New York Times

New York Times Co is an American media company known for publishing its flagship newspaper, The New York Times. The company also operates the International New York Times newspaper, as well as digital properties such as NYTimes and various smartphone applications. The company has two segments: New York Times Group and The Athletic. The company generates the majority of its revenue from the NYTG segment. The NYTG and The Athletic segments derive revenue from subscriptions, Advertising, and others, where the majority source of revenue for both segments is subscription.

While many billionaires start their morning routine with coffee and watching the news or reading the news online, Bill Gates revealed in 2022 that part of his daily routine included <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/01/25224359/what-is-wordle-how-to-play-the-hottest-new-free-puzzle-game-everyone-is-talking-about">playing word game Wordle.</a>
Here's a look back at Gates's addiction to World and other guessing games and how it could help you if you're still playing.
What Happened:&nbsp;The&nbsp;Microsoft Corporation&nbsp;co-founder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/About-Bill-Gates/Wordle" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shared&nbsp;</a>in August 2022 that he "can't stop playing Wordle" in a blog post.
"I've started every day since February or March doing the same thing. Not long after I wake up, I grab my phone or laptop and solve Wordle, the puzzle where you get six chances to guess a five-letter English word," Gates said.
Gates also plays&nbsp;Quordle, a four-word puzzle game, and&nbsp;Octordle, an eight-word puzzle game, which are both similar to the play style of Wordle.
Along with playing the games, Gates admitted&nbsp;he's competitive and checked&nbsp;daily to see how he stacked up with friends and family at the number of turns or guesses it took to solve each puzzle game.
Gates said unlike some other "time stinks," puzzle games such as&nbsp;Wordle are a great way to connect with people.
Wordle was<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/01/25224359/what-is-wordle-how-to-play-the-hottest-new-free-puzzle-game-everyone-is-talking-about" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;launched in 2021</a>&nbsp;by Josh Wardle and went viral in late 2021 with strong mentions and shares on social media with many celebrities playing the game and sharing it with their followers. The puzzle game company was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/22/01/25327396/addictive-word-game-wordle-bought-over-by-nyt-for-low-seven-figures-what-you-need-to-know" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sold&nbsp;</a>to the&nbsp;New York Times Co&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NYT#NYSE">NYT</a>)&nbsp;in January 2022 in a low seven-figure deal, according to reports.
Gates said he might have an advantage with Wordle from reading a lot of English literature.
"Every once in a while, there'll be a word where you're like I've never used that word," he said.
Gates said he knew the word Smite because he read the Bible and&nbsp;Duchy because of reading English literature.
Gates also said there's a website that offers Wordle in 64 languages including some made up from Star Trek and Lord of the Rings.
"I consider myself a nerd, but anyone who can solve a Wordle in Klingon or Elvish is on a whole other level," he said.
Gates noted&nbsp;he usually solved&nbsp;the Wordle within four guesses or sometimes five. For Octordle, Gates once solved the eight words in 10 guesses on practice mode but admits he's never done that well in the normal puzzles.
Along with word puzzle games, Gates also plays&nbsp;Nerdle, an equation guessing game that uses digits 1 through 9 and operators (+, -, x and /). Like Worlde, you get six guesses and tiles show if they are correct,&nbsp;or correct but in a different location.
"As a math-oriented person, I'm probably better at Nerdle than the word-related versions, though I don't have as many friends and family members who like to do it."
Gates said he usually gets Nerdle in three or four guesses.
"It's a lot of fun."
"I like to start with a word that contains lots of vowels, like Audio or Ounce. Adieu&nbsp;is a good one too," Gates said.
Gates added it&#8217;s important to learn patterns and know which consonants can pair well next to each other.
"I like to look for C and H, for example, or S and L. Then the consonants that are almost never paired with others —&nbsp;like Q, V, X, and Z —&nbsp;really jump out."
"There's a lot of strategy in it. You always want to be gaining as much new information."
While some words can start with vowels, Gates liked&nbsp;to use vowels in the second and fourth positions when he has two vowels.
Words that have no vowels can be tricky, like Tryst, a word that Gates said he only got until he realized it had to have a Y.
One of the cardinal rules of Wordle according to Gates is&nbsp;that "letters can be used more than once." Gates lost on the word Tasty after having the final four letters correct but guessed Pasty&nbsp;instead of Tasty on his final guess.
The hardest part of the game is when you have four of the five letters but there are multiple potential answers, Gates added. Gates cited &#8220;ight&#8221; as an example with potential answers being Light,&nbsp;Tight, Fight, Sight&nbsp;and Right. Gates said&nbsp;a bit of luck is needed to get the guess right before running out of turns.
Gates liked&nbsp;the practice modes that allow multiple puzzles and the chance to waste time.
"I'm the kind of person who will play an addictive game over and over if I give myself the chance," he noted.

