Consumer packaged goods company Post Holdings Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/POST#NYSE">POST</a>) will <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/n44707584/post-holdings-announces-plan-to-close-cobourg-ontario-and-sparks-nevada-facilities" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shut down two</a> of its cereal production plants in an effort to cut costs and optimize operations, the company announced Wednesday. The company has some iconic brands like Raisin Bran, Weetabix and Honeycomb.
The impacted facilities, located in Cobourg, Ontario, and Sparks, Nevada, employ roughly 300 people combined and are expected to cease operations by the end of December 2025.
The decision stems from excess capacity in the company's cereal production network as consumer interest in ready-to-eat cereals continues to wane.

Nicolas Catoggio, president and CEO, said, "The ready-to-eat cereal category continues to decline. To respond to this, we are reducing excess manufacturing capacity and optimizing our North American plant network to better utilize our production capacity."
Post acquired the Cobourg facility as part of its 2017 purchase of Weetabix, while the Sparks plant was added to its assets following the 2021 acquisition of Treehouse Foods' cereal business.
Production from both locations will be reallocated to other established sites within the Post Consumer Brands manufacturing network.
Post expects to incur pre-tax expenses between $63.5 million and $67.5 million, including both cash and non-cash costs, as a result of shutting down the facilities and moving production.
Post also plans to invest an additional $5 million to $7 million in capital expenditures on top of its earlier fiscal 2025 capex forecast of $380 million to $420 million to facilitate the transition process.
The company reported a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/n43547112/post-holdings-reports-results-for-the-first-quarter-of-fiscal-year-2025-raises-fiscal-year-2025-ou" rel="noreferrer noopener">0.4% increase in first-quarter revenue </a>to $1.974 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.73. Post also raised FY25 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $1.42 billion—$1.46 billion.
Post forecasts that the consolidation will lead to cost savings between $21 million and $23 million annually beginning in fiscal 2026, once the new setup becomes fully operational.
Price Action: POST shares traded higher by 3.55% at $115.88 at the last check on Wednesday.

The first warning sign came from the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, which revealed an "unusually large" spike in inflation expectations. The one-year inflation outlook surged by a full percentage point to 4.3%, marking its highest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43564020/consumer-sentiment-sinks-economist-flags-unusually-large-rise-in-inflation-perception">level since November 2023. </a>
Investor uncertainty grew following President Donald Trump's announcement that &#8216;reciprocal tariffs&#8217; would take effect next week. Trump is expected to sign new executive orders at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
On the macro front, February&#8217;s jobs report revealed a mixed outcome, with employment growth slowing down more than expected, yet unemployment fell more than expected, and wages surged more than expected.
Market reaction was swift. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.6%, erasing its weekly gains, while the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.9% by 1:00 p.m. trading in New York. 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped into negative territory for the week, putting its three-week winning streak at risk. Small-cap stocks underperformed, with the Russell 2000 sinking 1.3%. 
Stock-wise, Uber Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NASDAQ">UBER</a>) skyrocketed by 9.5%, extending its 8.6% rally from the previous session, after hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman revealed a stake of 30.3 million shares in the ride-hailing giant.
In currency and bond markets, the U.S. dollar index – tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – rallied following the tariff headlines, while Treasury yields climbed higher. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 0.8%, reflecting renewed pressure on long-duration bonds. 
Gold took a breather, retreating under pressure from a stronger dollar. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) erased early session gains, slipping from an intraday high of $100,000 to $97,500.

Gold softened, dropping 0.6% from record highs and snapping a five-session winning streak.

Investors grappled with growing uncertainties surrounding the economic impacts of Donald Trump's policies and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">Federal Reserve&#8217;s next moves.</a>
Fed Chair Jerome Powell's remarks from the previous day weighed heavily on risk assets. Powell signaled no need to lower rates, citing the economy's resilience and emphasizing the importance of fully finishing the inflation jobs. 
Boston Fed President Susan Collins added to the uncertainty on Friday, stating she needs to see additional data before deciding on further rate cuts at the Federal Reserve&#8217;s upcoming policy meeting.
Expectations for a 25-basis-point rate cut in December were significantly scaled back, with odds falling to 59%, down from 82% just a day earlier.
U.S. indices are poised to end the week in negative territory, as optimism fueled by Trump's win fizzled. Tech stocks were hit hardest, with the Nasdaq 100 plunging 2.5%, wiping out its post-election gains. 
Chipmakers tumbled across the board, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) reaching a 2-month low, as Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMAT#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>) released a disappointing outlook.
The surge in rate-cut uncertainty and broader economic concerns pushed the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) up by more than 17%, reflecting heightened market fear.
Treasury yields edged lower, indicating a flight to safe-haven bonds. The drop in yields supported the Japanese yen, which ended a four-day losing streak.
The U.S. dollar eased but remains on track for its seventh consecutive week of gains, marking its longest winning streak since September 2023.
Gold prices remained flat despite falling yields and a softer dollar, failing to act as a hedge in a turbulent session. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) defied the risk-off sentiment, rising 2.5% to $89,600 in a surprising show of strength.
