Analyst Notes: In a note shared with Benzinga, analysts at cryptocurrency payment company B2BINPAY said, "Tariff policy that recently came into action significantly impacted global markets, and this is the reason why Bitcoin has fallen below the $81,500–82,000 level, which was crucial for maintaining its past momentum."
That said, assertions such as the one by JPMorgan analysts that Bitcoin's "digital gold" narrative <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/04/44627407/gold-overtaking-bitcoin-in-inflation-hedge-strategy-jpmorgan-says">was in danger</a> haven't positively influenced gold's price, B2BINPAY said, as even the yellow metal has retreated from its highs.
Popular on-chain analytics firm Santiment drew attention to the "opportunity zones" for altcoins.
"As tariffs have wreaked havoc on the crypto sector, the MVRV Divergence model shows that assets have racked up heavy enough realized losses to justify dip buys," Santiment stated. "If and when a global tariff solution is reached, it would undoubtedly trigger a very rapid cryptocurrency recovery."

And then there&#8217;s plain logic. &#8220;If you needed to pay rent what are you selling first? Apple stock or your crypto bags?&#8221; one user wrote.
Another replied, &#8220;Boom. When you realize big money has already hijacked bitcoin and it's no different than the stock market anymore.&#8221;
Others got sarcastic: &#8220;Day 1 of the bear market: Portnoy discovers what correlation means.&#8221; And: &#8220;It used to be a currency before it was hijacked and turned into a collectible.&#8221; Prominent analyst Benjamin Cowen also piled on, saying, &#8220;How can you be your age and write something like that?&#8221;
Some users defended Bitcoin&#8217;s original intent. &#8220;Traders are the froth. Hodlers are the floor,&#8221; one said. Another added, &#8220;Bitcoin is the best-performing asset over the last 15 years.&#8221;

This latest Bitcoin drop didn&#8217;t come out of nowhere. Wall Street was already reeling from inflation data and weak consumer sentiment. On Friday, a few days before &#8220;Liberation Day,&#8221; The Dow Jones Industrial Average <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/04/44626208/crypto-market-update-as-wall-street-sells-off-is-bitcoin-showing-strength-for-the-weeks-ahead">fell over 700 points</a>, the S&amp;P 500 slid 2%, and the Nasdaq (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NDAQ#NASDAQ">NDAQ</a>) lost nearly 3%.
Then came Trump's tariff announcement, renewing trade war fears. The Atlanta Fed&#8217;s GDPNow <a href="https://www.atlantafed.org/cqer/research/gdpnow">forecast</a> now shows a 2.8% GDP decline for Q1, up from -3.7% on April 1.
While Bitcoin has shown some resilience compared to stocks, it's still moving in the same direction when fear hits.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Could Bitcoin Break Away?</h2>
Some still believe in one of Bitcoin's original promises: a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/04/44628685/bitcoin-is-a-realistic-global-reserve-asset-experts-say">decentralized hedge against economic chaos</a>. But for now, most agree that Bitcoin is still a risk-on asset, and it trades like one.&nbsp;
As Portnoy pointed out, it looks more and more like <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/04/44631522/bitcoin-as-trump-tariff-safe-haven-not-yet-but-might-decouple-over-time-expert-says">just another part of the system</a> it was meant to replace—&#8221;Market up, bitcoin up. Market down, bitcoin down.&#8221; Or, as Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki, <a href="https://x.com/GerberKawasaki/status/1907928295104196974">said</a>, &#8220;BTC price movements are related to sentiment. Risk on, up. Risk off, down.&#8221;

The analysts said consumer staples have historically outperformed the S&amp;P 500 in most recent recessions, suggesting a defensive edge.
However, the analysts warned that current conditions, such as lingering high prices and weak volume growth, may limit their resilience in a future downturn.

During recessions, the Consumer Staples sector stock prices are primarily influenced by earnings per share (EPS) rather than sales growth.
Analysis shows that forward EPS estimates account for over 90% of stock price movement across key subsectors like Beverages, Household &amp; Personal Care (HPC), Packaged Food, and Tobacco, with the correlation being the tightest Beverages and HPC.
The analysts noted that this highlights the critical importance of earnings strength when evaluating stock performance in uncertain economic conditions.
A review of six past recessions reveals that certain Consumer Staples stocks consistently outperformed the S&amp;P 500.
Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), Colgate-Palmolive Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CL#NYSE">CL</a>), General Mills Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GIS#NYSE">GIS</a>), McCormick &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MKC#NYSE">MKC</a>), PepsiCo Inc. In the last four recessions with the most comprehensive data, McCormick, General Mills, and Church &amp; Dwight Co. Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CHD#NYSE">CHD</a>) delivered the strongest relative performance.
Top-performing Consumer Staples stocks in a potential downturn will likely share three traits: profit flexibility to offset revenue pressure and rising costs, strong U.S. manufacturing presence to limit tariff-related inflation, and solid balance sheets capable of sustaining share buybacks to boost earnings per share.
Analysts see McCormick, Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>) and Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PM#NYSE">PM</a>) as well-defended, with Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KDP#NASDAQ">KDP</a>), Molson Coors Beverage Co.
