From lie-flat airline seats to luxury cruise cabins and high-end hotel brands, premium travel products have shown striking resilience to macroeconomic pressures—and companies leaning into this segment are emerging <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/travel-stocks">as the strongest performers.</a>
Premium travel is "increasingly driven by higher-income consumers less impacted by short-term macro volatility," said Goldman Sachs analyst Catherine O'Brien.
According to O'Brien, stocks most exposed to "premiumization" include Buy-rated Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>), Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DAL#NYSE">DAL</a>), United Airlines Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Airlines: Premium Demand Leads</h3>
In a note shared Thursday, O'Brien highlighted that premium cabins outperformed economy in the first quarter across all major U.S. airlines.
Delta Air Lines posted a 6.8% year-over-year increase in premium revenue in the first quarter, while its main cabin revenue declined 1.2%. United Airlines reported international Polaris cabin revenue up 8% and Premium Plus up 5%.
Alaska Air said premium accounted for 34% of total revenue, with Hawaiian routes contributing a 17% jump in high-end bookings.
Airlines like JetBlue Airways Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JBLU#NASDAQ">JBLU</a>) and American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) echoed similar trends, with premium class outperforming main cabin across both domestic and international routes.
This shift isn't just cyclical. Airlines have introduced more segmented products—from extra legroom economy to exclusive suites—making premium more accessible while preserving upsell potential. Delta's domestic first-class load factor jumped to 75%, from just 12% fifteen years ago.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hotels: Luxury RevPAR Resilience</h3>
In lodging, luxury continues to drive performance.
Marriott International Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAR#NASDAQ">MAR</a>) said its luxury tier had the strongest occupancy and average daily rate (ADR) growth globally in the first quarter, while Hyatt Hotels Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/H#NYSE">H</a>) saw luxury RevPAR (revenue per available room) rise over 8%.
By contrast, Choice Hotels International Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CHH#NYSE">CHH</a>) and Wyndham Hotels &amp; Resorts Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WH#NYSE">WH</a>), both focused on economy and midscale properties, slashed their 2025 outlooks by up to 300 basis points.
Premium hotel supply remains constrained due to higher construction costs and longer breakeven timelines, which support pricing power and margin sustainability. Growth in luxury RevPAR has led all chain scales for four straight quarters, with the first quarter of 2025 showing 7.5% year-over-year growth.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cruise Lines: Premium Pricing Power</h3>
The cruise sector is also sailing toward premium. Goldman notes that Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises have priced their newest ships at up to 60% premiums over older vessels.
For instance, Royal&#8217;s Icon of the Seas commands a 43% price premium, while NCLH's Norwegian Aqua leads with a 59% markup.
Premium cruise offerings such as "The Haven" suites on Norwegian ships continue to sell out early and achieve top customer satisfaction scores. RCL also noted that ships built after the Oasis class generate 2x the EBITDA of older ships.

Premium Travel Demand Gives Airlines, Hotels And Cruises An Edge in 2025: Goldman Sachs

Shares of cruise stocks are trading higher, possibly amid overall market strength after President Trump delayed 50% EU tariffs to July. The industry may also be experiencing a rise due to a surge in travel during Memorial Day weekend.

Bank of America Securities offered a cross-sector analysis of the leisure consumer space on Thursday, outlining recent performance <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trends across several key segments.</a>
The firm notes that while trends vary by category, segments like cruises and premium travel continue to show steady performance, whereas more value-focused areas are facing weakness.
In the lodging sector, BofA notes that aggregated credit and debit card data for April spending showed a 3% year-over-year decline, in line with March figures.
The firm also sees weakness in its Las Vegas room rate survey, with forward rates down 11%.

Analysts suggest that BofA's card data skews toward leisure spending and aligns with commentary from Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HLT#NYSE">HLT</a>), Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/H#NYSE">H</a>), and Marriott International (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAR#NASDAQ">MAR</a>), all of which noted softer low-end RevPAR trends.
In the timeshare segment, performance remains steady despite broader uncertainty.
On the ski front, Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTN#NYSE">MTN</a>) reported a 3% drop in ski visits this season, underperforming the overall industry, which was up 2%. The lag may be linked to softer non-pass lift ticket sales, which are typically booked during the season and carry a higher price.
Looking ahead to next season, while the number of passes sold is down, total dollars collected are up through April 20. BofA adds that Memorial Day is typically a key trigger for pass sales, but an uptick in web traffic has yet to materialize.
For cruise, BofA notes that based on aggregated monthly debit and credit card data, spending has slowed from the strong double-digit growth seen late last year to flat year-over-year in April.
While some of this decline may be attributed to the timing of Easter, economic uncertainty over the past few months has also likely played a role.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) specifically flagged a slowdown in booking activity, especially for longer European sailings. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) kept its full-year 2025 net yield guidance unchanged, breaking from the usual pattern of upward revisions.
Overall, cruise operators remain well booked for 2025 and still have time to secure additional bookings for 2026 as the year progresses, BofA notes.

