On Tuesday, in a post on X, investor and economist Peter Schiff highlighted U.S. 10-Year Treasury yields climbing back to 4.5%, despite the &#8220;trade truce&#8221; with China early this week, while the U.S. dollar &#8220;resumes its broad-based decline.&#8221;
What Happened: &#8220;Despite the trade truce, the world is losing confidence in the dollar and our ability to get our fiscal house in order,&#8221; Schiff said, highlighting structural issues, rather than short-term diplomacy, as driving factors behind recent market behaviors.
Schiff says, &#8220;The consequences of de-dollarization will be profound,&#8221; referring to a potential pivot by foreign central banks and investors away from U.S. debt and currency reserves in recent weeks, leading to high borrowing costs for the U.S. Government.

10-Year U.S. Treasury Yield hit its highest level in a month at 4.45% on Tuesday, up from 4.17% at the beginning of this month, and 3.99% at the beginning of April. This comes as markets continue to assess the impact of the trade de-escalation with China this week, according to TradingEconomics.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is flat during the day, trading at 100.95, up 0.001%, while being up 0.72% for the month. The currency witnessed a pullback following a sharp rally on Monday, mainly owing to the soft inflation data, which hints at a rate cut by the Federal Reserve, according to Reuters.

Analysts at Deutsche AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DB#NYSE">DB</a>) early last month referred to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44756751/full-spectrum-collapse-top-bank-rings-alarm-over-simultaneous-fall-of-us-assets">simultaneous collapse</a> of U.S. equities, the dollar, and Treasury yields as &#8220;uncharted territory,&#8221; which they blamed squarely on markets having &#8220;lost faith in U.S. assets.&#8221;
This comes as the U.S. Treasury Department <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45204657/us-treasury-ramps-up-borrowing-needs-to-514-billion-marking-a-surprising-320-jump-from-its-previous-forecast">ramps up its borrowing</a>, projecting $514 billion in net marketable debt being issued during the current quarter, which is a staggering 317% over its own forecasts two months earlier, at $123 billion.

Economist Peter Schiff is challenging conventional wisdom that China needs the United States more than vice versa, questioning just how essential U.S. consumer demand really is for China&#8217;s manufacturing engine, amid a surge in the global middle-class consumer base.
What Happened: On Sunday, Schiff, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's tariff policies, pushed back against a growing pro-tariff narrative that claims China has no alternative buyers for its manufactured goods besides American consumers, in a post on X.
&#8220;It's said there's no way China can find buyers for its manufactured goods without U.S. consumers,&#8221; Schiff said. &#8220;But we're only 4% of the world's population.&#8221;

Schiff contends that the true constraint on global consumption is the artificially inflated U.S. dollar. He argues that if the dollar were to depreciate by 50% against a basket of global currencies, &#8220;the savings and incomes of the other 96% would double,&#8221; boosting the purchasing power of China's &#8220;other customers.&#8221;

He explains this further by stating that demand in the U.S. is a function of the Dollar&#8217;s exchange rate. &#8220;If the dollar falls relative to other currencies, the purchasing power of Americans is transferred abroad,&#8221; Schiff says. In other words, as the dollar weakens, consumers in other countries gain greater purchasing power.

Recently, Tesla Inc. This was in response to an article on X by hedge fund manager Ray Dalio, regarding how &#8220;the United States&#8217; role as the world&#8217;s biggest consumer of manufactured goods and greatest producer of debt assets to finance its over-consumption is unsustainable.&#8221;

Peter Schiff Challenges US Dominance After Elon Musk's China Consumption Narrative — A 50% Drop In The Dollar Could Supercharge China's Global Consumer Base

Traders and macro experts are taking note of the Japanese Finance Minister, Katsunobu Katō&#8216;s subtle reference to his country&#8217;s substantial U.S. Treasury holdings as a possible leverage in the ongoing tariff negotiations with Washington.
What Happened: On Friday, Eliant Capital, a popular macro and event-driven trader, posted on X, drawing attention to the latest remarks from Katō, amid trade negotiations with the U.S.
Speaking in a television interview on Friday, Katō said that the purpose of Japan&#8217;s U.S. Treasury holdings, which is currently the largest in the world, at over $1.13 trillion, is to ensure that there is sufficient liquidity for defending the Yen via interventions, when necessary, according to a report by Reuters.

While there were no outright threats, Kato made a slight reference to the use of treasuries as leverage, saying that &#8220;we need to put all cards on the table in negotiations. It could be among such cards,&#8221; when asked if Japan would be reassuring Washington that it would not be selling its Treasuries.
&#8220;Whether we actually use that card, however, is a different question,&#8221; Kato added, a notable shift from remarks he made just weeks earlier, when he explicitly ruled out using U.S. Treasury holdings in trade negotiations.
In the post, Eliant calls this a dangerous statement, which shows that &#8220;the U.S. doesn&#8217;t hold the cards here,&#8221; before illustrating that if Japan does press its advantage, the negotiations could tilt in its favor.