The new generative AI offerings of Adobe Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADBE#NASDAQ">ADBE</a>) are finding a lot of takers among enterprise customers, who prioritize intellectual property safety.
What Happened: During the company&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45915038/adobe-q2-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-raised-fy-guidance-continued-investments-in-ai-innovation">second quarter results</a> on Thursday, Adobe&#8217;s President of Digital Media, David Wadhwani, highlighted that customers are choosing Firefly not just for its creative capabilities, but because of the legal safeguards built into the product.
&#8220;We have trained our Firefly models, as many of you know, on stock and other content that we have access to,&#8221; he said, adding that the company has a &#8220;contributor fund&#8221; that pays out to creators of stock and other content used in its models, thus sidestepping the IP risks that other generative AI models face.
According to Wadhwani, the strategy is resonating well in boardrooms, with a lot of companies selecting Adobe&#8217;s Firefly generative AI solution because of the &#8220;safety of it.&#8221;

While the company didn&#8217;t explicitly link any new customer wins to this strategy, it did highlight a string of high-profile enterprise adoptions tied to its Firefly and GenStudio platforms during the quarter.
&#8220;Select key global customer wins include Cisco, County of Los Angeles, the Defense Information Systems Agency, Macy's [and] Ulta Beauty," the company said, also noting that &#8220;top sports leagues like MLB, the NFL, and Premier League&#8221; had joined its growing roster of clients.
Emphasizing the need for IP-safe tools in enterprise content creation, the company&#8217;s CEO, Shantanu Narayen, said, &#8220;You're not going to use something that's not been designed to be intellectually… yeah, the intellectual property being correct. For production.&#8221;
Why It Matters: This comes amid growing concerns of copyright infringement by generative AI tools such as Midjourney and OpenAI. 
Early this week, the Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) and Comcast Corp.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) Universal Studios <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/25/06/45895643/disney-universal-studios-sue-ai-image-generator-midjourney-for-copyright-infringement">filed a lawsuit</a> against MidJourney, calling the platform a &#8220;bottomless pit of plagiarism.&#8221;

During its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45915038/adobe-q2-earnings-revenue-beat-eps-beat-raised-fy-guidance-continued-investments-in-ai-innovation">second quarter results</a> on Thursday, Adobe reported $5.87 billion in revenue, ahead of consensus estimates at $5.79 billion. Profits stood at $5.06 per share, beating estimates of $4.96 per share.
Price Action: Adobe&#8217;s shares were up 0.20% on Thursday, ending the day at $413.68, but are down 2.10% after hours, following its second quarter earnings.

The company reported first-quarter adjusted earnings of 41 cents per share, beating estimates of 34 cents per share.

Total digital-only subscribers were up 1.15 million from the prior year&#8217;s quarter. Average revenue per user (ARPU) was $9.54 in the first quarter, up 3.6% year-over-year. 
The company ended the quarter with $902.3 million in cash and marketable securities. 
&#8220;As our first quarter results show, we&#8217;ve had a strong start to the year. Our strategy is working and our business is growing and demonstrating resilience amidst the current economic and geopolitical uncertainty,&#8221; said Meredith Kopit Levien, president and CEO of New York Times.

New York Times repurchased approximately $58.9 million of its common stock in the quarter. The company had $443 million remaining under its buyback as of May 2.
Guidance: New York Times expects second-quarter digital-only subscription revenue to grow between 13% and 16% year-over-year. The company expects total subscription revenue growth of 8% to 10% in the second quarter. 
Digital advertising revenue is expected to increase in the high-single-digits, while total advertising revenue is expected to be flat to up in the low-single-digits. The company also guided for affiliate, licensing and other revenue growth in the mid-single-digits in the second quarter.