Bank Of America Sees Mixed Signals In Leisure Sector, Highlights Strength In Premium Travel And Cruise Stability

I got into the investment business on a steady diet of Graham and Whitman. But that was the 1980s and early 1990s – the golden age of dealmakers and junk bonds, leveraged buyouts and greenmail. 
Long before the players became gentlemanly private equity titans and activist investors, they were raiders, vultures, and even, in one famous book about the RJR deal, barbarians.
Legendary fortunes were made, reputations created and shattered.
All of these high-return, high-flying strategies shared a common thread. Leveraged buyouts, distressed investing and risk arb were all just variations on the value investing theme.
The private equity giants of today are still doing this. Thanks to their quarterly filings, you can copy their investment approach—a strategy that has beaten the markets 4-to-1 since 2001.
Even the creation of the junk bond market was based on Michael Milken&#8217;s studies on the returns from buying undervalued lower-rated bonds, a strategy founded on basic value investing principles.
The big winners in all these strategies took value investing and added debt.
It was like adding nitro to the tank of a stock car. If you could control the vehicle at high speed through the corners, there was no race you couldn&#8217;t win.
Although the golden age of risk arb and the smaller investors&#8217; ability to compete in distressed debt are all behind us, we can still use the combination of debt and value investing to beat the index by a wide margin.
When the 13F filings come out every quarter, most of the short-attention-spans in the market today head for the same filings at the same time.
Warren, Cathie, Stanley, Tepper and Seth still get all the attention.
I may get around to those at some point, but one of the first places I turn is to the leading private equity firms.
Firms like Apollo Global Management (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APO#NYSE">APO</a>), Blackstone (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BX#NYSE">BX</a>) and KKR (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KKR#NYSE">KKR</a>) still use basic principles of value investing along with a healthy dose of debt to drive massive returns for themselves and their investors.
What most people do not realize is that these firms also have large public securities portfolios, and stealing their ideas has created some massive market-beating opportunities.
If you had bought shares of Mr. Cooper (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COOP#NASDAQ">COOP</a>) when it first appeared in KKR&#8217;s public portfolio in 2018, you could have made almost ten times your money.

BrightSpring Health Services (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BTSG#NASDAQ">BTSG</a>) provides home and community-based health services to complex patients, positioning itself in a niche with long-term demographic tailwinds. The company is newly public and pursuing scale through both organic growth and targeted acquisitions in behavioral and specialty pharmacy segments.
Henry Schein (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HSIC#NASDAQ">HSIC</a>) is a global distributor of dental and medical supplies primarily serving small- and mid-sized practices. The company generates stable cash flow and has a long history of disciplined capital deployment, though growth is modest and sensitive to procedure volume trends.
BrightView (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BV#NYSE">BV</a>) is the largest commercial landscaping services provider in the U.S., with recurring maintenance revenue making up the majority of its business. Under new leadership, the firm is undergoing a restructuring push to improve margins and reduce debt after years of underperformance.

Royal Caribbean, the world's second-largest cruise operator, is particularly exposed to such sentiment shifts given its aggressive capacity expansion, including new flagship vessels Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas, both recently launched.
While Royal Caribbean recently raised its 2025 EPS guidance to $10.25–$10.50, investors are now questioning whether forward bookings and pricing strength can hold amid a weakening U.S. economy, rising recession odds, and signs of a flattening yield curve in the cruise space.

Royal Caribbean (RCL) Shares Fall Amid Sector-Wide Concerns: What's Going On?

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) shares plummeted Thursday after the company reported worse-than-expected <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/g45094877/norwegian-cruise-line-holdings-reports-first-quarter-2025-financial-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">first-quarter 2025 results</a>.
The company reported a first-quarter revenue decline of 2.9% year over year to $2.127 billion, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $2.14 billion.
This reflects a 2% drop in Capacity Days due to more berths for larger ships in dry dock and a strategic reduction in passenger air participation rates.
Passenger ticket revenues fell 2.8% YoY to $1.418 billion, and Onboard revenue declined 3.1% to $708.87 million. Total cruise operating expenses decreased 6% to $1.303 billion.
Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter stood at $453.07 million, down 2.3% YoY, and the margin gained 12 bps to 21.3%. Adjusted EPS of 7 cents below the consensus estimate of 9 cents.
Operating income fell 8% to $200.9 million, and the operating margin of 9.4% contracted 52 basis points.
The company's 12-month forward bookings softened but remained within the optimal range. Q1 2025 occupancy was 101.5%, down year-over-year due to dry-dock capacity. Advance ticket sales rose 2.6% to $3.9 billion.

