Apple announced its intention to acquire NeXT and bring back Steve Jobs 27 years ago.
If you had invested $1,000 in the company back then, here's how much your investment would be worth.
Apple is the largest company in the world by market capitalization, but at one point, it was on the brink of bankruptcy. Thankfully for the company and its investors, the tech giant decided to acquire NeXT and bring back its legendary co-founder Steve Jobs in 1996.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) announced its intention to acquire Jobs' NeXT in a deal that included $429 million cash and 1.5 million shares of the Apple stock.
While Jobs was not appointed as Apple CEO immediately, it was the first time since his ouster in 1985 that one of the most iconic tech titans of the world would return to the management of the iPhone maker.
Apple's intention to acquire NeXT and bring Jobs back to the company he co-founded – he was ousted by John Sculley 11 years ago in 1985. However, Sculley's vision for the company dragged it down and its struggles continued to mount each passing year.

On the other side, Jobs was building NeXT and his Pixar acquisition proved to be another masterstroke. His flair for user-friendly designs and products proved to be exactly what Apple needed.
Months after bringing him back, Apple would appoint Jobs as its CEO and oust Sculley.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Here's a look at how the Apple stock has fared since Apple decided to bring back Jobs on Dec. 20, 1996.

As you can see, Apple's share price, adjusted for rights shares, bonus shares, stock splits, and other corporate actions, was $0.2098 on Dec. 20, 1996.
Apple's stock price today is $195.89, which is nearly 934 times the stock price 27 years ago.

If you had invested $1,000 in Apple stock on Dec. 20, 1996, today, you would have $933,605.
On the other hand, a similar investment in the Nasdaq index would be worth $11,567, and the S&amp;P 500 worth $6,330.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Apple's Vision For The Future</h2>
Apple's rise to the top of the world was not an easy task. The company went through some of its darkest years during the 11-year exile of its co-founder Jobs.
One of the reasons for Apple's decline in the Sculley era was the former PepsiCo chief's focus on making money, not great products that consumers want.
"It was great to make a profit, because that was what allowed you to make great products. But the products, not the profits, were the motivation. Sculley flipped these priorities to where the goal was to make money," Jobs is quoted as saying in his biography written by Walter Isaacson.
Jobs' return to Apple saw the company launch some of the most iconic products in the tech industry. From the iPod to a rejuvenated lineup of Macs, the iPhone, iPad and more, Apple delivered one hit after another under Jobs' leadership.
iPhone alone would go onto become one of the most profitable businesses in the world – it redefined the smartphone industry forever and led to the end of industry legends like Nokia and BlackBerry Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BB#NYSE">BB</a>).
However, the company is not resting on its laurels and it is <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/12/36275982/apples-longtime-focus-on-iphone-to-change-in-2024-with-vision-pro-airpods-taking-the-limelight-sugge">looking beyond the iPhone for its future</a>. Apple is putting the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/vision-pro">$3,500 Vision Pro</a> headset and AirPods in the driver's seat in 2024, instead of just the iPhone.
Analysts believe Apple is set for "unprecedented growth" amid market turbulence – Wedbush's Dan Ives believes that the iPhone maker could touch $4 trillion market capitalization by the end of 2024.

