<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1) Goodyear Tire &amp; Rubber Co.</h3>
Goodyear Tire &amp; Rubber was a bright spot on Thursday, rallying nearly 12% amidst all the chaos, making it the day&#8217;s top gainer.
Edison Yu, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, believes Goodyear to be <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/25/04/44614534/5-car-stocks-that-will-benefit-from-trumps-liberation-day">a &#8216;relative winner&#8217; of Trump&#8217;s trade wars</a>, as most of its U.S. demand is filled with domestic manufacturing. As a result, it is less exposed to tariffs on imports, relative to peers in this industry.
Yu further adds that Goodyear&#8217;s focus on replacement tires, which make up 85% of its revenue, is set to benefit from the auto tariffs, as consumers will stick with their vehicles longer, leading to more tire changes. The stock has been upgraded to a &#8216;BUY&#8217; with a price target of $13, as <a href="https://www.investing.com/analysis/why-goodyear-tire-stock-is-a-relative-winner-amid-tariff-turmoil-200659060">reported</a> by Investing.com.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2) Lamb Weston Holdings Inc</h3>
Consumer staples were, in fact, only 1 of 11 sectors in the S&amp;P 500 to finish the day higher, as investors rushed to safe havens, and Lamb Weston Holdings was one of them, gaining 10%.
Analysts like Citi&#8217;s Filippo Falorni have long considered staples to be recession-proof and resilient in the face of uncertainty, telling the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/stocks/consumer-staples-gain-on-rush-to-safety-after-tariffs-spark-market-rout-45d2582b">Wall Street Journal</a> that investors can expect &#8216;stable earnings and revenue even in a tough environment.&#8217;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3) First Solar Inc</h3>
First Solar rallied nearly 5% on Thursday, being an American-made solar panel company, which allows it to dodge tariffs that apply to its competitors.
Chinese-made solar panels, which were the company&#8217;s biggest competitors, are now at a considerable disadvantage. <a href="https://www.renewableenergyworld.com/energy-business/why-is-first-solar-stock-soaring-while-much-of-the-market-sags/">Renewable Energy World</a> reports that investors in solar energy will seek to avoid the massive 54% tax on Chinese panels, while also earning the tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act, giving a strong impetus to First Solar.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4) Dollar General</h3>
Investors likely pursued Dollar General as another recession-proof stock, being a major discount retailer with nearly 20,000 stores, leading to a 4% spike on Thursday, and an 18% rally since the beginning of March. 
However, this theory doesn&#8217;t hold up too well, as Billy Duberstein <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2025/04/03/dollar-general-rallied-18-in-march-market-crash/">writes</a> for the Motley Fool, that during the post-pandemic inflationary period, Dollar General was hit with an expensive combination of inflation hitting its low-income customers&#8217; purchasing power, along with a rise in theft. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5) American Water Works </h3>
A public utility that provides water and wastewater solutions, American Water Works is well insulated from global trade, tariffs, and geopolitics, making it the perfect safe haven stock.
People are unlikely to stop using water during a recession, and add to this, the stock offers an annualized yield of 2%, making it a great pick for those looking to overcome the tariff upheaval.

Another indicator is the Consumer Confidence Board Consumer Confidence Index <a href="https://www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence">which fell</a> sharply by seven points in February, indicating pessimism about current and future economic conditions. 
"In February, consumer confidence registered the largest monthly decline since August 2021," said Stephanie Guichard, senior economist, Global Indicators at The Conference Board. 
"This is the third consecutive month-on-month decline, bringing the Index to the bottom of the range that has prevailed since 2022, Guichard added. 
American households are running out of emergency funds which could be contributing to the bleaker financial outlooks. Data from the Federal Reserve shows that households' ability to come up with $2,000 for an emergency expense within the next month is at the lowest level since the survey started in 2015.
"Taking into account that the CPI level today is 35% higher than in 2015, the situation is even worse," said Dr. Torsten Slok, chief economist for Apollo Global Management.&nbsp;
What Else: Retailers are reporting demand is slowing, with Kohl's Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KSS#NYSE">KSS</a>) CEO Ashley Buchanan saying <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44262764/kohls-ceo-warns-of-pretty-challenging-environment-for-consumers-expects-value-seeking-to-grow-over-next-3-months">last week</a> that customers making less than $100,000 are now feeling squeezed.