Wall Street rose on Wednesday, with all major equity indices advancing as investors assessed the latest batch of corporate earnings and drew optimism from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43494246/private-employment-rises-by-183000-beats-estimates-in-january-consumer-facing-industries-drove-hiring">positive labor market data.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 gained 0.3% to 6,045 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6%, now trading less than 1% below its all-time high.
Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) missed quarterly earnings expectations on its cloud business, triggering a 7% drop, its worst single-day decline in a year. On the upside, Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) surged 6% after beating estimates, fueling a rally in chip stocks. Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) also gained 3.4%.
The Russell 2000 outperformed with a 0.9% gain, reflecting strength in smaller-cap stocks.
Fresh labor market data signaled resilience. Private sector employment rose by 183,000 in January according to the ADP report, surpassing expectations of 150,000. The services sector continued expanding,<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/02/43499292/us-services-growth-slows-in-january-as-tariff-concerns-mount"> as per ISM survey</a>, though at a slightly slower-than-anticipated pace.
Investors piled into Treasuries, sending yields tumbling across the curve. The 30-year yield fell to its lowest level since Dec. 18, 2024, while the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rallied 1.9%.
Gold extended its bull run, surging over 1% to a record $2,870 per ounce, driven by continued central bank buying. Copper jumped 2%. 
In crypto markets, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) edged down 1.2% to $97,000.

<li>Digital-only ARPU rose 4.4% to $9.65 due to price increases and subscriber transitions.</li>
<li>Digital subscription revenues grew 16.0%, while digital advertising revenues increased 9.5%.</li>
<li>Total subscription revenues increased 8.4% to $466.6 million in the fourth quarter. </li>
<li>Advertising revenues increased 0.6% to $165.1 million</li>
<li>Digital advertising revenues increased 9.5%</li>
<li>Print advertising revenues decreased 16.4%.</li>
<li>Adjusted operating profit margin was 23.5%, a year-over-year increase of approximately 70 basis points.</li>

The New York Times approved a $350 million share repurchase program and declared a 5 cent increase in its dividend to 18 cents per share. The dividend is payable on April 17.
New York Times CEO Meredith Kopit Levien said, &#8220;Deep engagement fueled our multi-revenue stream model, and enhanced our durability even in a dynamic information ecosystem.&#8221;
In its<a href="https://event.choruscall.com/mediaframe/webcast.html?webcastid=LE3YM0cp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> conference call</a>, Levien announced the company will have a pipeline of new content, shows, features, games, and enhancements this year. There is also strong demand for the company&#8217;s lifestyle products, she added. 
When it comes to sports, The Athletic&#8217;s revenues grew 29% in the fourth quarter of 2024 to $49.7 million from $38.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Price Action: New York Times shares are trading lower by 11.3% to $49.55 at last check Wednesday.

"Inside Out 2" and "Deadpool &amp; Wolverine" are the <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/2024/?ref_=bo_yl_table_1">highest </a>grossing movies domestically and worldwide for 2024, making their appearance on the list no huge surprise.
"Saltburn" ranked third, which might be thanks to some viral scenes in the movie from Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), released in theaters and streamed on Prime Video.
Warner Bros. Discovery (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WBD#NASDAQ">WBD</a>) had several films on the list with "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" and "Dune: Part Two," which rank sixth and seventh for domestic box office revenue for the year.
Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>) also has several films on the list with "Oppenheimer" and "Kung Fu Panda 4."
On the television front, Google&#8217;s top searches focused on streaming shows. Here are the 10 most-searched TV shows worldwide in 2024:

With six of the 10 most Googled series globally for the year, Netflix continues to show its dominance in the streaming sector.
Amazon's Prime Video had two series on the list: "Fallout" and "Marry My Husband." Disney, with its FX arm and Hulu streaming platform, had "Shogun." Warner Bros. Discovery had one series on the list: "House of the Dragon," which airs on HBO and streams on Max.

One notable entry on the list is Connections, which tops the games list. The popular word game puzzle from The New York Times (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NYT#NYSE">NYT</a>) is the company's second most popular game, trailing Wordle, which formerly dominated Google searches.

'Inside Out 2,' 'Deadpool & Wolverine,' 'Baby Reindeer' Google's Top 2024 Entertainment Searches

Joe Rogan's podcast is among the most listened to in the world but for Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) users, the podcaster ranked third in 2024, despite having one of the most listened to episodes with his Donald Trump interview <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41561452/trump-to-joe-rogan-biggest-mistake-was-trusting-bad-and-disloyal-people">before the 2024 election.</a>
What Happened: Rogan <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/02/36914209/spotify-inks-multiyear-deal-with-podcast-king-joe-rogan-amid-shifting-strategy">renewed a multi-year deal</a> with Spotify Technology (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPOT#NYSE">SPOT</a>) earlier this year, which comes after four years of exclusivity with the music company and huge listener figures put up year after year.
Unlike past agreements with Spotify, Rogan's podcast "The Joe Rogan Experience" is no longer exclusive to Spotify and Rogan is free to share episodes on other platforms like Apple, Amazon and YouTube, the video platform owned by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>).
Some listeners love the video aspect that shows Rogan and the interviewee, so videos and clips on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@joerogan">YouTube </a>have often generated millions of views.
Rogan's interview with Trump before the 2024 election has 51 million views on YouTube, compared to Rogan's 18.6 million YouTube subscriber figure. Interviews with J.D. Vance and Elon Musk before the 2024 election each have 18 million viewers.
While Rogan will likely rank as the top listened-to podcast on Spotify, the same can't be said for Apple podcasts. Apple recently <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/11/apple-shares-the-most-popular-podcasts-of-2024/">shared </a>its list of top podcast rankings for 2024.