10 Things Steve Jobs Was Wrong About

Following its attendance of Nutanix Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ntnx#NASDAQ">NTNX</a>)'s <a href="https://www.nutanix.com/next/">NEXT Conference</a> held last week, Oppenheimer said it came away increasingly confident in the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/17/06/9675771/whos-impressed-with-nutanix-following-next-conference"> company's </a> growth prospects, technology roadmap, customer dynamics and its ability to adjust to market shifts.
<h3>Positive Buying Bias Of Customers</h3>
Giving their findings based on a survey of 25 customers &mdash; all of whom attended the conference &mdash; analysts <a href="https://www.tipranks.com/analysts/ittai-kidron">Ittai Kidron</a>, <a href="https://www.tipranks.com/analysts/george-iwanyc">George Iwanyc</a> and <a href="https://www.tipranks.com/analysts/michael-leonard">Michael Leonard</a> said customers have a strong positive spending bias for the company. The analysts noted that 72 percent of those surveyed showed a strong bias for Nutanix spending over the next 12 months; 28 percent expressed flat spending; none indicating a scale back.
<h3>Expanding Usage</h3>
Oppenheimer noted that customers are comfortable shifting more and more of their workloads to HCI solutions, as legacy equipment is retired and new apps ramp. About half of those surveyed are early in their HCI adoption, indicating a quick shift over the next 12 months, the firm revealed.
<h3>Impressive Roadmap</h3>
The firm also found that customers are positive on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/17/06/9677095/the-strategic-positioning-of-nutanix-cant-be-denied">Nutanix's</a> roadmap and value proposition, including Acropolis/Prism/Xi-Cloud/X-Ray, AHV etc, citing simplicity as the key to their use. This, according to the firm, positions the company's HCI strongly versus Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/csco#NASDAQ">CSCO</a>)'s HyperFlex and Dell EMC/VMware, Inc. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vmw#NYSE">VMW</a>)'s VxRail.
<h3>Healthy Partnership With Dell EMC</h3>
Oppenheimer believes the Dell EMC commitment remains healthy. The firm noted that Dell EMC channel partners/employees echoed comfort in selling Nutanix-based XC products. That said, the firm thinks Dell EMC has set guidelines where VxRail and XC are positioned with customers.
"Customer feedback was positive on Dell EMC solutions, but suggested Nutanix's NX had power/space/deployment advantages," the firm added.
Supporting its investment thesis, Oppenheimer said Nutanix would benefit long term from:
<ul>
<li>The disruptive nature of its differentiated hyperconverged technology.</li>
<li>Large addressable data center equipment market.</li>
<li>Effective land-and-expand business model, having potential to grow in terms of customer base, international sales and recurring revenue.</li>
</ul>
As such, Oppenheimer reiterated its Outperform rating and $34 price target on the shares of the company.

Key Takeaways From The Nutanix NEXT Conference

It all started with T-Mobile US' (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tmus#NYSE">TMUS</a>) JUMP plan which allowed consumers to upgrade their smartphones sooner than the industry standard of every two years.

	It didn’t take long before AT&amp;T (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/t#NYSE">T</a>) fell in line with its Next program, followed by Verizon Communication (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vz#NYSE">VZ</a>) and Vodafone (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/vod#NASDAQ">VOD</a>) owned-Verizon Wireless, which showed up with a program called Edge.

	So, now there are three carriers offering three plans that allow you to upgrade as soon as every six months to a year after you get a new phone.

	The question is: Should you?

	The <a href="http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_23696037/verizon-at-amp-t-and-t-mobiles-new">Denver Post</a> took a look at all three programs and concluded that it depends. Noting that manufacturers like Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Samsung (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ssnlf#OTC">SSNLF</a>) come out with new models at least once a year, clearly the new plans are aimed at consumers who want the latest phone at the first possible moment.

	As the Denver Post also pointed out, however, even with the new plans, having the latest and greatest comes at a price – often considerably more than you would pay by keeping a phone for the more customary two years.

	AT&amp;T Next

	With AT&amp;T’s Next program, you have to pay at least 60 percent of your existing phone’s full retail price before you can switch. Payments are spread over 20 months with trade-ins available after 12 payments.

	Using a Samsung Galaxy S4 for illustration, after 12 payments of $32 on the Next plan, you will have shelled out $384. By going the traditional subsidized route, AT&amp;T requires $200 upfront with no payments. Early termination (at 12 months) will cost you $205. Total out of pocket by then will have been $405, but you own the phone, which you can sell to more than make up the $21 difference and quite likely cover part or all of the costs of your next subsidized phone.

	Verizon Edge

	The Verizon plan allows you to upgrade after six months – as opposed to a year under the other plans – but as the Denver Post points out, why would anyone want to pay $325 (50 percent of Verizon’s $650 cost of a new Samsung S4) for a phone you only have for six months?