The analyst maintained a Market Perform rating and lowered the price target from $115 to $85.
"In 2025, we expect Five Below to focus on back to basics after gravitating away from its core trendy, value-focused assortment in the past few years due to missteps in merchandising and operations," Feldman said.
Five Below is focused on its core teen and pre-teen customers, the analyst says. The company is also &#8220;reducing SKUs to allow newness&#8221; to emphasize value of products and take advantage of emerging trends.
Lastly, the company lowered its new store target for 2025.
"We believe these are steps in the right direction and should help to revive the business,&#8221; Feldman said.
Feldman said some of the company's changes could take time. The addition of a new CEO in December also remains a wildcard for the company's forward strategic plan, the analyst added.
"Taking it all together, we are encouraged by the progress on the turnaround but wait to see improvement in sales and profits."

Dollar General Shifts Focus To Stability, But Analysts Flag Profitability Pressures

Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DG#NYSE">DG</a>) reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter sales results on Thursday.
The company reported fourth-quarter sales growth of 4.5% year-on-year to $10.304 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $10.264 billion. EPS of $0.87 missed the consensus estimate of $1.51.
"We were pleased with the underlying performance of the business in the fourth quarter, including improved execution and solid top-line results," said CEO Todd Vasos.
As a result of store portfolio optimization review during the quarter, the company plans to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf stores, and convert an additional six pOpshelf stores to Dollar General stores in the first quarter of fiscal 2025.
Dollar General expects FY25 sales growth of 3.4% – 4.4% and same-store sales growth of 1.2% – 2.2%. The company anticipates FY25 EPS of $5.10 – $5.80 versus an estimate of $5.85. Capital expenditure of $1.3 billion – $1.4 billion.
Dollar General shares gained 6.8% to close at $79.95 on Thursday.

U.S. stocks settled lower on Thursday, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 500 points during the session following the release of economic data.
U.S. producer prices came in unchanged in February from January compared to a revised 0.6% increase in the previous period and versus estimates of a 0.3% gain. U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 2,000 to 220,000 in the first week of March, compared to market estimates of 225,000.
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 200% tariff on European wine and spirits imports unless the EU eliminates its 50% tariff on U.S. whiskey.
Shares of Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DG#NYSE">DG</a>) gained around 7% on Thursday after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter sales results. UiPath Inc.  (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PATH#NYSE">PATH</a>) shares dipped around 16% after the company reported a fourth-quarter revenue miss and issued first-quarter revenue guidance below estimates.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with consumer discretionary, real estate and communication services stocks recording biggest losses on Thursday. However, utilities stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 537 points to 40,813.57 on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 1.39% to 5,521.52, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 1.96% at 17,303.01 during Thursday's session.

A fresh wave of selling sent the S&amp;P 500 spiraling into technical correction territory on Thursday, falling 10% from its all-time high, as trade tensions escalated following President Donald Trump's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">latest tariff threats.</a>
In a volatile session Thursday, the S&amp;P 500 – as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) – closed at 5,521 points, marking a 10% drop from its Feb. 19 peak of 6,147.
The index now sits 3.8% below its 200-day moving average of 5,738, a level many traders consider a key threshold. 
Only 37% of S&amp;P 500 stocks are trading above this moving average, the lowest proportion since November 2023—a sign of broad-based market weakness.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trade War Jitters Shake Markets</h3>
The sell-off accelerated after Trump took to his Truth Social platform, threatening to impose 200% tariffs on all European alcoholic products in response to the EU's decision to slap a 50% tariff on American whiskey.
Earlier this week, Canada announced 25% retaliatory duties on over $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, while the EU planned to impose counter-tariffs starting in April.
Despite the tariff turmoil, recent inflation data painted a more optimistic picture for the U.S. economy. Both consumer and producer prices have come in below expectations this year, reinforcing hopes that the Federal Reserve&#8217;s disinflation efforts are gaining traction. Markets are pricing in three Fed interest rate cuts this year. 
Yet, markets remain laser-focused on trade policy risks. Investors worry that escalating tariffs could undermine corporate earnings, disrupt supply chains, and reignite inflationary pressures—potentially forcing the Fed to rethink its rate-cut trajectory.

S&P 500 Enters Technical Correction As Trade War Fears Rattle Markets

Bears regained control on Wall Street, with major indices wiping out Wednesday's gains and retesting recent lows as investor concerns over tariffs continue <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">to weigh on sentiment.</a>
A much weaker-than-expected producer inflation report failed to provide a meaningful boost to risk assets. In February, the Producer Price Index was flat month-over-month, significantly below the upwardly revised 0.6% in January and well under the 0.3% consensus estimate.