As of March 31, 2025, the company had a total debt of $14.0 billion and a Net Debt of $13.8 billion. Liquidity at quarter-end was $1.4 billion, including $184.4 million in cash and $1.0 billion available under the Revolving Loan Facility.
Operating cash flow for the quarter totaled $679.221 million, down 15.8% YoY.
Gross margin per Capacity Day rose 5% as reported and 7% in Constant Currency. Net Yield grew 0.6%, as reported, and 1.2% in Constant Currency, exceeding guidance.
Gross Cruise Costs per Capacity Day were $297, down from $300, while Adjusted Net Cruise Cost excluding Fuel increased 2.9%, better than the 3.9% guidance.
"Looking ahead, our proven track record of long-term Net Yield growth, strong cost control, continued record guest satisfaction scores and guest repeat rates give us confidence about our future. Thus, as we remain mindful of the evolving macroeconomic environment and despite recent volatility, we are maintaining our full year 2025 Adjusted EBITDA and Adjusted EPS guidance," said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.
&#8220;While we recognize there may be potential pressures on the top line, we believe these can be effectively offset by the continued execution of our cost savings initiatives. Our focus remains on managing the business for the long term &#8211; balancing disciplined pricing and cost control with guest experience and strategic investments for the future,&#8221; Sommer added.
2025 Outlook: Norwegian Cruise Line expects FY25 net yield on a constant currency basis to increase 2.0%-3.0% and occupancy of 102.5%.
Reaffirmed Adjusted EBITDA guidance of $2.72 billion and adjusted EPS of $2.05, with a consensus of $2.07.
Q2 Outlook: Norwegian Cruise Line sees net Yield of 2.5%. Adjusted EPS of ~$0.51 versus an estimate of $0.51.
NCLH for the second quarter Occupancy is expected to be ~103.2%. Sees Adj. EBITDA of ~$670 million.

Norwegian Cruise Line Tumbles After Earnings Miss, Still Confident In 2025 Guidance

A closely watched inflation gauge used by U.S. policymakers cooled in March, signaling easing price pressures ahead of the April 2 tariff announcement, as consumers and businesses assessed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">the potential economic impact.</a>
The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose 2.3% year-over-year, slowing from February's upwardly revised 2.7% and just slightly above expectations of 2.2%. On a monthly basis, headline PCE was unchanged, a sharp deceleration from the 0.4% increase seen in February, and matching expectations.
Stripping out food and energy, core PCE, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure, came in at 2.6% year-over-year, matching forecasts but down from February's revised 3%. 
On a monthly basis, core prices were flat, defying consensus for a 0.1% rise and cooling from the prior 0.4% surge.
Before the PCE report, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that first-quarter GDP contracted by 0.3% on an annualized basis, a sharp reversal from the 2.4% growth in the previous quarter and well below expectations for a 0.4% expansion.
Money markets are currently pricing in a 65% chance of a 25-basis-point interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve&#8217;s June meeting.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Automobile Spending Soars As Consumers Front-Run Tariffs</h3>
Personal income rose 0.5% month-over-month, slightly beating expectations of 0.4%, though slowing from February's revised 0.7% increase. 
Meanwhile, personal spending increased by 0.7% as consumers rushed to get ahead of the tariff impact. The outcome marks an increase from February's 0.5% and well above the 0.4% forecast.
Of the $134.5 billion monthly increase in spending, $56.6 billion was allocated to motor vehicles and parts, indicating precautionary buying behavior ahead of potential price increases. 
Spending on gasoline and other energy goods fell by $29.8 billion.

Wall Street is set for a volatile Wednesday after first-quarter GDP data showed an unexpected economic contraction, stoking fears that a recession <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/45098824/tariffs-hit-hard-as-us-economy-shrinks-for-first-time-since-2022">may already be underway. </a>
The U.S. economy shrank by 0.3% on an annualized basis last quarter, down from 2.4% growth in the previous quarter and well below the expected 0.4% growth, official advance statistics showed.
The outcome marked the first quarterly contraction since the second quarter of 2022. 
In addition, U.S. private employers added 62,000 jobs in April, according to ADP National Employment Report, the lowest since July 2024 and well below predictions of 108,000. 
Broad-based equity losses followed during premarket trading in New York as investors digested signs of weakening growth, elevated inflation, and deteriorating trade balances.
Futures on the S&amp;P 500 fell 1.28% to 5,489.61 by 9:00 a.m. ET, shedding 71 points. 
Contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 336 points, or 0.8%, to 40,191. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperformed, plunging 1.9% to 19,184, while the small-cap Russell 2000 index dropped 1.7% to 1,944.
Recession odds for 2025 climbed to 74%, their highest level yet, according to data from CFTC-regulated betting platform Kalshi. Under Kalshi&#8217;s terms, a $100 bet on a recession now yields $131 if the U.S. sees two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

David Russell, global head of market strategy at TradeStation, noted the growing stagflation risk: "Today's data shows more stagflation, with the economy shrinking and prices rising more than expected. Trade was a huge drag as imports jumped ahead of tariffs. Combined with the weak ADP payrolls growth and yesterday's weak JOLTs data, the numbers increasingly suggest a recession may have begun."
Economist Joseph Brusuelas of RSM US LLP offered a more tempered view: "The trade shock caused a large change in behavior that resulted in that large drag due to a larger trade deficit. However, the economy did not slide into recession in Q1 2025." 
He expects a recession more likely by midyear, citing a $140 billion inventory swing that temporarily padded GDP by 2.25 percentage points.
Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, echoed concerns about the unusual nature of the trade dynamics, calling the current environment "a huge natural experiment," with ballooning imports and swelling inventories reflecting a widespread effort to front-run tariffs.

"This will take a while, has nothing to do with tariffs, only that he left us with bad numbers," Trump posted.
