Television primarily includes the Fox broadcast network, 29 owned and operated local television stations, of which 18 are affiliated with the Fox network, and streaming platform Tubi, which is not subscription-based and is completely ad-supported. Fox effectively sold most of its entertainment assets to Disney in 2019, so it no longer creates entertainment content and relies heavily on live news and sports, with nearly all tied to the pay-TV bundle. The Murdoch family controls Fox.

Just two days after making its trading debut, conservative media outlet Newsmax (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NMAX#NYSE">NMAX</a>) is already up by a phenomenal 2,200%, making it the latest contender within the MAGAverse to receive such an <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44593007/newsmax-stock-soars-more-than-100-as-ipo-momentum-continues-whats-going-on">empathic welcome from Wall Street</a>.
What Happened: Right-wing cable news channel, Newsmax started trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, listing at a 40% premium to its offer price of $10 a share. It then continued its ascent, surging 700% by afternoon, ending Day 1 with an intraday high of $82.25 a share.
On Tuesday, the stock picked up where it left off, rallying another 183% before closing at $233 a share. This briefly valued the company at over $28 billion and made its founder and CEO, Christopher Ruddy, a billionaire. Newsmax now features a market cap that is larger than The New York Times, a 175-year-old media institution.

While early investors in the company&#8217;s $75 million mini-IPO have done remarkably well, experts and analysts warn that this is just another &#8220;Meme&#8221; stock. 
Steve Sosnick, the chief strategist at Interactive Brokers <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-01/newsmax-becomes-a-meme-stock-with-1-160-post-ipo-surge">told</a> Bloomberg, &#8216;This makes the early run-up in DJT seem like child&#8217;s play,&#8217; referring to the infamous Trump Media &amp; Technology Group listing last year, before adding that &#8220;This is the newest entry into the pantheon of meme stocks.&#8221;
He further goes on to attribute this rally to a combination of &#8216;a tiny float and a fiercely loyal user base&#8217; that got the stock moving shortly after it opened.&#8221; 
If there&#8217;s anything we know about such speculative rallies, it is that they don&#8217;t last very long. JJ Kinahan, the CEO of IG North America <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/newsmax-stock-ipo-djt-news-65a34499">told</a> Barron &#8216;there is a subsection of clients that are willing to put some of their speculative portfolio to ‘catch the wave,&#8217; but they risk sudden dips and volatility as the wave fizzles out.
Why It Matters: There are plenty of parallels between this Newsmax listing and those of other recent additions to the conservative media complex. 
This includes the Trump Media &amp; Technology Group, the parent company behind Truth Social that similarly surged 1,650% soon after listing, followed by Rumble Inc, jumping 40% on listing day, which pales in comparison but is noteworthy nonetheless.
Both of these stocks witnessed a pullback that was just as dramatic as their rise, with DJT now trading 88% below its all-time of $175, and Rumble down 54% from its peak. Newsmax is set for a similar fate, as FOMO and fanfare always fizzle out, the only thing that remains is fundamentals.

Wells Fargo Maintains Overweight on Fox, Lowers Price Target to $63

Fox Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>) is scheduled to report its fiscal third-quarter results on April 14.
According to Goldman Sachs, the EBITDA estimate for the fiscal third quarter has been reduced from $818 million to $753 million, slightly below the consensus of $755 million. Revenue was $4.11 billion, versus the consensus of $4.16 billion.
The Fox Analyst: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5a1c4e20efacff00015a984c/michael-ng">Analyst Michael Ng</a> maintained a Buy rating and price target of $60.
The Fox Thesis: Ng said in the note that the company could report Cable Network EBITDA of $803 million, beating the consensus of $788 million.
He added, however, that Fox's revenue momentum may be offset by elevated operating expenses "on heightened news gathering costs post-election."
The analyst lowered the estimate for Television EBITDA from $101 million to $36 million, below consensus of $47 million, "reflecting a more negative view on Super Bowl profitability."

Super Bowl could generate around $650 million in revenue, with the sports rights costing $700 million, leading to losses of approximately $50 million, he stated.

