billion&nbsp;of high-quality timberlands since the beginning of 2022, achieving the multi-year growth target we announced in&nbsp;September 2021.&#8221;
&#8220;Over a similar period, we&#8217;ve also returned a significant amount of cash back to shareholders through dividends and share repurchase and announced a compelling engineered wood products growth opportunity, all while maintaining a strong balance sheet.&#8221;
Last week, Weyerhaeuser disclosed that it has agreed to sell its lumber mill in Princeton, British Columbia, to the Gorman Group for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/n45555076/weyerhaeuser-to-sell-princeton-b-c-lumber-mill-to-gorman-group" rel="noreferrer noopener">around C$120 million in cash</a>. Weyerhaeuser anticipates recording a gain from the sale and incurring a tax liability of about C$15 million.
As of March 31, 2025, cash and cash equivalents stood <a target="_blank" href="https://investor.weyerhaeuser.com/" rel="noreferrer noopener">at</a> $560 million.

Weyerhaeuser's Latest Acquisition Promises 'Portfolio-Leading Cash Flows'

A crucial Navy server that stores vital pay and promotion data remains exposed without a disaster recovery plan after a contract to transfer the information to the cloud was canceled by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
What Happened: Earlier this month, DOGE terminated a $170 million contract with Pantheon, a firm tasked with transferring the Navy&#8217;s personnel data to a secure cloud platform. The transfer would have protected one of the last remaining Navy data centers, located in Tennessee, from threats like natural disasters. &#8220;Everything in terms of what sailors access, in terms of [the Navy&#8217;s online HR portal] would be impacted because they run on those mainframes,&#8221; a senior personnel official <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2025/05/22/single-server-holds-all-navy-pay-and-promotion-data-doge-canceled-contract-upload-it-cloud.html">told</a> Military.com. &#8220;Reconstituting it would probably take anywhere between nine and 16 months, during which time we could not promote sailors effectively," he added.

In economic data, U.S. initial jobless claims fell by 2,000 to 227,000 for the week ending May 17, below expectations of 230,000. The S&amp;P Global services PMI rose to 52.3 in May from 50.8, and the manufacturing PMI also climbed to 52.3 from 50.2 in April, indicating stronger economic momentum.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower on Thursday, led by declines in utilities, health care, and energy. Consumer discretionary and communication services outperformed, closing higher.
The Dow closed flat at 41,859.09, the S&amp;P 500 dropped 0.04% to 5,842.01, while the Nasdaq gained 0.28% to 18,925.74.