	<a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/business/verizon-adds-phone-upgrade-plan-compete-att-t-mobile-6C10676899">NBC News</a> noted that Verizon spread the payments over 24 months instead of AT&amp;T’s 20, requiring only that you pay 50 percent of the cost before upgrading. After 12 monthly payments of a little more than $27, you will have paid the $325 and can then trade in your (now) old Samsung S4 for a new model and start all over again.

	T-Mobile JUMP

	T-Mobile is unlike both Verizon and AT&amp;T because it did away with contracts and subsidized phones so that option isn’t available. T-Mobile contracts tend to be less expensive than either AT&amp;T or Verizon, although AT&amp;T touts the fact that its LTE service is the fastest available and Verizon points out that it is considered the most reliable network everywhere.

	T-Mobile requires an upfront payment and a monthly fee for the smartphone as well as a $10 “program charge” (which also includes insurance that normally runs $8 a month).

	At the end of a year under T-Mobile you would have $510 for your Samsung S4. While this all seems to make T-Mobile the “odd man out” price-wise, the Denver Post points to T-Mobile’s exceptionally low wireless service plan prices – much lower than those of AT&amp;T or Verizon.

	Adding it All Up

	If you are generally happy with your cellphone and don’t feel the need (or desire) to upgrade frequently, the new frequent upgrade plans are probably not for you. All of them will end up costing you more if you don’t upgrade at least once a year and you could end up literally paying twice for your phone if you keep it long enough.

	According to <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/columnist/2013/07/21/att-verizon-edge-smartphone-upgrade/2553829/">USA Today</a>, if you did upgrade once a year and go with AT&amp;T, you would pay almost twice what you would pay for a phone on a subsidized plan.

	With Verizon, you would only have to pay half the retail cost (versus AT&amp;T’s 60 percent), but still more than what you would pay during the same period for a subsidized phone.

	T-Mobile, USA Today, notes has the extra charges, but they are mitigated by cheaper wireless plans, making T-Mobile your best bet, cost-wise.

	This, of course, doesn’t take into account AT&amp;T’s faster service or Verizon’s reputation for reliability.

Is a Frequent Upgrade Cellular Plan for You?

One year ago today, the world said goodbye to one of the most prominent men in technology -- Steve Jobs.

As the co-founder of Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Jobs became one of the most revered men in the industry. He was also known for building Pixar Animation Studios, a spin off of Lucasfilm he purchased from George Lucas and turned into an empire that produced blockbusters and Academy Award-winning films; and NeXT, a computer company that manufactured and developed workstations that he founded in 1985 after losing a power struggle with Apple's board of directors. He was also known as the man that brought us the iPod, iPhone and iPad -- not because he engineered them himself, but because he had become the face of Apple products.

Without ever having met him, it was impossible to not feel <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/tech/11/10/1968584/farewell-jobs">saddened by his passing</a> last year.

"Twenty years from now, Apple may still be known for making great products," Benzinga wrote on October 5, 2011. "Tim Cook may go on to become the best successor Apple could have hoped for. But when people think of the iPhone and its inevitable successors, they will still think of Jobs."

Today Apple is remembering the man that helped build the company with a commemorative <a href="http://www.apple.com/">video</a> on Apple.com. During the video, which is comprised of images and audio bites, viewers can hear Jobs speak about one of his favorite quotes.

"There's an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love," said Jobs. "'I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been,' and we've always tried to do that at Apple."

One of the more memorable, comical moments came during an iPhone event in which Jobs called a coffee shop and ordered 4,000 lattes to go. "Just kidding," he added. "Wrong number. Thank you!"

"It's in Apple's DNA that technology alone is not enough," Job said in another audio clip. "It's technology married with liberal arts, married with humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing."

After the video, Apple.com jumps to a message from CEO Tim Cook.

"Steve's passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us," said Cook. "I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.

"One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.

"I'm incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It's a wonderful tribute to Steve's memory and everything he stood for."