FOXA Price Action: Shares of Fox had risen by 2.39% to $54.66 at the time of publication on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump's address to a joint session of Congress <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/media/25/03/44102399/heres-how-to-watch-donald-trumps-address-to-congress-time-date-and-what-to-expect">on Tuesday night</a> drew a large audience, but viewership numbers are significantly down from his previous presidential speeches.
What Happened: On Tuesday, Trump spoke for over one hour and 40 minutes. Among the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44133368/trumps-congressional-address-taps-elon-musk-for-government-overhaul-revives-drill-baby-drill-for-energy-boom">various topics he addressed</a> were tariffs, inflation, eggs, Elon Musk, the Department of Government Efficiency, international relations, oil drilling, taxation and the CHIPS Act.
The speech broke the previous record held by former President Bill Clinton. In 2000, Clinton delivered a speech to a joint session of Congress for one hour and 28 minutes. 
While the length of the speech set records for Trump, it failed to break any viewership records.
An average of 36.6 million viewers tuned into Trump's speech Tuesday according to Nielsen data, reported by <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/trump-congress-speech-ratings-viewers-1236328626/">Variety</a>.
This marked a 13% increase from former President Joe Biden&#8216;s 2024 State of the Union speech. Biden drew an average of 32.2 million viewers.
While Trump's speech wasn't an official State of the Union speech given his short time in the White House, the viewership lagged previous Trump speeches to Congress.
During his first term, Trump topped that figure in each of his annual State of the Union speeches to Congress. See below:

Viewership figures include the major networks and cable outlets that broadcast Trump's speech, but may not include all of the streaming viewership which could factor into the declines.
Fox News, which is owned by Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>) said it led the way in Tuesday viewership with an average of 10.7 million viewers during Trump's speech according to the report.
Nielsen also tracked the age of viewers, with an older audience tuning into the broadcast and cable networks to view Trump's speech as seen below:

<li>35-54: 20.5% of viewers</li>
<li>55 or older: 70.7% of viewers</li>

Why It's Important: With the media landscape shifting to streaming and other non-traditional viewership methods, it could be tough to compare the viewership from Tuesday's speech to past presidential speeches.
The same could likely be said for Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20. An average of 24.59 million viewers <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/25/01/43139381/how-many-people-watched-donald-trumps-2025-inauguration-spoiler-less-than-biden-four-years-ago">watched Trump's inauguration</a>, which was down from 33.76 million who tuned into Biden's first inauguration in 2017 (30.64 million).
Fox News, which is Republican-leaning, also led the way in viewership for Trump's inauguration.
The 2024 election cycle saw many broadcast and cable news outlets see a boost in viewership and advertising revenue with viewers tuning in for coverage.
With Trump now in office, viewership figures appear to have dropped and less people may be willing to tune in to hear him speak while in office this time around.
When it comes to companies benefitting from Trump in office again, Fox News is likely the winner.

Trump Congressional Speech Comes Up Short In Viewership: Here's How Many People Watched

Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) had a successful debut with two NFL games on Christmas Day showing strong viewership and helping boost subscriber figures in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/01/43114866/netflix-q4-earnings-record-subscribers-nfl-squid-game-push-past-highest-expectations">the fourth quarter.</a>
With reports of the company's interest in additional NFL games, a Benzinga poll shows the impact this could have on subscriber figures.
 What Happened: After years of focusing on what it called "sports adjacent" content, Netflix has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/24/12/42628116/netflix-adds-womens-world-cup-media-rights-from-football-to-futbol-streamer-all-in-on-live-sports">increased its bets</a> on live sports with golf, NFL, tennis and WWE.
The company's chief content officer Bela Bajaria also said Netflix<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43816739/netflix-wants-more-nfl-games-after-christmas-day-success-could-league-create-bidding-war-with-cbs-fox"> would be interested</a> in more NFL games if possible.
"I definitely want the Sunday (afternoon) games," Bajaria said on "The Town" podcast, as reported by&nbsp;<a href="https://frontofficesports.com/netflix-shifts-strategy-pursuing-nfl-sunday-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FrontOfficeSports</a>.
The answer came when asked which NFL media rights Netflix would be interested in. Netflix later acknowledged that Bajaria&#8217;s comments were informal and not a new content strategy shift.
The Sunday afternoon games are controlled by Paramount Global (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARA#NASDAQ">PARA</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARAA#NASDAQ">PARAA</a>) and Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>).
Those deals are set to expire after the 2033 NFL season, but the NFL has an opt-out clause that could see it end the deals early after the 2029 season. A deal with&nbsp;The Walt Disney Company&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>)&nbsp;for &#8220;Monday Night Football&#8221; ends after the 2030 season. While the NFL may be content with opening up the rights, Netflix would likely be part of a bidding war with the media companies and could end up spending more than it wants. 
Benzinga recently asked readers if adding NFL games could help the streamer.
"Would you subscribe to Netflix specifically for NFL content?" Benzinga asked.
The results were:

<li>I already subscribe to Netflix: 34%</li>
<li>Yes, I'd subscribe for NFL games: 10%</li>
</ul>
The poll found that Netflix having additional NFL games might not add significantly to its subscriber base.
Netflix ended the fourth quarter with 301.63 million paid subscribers, adding a record 18.91 million paid sub. The company will no longer report subscriber figures quarterly, choosing instead to focus on key financial metrics.