The show, hosted by Michael Barbaro and Sabrina Tavernise, lasts around 20 minutes a day, five days a week.
"Crime Junkie," a weekly true crime podcast, also surpassed Rogan on Apple's year-end rankings.
"The Tucker Carlson Show" ranked first as the top new show on Apple podcasts.
Rogan's interview with Trump, titled #2219, ranked as the second top episode for Apple, trailing the Crime Junkie episode "SERIAL KILLER: The Alphabet Murders Part 1." The episode was also the fifth most shared Apple podcast for the year.
Tucker Carlson held the title for the most shared podcast episode with &#8220;Calley &amp; Casey Means: The Truth About Ozempic, the Pill, and How Big Pharma Keeps You Sick.&#8221;
A "Call Her Daddy" podcast episode with presidential candidate Kamala Harris was the year&#8217;s ninth most shared Apple podcast episode.

While &#8216;The Daily&#8217; releases five episodes a week, Rogan typically puts out four. However, Rogan's interviews are significantly longer, often lasting several hours, compared to the shorter format of &#8216;The Daily.&#8217;

Joe Rogan's Trump Podcast Episode Couldn't Land Him Top Spot On Apple

ValueAct Holdings, L.P. reported holdings worth $3.9 billion in the September quarter after it disclosed major changes in its 13F filing for the third quarter of current fiscal. 
What Happened: One of the major changes in its holdings during Q3 was the addition of 211,500 shares of Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) for $121.07 million, representing 3.08% of its total portfolio.
ValueAct Holdings is a hedge fund popularly known for its activist strategies, run by chief executive officer, Mason Morfit. An activist hedge fund usually follows an event-driven strategy and acquires sufficient equity to influence a company's policies, to increase company value. ValueAct has a long history of investing in technology companies and is generally considered to be more constructivist and collaborative than other activist funds.
A ValueAct spokesperson confirmed to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga</a> that the firm has built a $1 billion stake in Meta.
In 2022, Brad Gerstner&#8216;s Altimeter Capital targeted Meta, urging the company to reduce its workforce. Gerstner articulated his concerns in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/10/29380959/meta-investor-proposes-curb-on-employees-strength-metaverse-spending">a letter titled &#8220;Time to Get Fit.</a>
ValueAct fund's specific intentions remain unclear, but CEO Morfit is reportedly supportive of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s strategic focus on advancing artificial intelligence initiatives, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/12/activist-valueact-has-1-billion-stake-in-meta-sources-say.html">according</a> to CNBC.

It is one of the largest companies to be targeted by an activist investor, with a market cap of nearly $1.5 trillion. The hedge fund also increased its investment in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/24/01/36471982/disney-partners-with-valueact-capital-for-strategic-counsel-in-anticipation-of-2024-shareholder-meet">The Walt Disney Co</a> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) by adding 1.33 million shares taking its total value to $718.04 million in ValueAct&#8217;s portfolio.

Other Key Changes To The Portfolio
Apart from adding Meta, ValueAct has made some major changes to its portfolio which consists of ten holdings. The fund has increased its stake in the American video game developer Roblox Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RBLX#NYSE">RBLX</a>) by adding 7.83 million shares in Q3. It now represents 8.81% of ValueAct&#8217;s portfolio, having a total value of $448.62 million.
Live Nation Entertainment Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYV#NYSE">LYV</a>), Visa Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>) and Liberty Media Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLYVK#NASDAQ">LLYVK</a>) are other new holdings that ValueAct has added to its portfolio.
The hedge fund also reduced 806.96 thousand shares in Expedia Group Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EXPE#NASDAQ">EXPE</a>) and completely exited Spotify Technology SA (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPOT#NYSE">SPOT</a>), Finserv Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FI#NYSE">FI</a>), KKR &amp; Co Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KKR#NYSE">KKR</a>), New York Times Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NYT#NYSE">NYT</a>) and Flutter Entertainment PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FLUT#NYSE">FLUT</a>).