Why It's Important: Netflix is on a three-year deal with the NFL that gets the streaming company at least one game every Christmas Day.

Netflix&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/24/12/42628116/netflix-adds-womens-world-cup-media-rights-from-football-to-futbol-streamer-all-in-on-live-sports" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">landed the U.S. rights&nbsp;</a>to the Women&#8217;s World Cup in 2027 and 2031. The company is also said<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43570574/netflix-eyes-formula-one-us-broadcast-rights-starting-in-2026-report" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;to be exploring</a>&nbsp;a bid for the U.S. rights to Formula 1. ESPN has had the rights to Formula 1 since 2018 and its deal expires after the 2025 season.
While Netflix previously avoided live sports and full seasons, its new strategy seems focused on acquiring as much sports content as possible to drive advertising and subscriber revenue.
The big question for Netflix subscribers could end up being if Netflix's move is the right one with billions of dollars likely needed to land additional NFL rights. The results of the Benzinga reader poll show mixed results and could suggest that Netflix is best suited running with its current Christmas Day games and other content plans.
 NFLX Price Action: Netflix stock trades at $972.58 versus a 52-week trading range of $542.01 to $1,064.50. Netflix stock is up 10% year-to-date in 2025 and up over 57% in the last year.

The study was conducted by Benzinga from Feb. 24, 2025 through Feb. 26, 2025. It included the responses of a diverse population of adults 18 or older. Opting into the survey was completely voluntary, with no incentives offered to potential respondents. The study reflects results from 137 adults.

Streaming giant Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) could have its eyes on more National Football League games after the successful debut of the company's Christmas Day games that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/24/12/42711504/lebron-james-vs-nfl-nba-star-says-christmas-is-our-day-2024-ratings-paint-a-different-picture">broke streaming records.</a>
What Happened: For years, Netflix has resisted calls to push further into sports rights, opting instead to do one-off live events or what it called<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/23/07/33308114/netflix-doesnt-want-to-live-sports-and-chill-were-happy-with-sports-adjacent-programming-ce"> "sports adjacent" content.</a>
The company's sports documentaries and reality series like "Drive to Survive" have helped leagues and athletes get more attention with a surge in viewership and increased fans for Liberty Formula One (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FWONA#NASDAQ">FWONA</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FWONK#NASDAQ">FWONK</a>) owned Formula 1 racing league often <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/09/23071390/could-a-netflix-formula-one-streaming-partnership-reach-the-finish-line">credited to Netflix.</a>
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria was asked about the pursuit of more NFL games during an appearance on "The Town" podcast.
"I definitely want the Sunday (afternoon) games," Bajaria said, as reported by <a href="https://frontofficesports.com/netflix-shifts-strategy-pursuing-nfl-sunday-rights/">FrontOfficeSports</a>.
The answer came when asked which NFL media rights Netflix would be interested in. Netflix later acknowledged that the comments were informal ones made by Bajaria and not a new content strategy shift.
As reported by FrontOfficeSports, the current Sunday afternoon NFL games are part of media rights packages with CBS, which is owned by Paramount Global (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARA#NASDAQ">PARA</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PARAA#NASDAQ">PARAA</a>) and Fox, which is owned by Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>).
Those deals are set to expire after the 2033 NFL season, but the NFL has an opt-out clause that could see it end the deals early after the 2029 season. A deal with The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) for "Monday Night Football" ends after the 2030 season.
Given strong viewership and demand from media companies to land NFL content, the league could choose to end the deals early.

Why It's Important: While Bajaria's comments were in passing and not an official announcement, they signal interest in adding more NFL content.
Netflix is currently on a three-year deal with the NFL that gets the streaming company at least one game every Christmas Day.

Prime Video, which is the streaming platform owned by Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), partnered with the NFL for the rights to "Thursday Night Football." Amazon's weekly broadcast has helped boost the company's streaming subscribers and advertising revenue.
"Thursday Night Football" games averaged 13.2 million viewers during the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/01/43013529/amazon-scores-record-with-steelers-ravens-nfl-playoffs-stream-how-game-stacks-up-with-other-media-streamers"> 2024 NFL season</a>, up 11% year-over-year.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has often shied away from saying the company wants full sports seasons. In January, he told investors that the economics didn't work and the "live events business" was where the company wanted to be.
Previously, Sarandos said the company wasn't "anti-sports," but rather "pro-profit."

The company will no longer break out subscriber figures, which means more attention will be placed on revenue and the company's content.
NFLX Price Action: Netflix stock was down 0.1% to $1,033.66 on Wednesday, compared to a 52-week trading range of $542.01 to $1,064.50. However, Netflix stock has increased 79% over the last year.

For a second straight year, the Super Bowl has broken a viewership record with 126 million viewers watching the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/02/43583513/eagles-fly-over-chiefs-40-22-as-super-bowl-lix-tests-potential-137-million-viewership-for-fox">Kansas City Chiefs.</a>
What Happened: A lopsided victory for the Eagles over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX appears to have had a minimal impact on viewership for media rights partner Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOX#NASDAQ">FOX</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FOXA#NASDAQ">FOXA</a>), which was able to secure $7 million to $8 million for most <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/01/43324031/super-bowl-lix-commercials-hit-record-8-million-how-fox-corporation-can-win-from-nfl-championship">30-second ad slots</a>.
New <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/fox-projects-super-bowl-lix-averaged-record-126-million-u-s-viewers#:~:text=Fox%20Sports%20is%20projecting%20a,as%20the%20NFL's%20digital%20platforms.">data </a>from Fox and Nielsen says an average of 126 million viewers watched Super Bowl LIX, up 2% from<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/space/24/02/37109382/super-bowl-lviii-sets-modern-day-viewership-record-how-did-nfl-championship-compare-to-apollo-11-mo"> last year's record 123.7 million.</a>
Viewership peaked at 135.7 million average viewers around the 8 p.m. ET to 8:15 p.m. ET time slot, which was in the second quarter.
The game was shown on Fox, Fox Deportes, Telemundo and streamed on Tubi and NFL digital channels.
Super Bowl LIX set a Super Bowl record for streaming with 14.5 million average viewers, including 13.6 million on Tubi.
This marks the second straight year with a viewership record for the Super Bowl if the figures hold in the final Nielsen and internal figures. This would also mark the third straight year of an average of 100 million or more viewers.
Several years ago Super Bowl viewership dipped below 100 million viewers, but new tracking for streaming and out-of-home viewership has inflated the numbers to likely more accurate figures.

Why It's Important: The record average viewership and peak audience indicate that fears of viewers dropping off were exaggerated.
The Eagles held a commanding 24-0 lead at halftime before winning 40-22. There was some concern that the companies spending millions on advertisements in the second half of the game could see fewer viewers.
Kendrick Lamar's halftime performance also drew criticism on social media from many people who would have preferred musicians from genres other than rap to perform. The viewership figures likely indicate that the halftime show was among the most watched parts of the game. The final viewership figures will be released later this week, and more game details will be provided.
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/02/43548933/exclusive-super-bowl-lix-viewers-more-excited-about-nfl-game-kendrick-lamar-commercials-or-taylor-swift-63-say">A Benzinga survey </a>ahead of the game saw 63% of people say they were most interested in watching the game, with 19% saying they were most interested in the commercials and 11% saying they were most interested in Lamar's halftime show.
The record Super Bowl viewership comes as 2024 NFL viewership was down overall, but saw several records set. Overall NFL viewership averaged 17.5 million viewers per game, down 2% year-over-year. This total marked the sixth highest in NFL history.
NFL Playoffs viewership averaged 35.2 million, not including the Super Bowl, which was down 9% year-over-year.
Streaming companies like Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) and Amazon.com (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) owned Prime Video set records <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/01/43013529/amazon-scores-record-with-steelers-ravens-nfl-playoffs-stream-how-game-stacks-up-with-other-media-streamers">for streaming viewership</a> with games during the season. 
Netflix's two Christmas Day games averaged 24.1 million and 24.3 million viewers, marking the most-streamed regular season NFL games. Amazon saw an overall boost to its viewership during the season with its NFL Playoffs game breaking company records.
FOX Price Action: Fox stock is up 0.5% to $50.62 on Tuesday versus a 52-week trading range of $25.82 to $52.54. Fox stock is up 9.5% year-to-date in 2025 and 80.7% over the last year.
